Honestly, I have to say that I'm a little surprised. With his actions over the first few days being so calculated, I assumed that he would stay on the move and not hole himself up like that. I assume that maybe the two women spotted him and he had to take them hostage.

There were two, they got out of the cabin when he ran out shooting at the cops. As he ran into the forest shooting they got out and the cops got them out of danger. He then went back into the cabin. They say they were held for days.
