Hypebeasts
« on: February 09, 2013, 08:40:58 AM »
Hypebeasts are bigger pests to society ever than hipsters ever were.  Every nice shoe is almost impossible to get unless you're willing to overpay massively on ebay.

There were a bunch of hot releases today and they all sold out in seconds.

I was trying to get this foamposites ($235):

and this Jordan Brand Year of the Snake Pack ($300)

Economy can't be that bad when you can't even just buy a pair of $235 Nike kicks whenever you feel like it.

So how did this crap get started?

I remember 10 years ago, I could just walk in a store and get whatever shoe I wanted.  No twitter RSVP bullshit, raffle tickets, waking up at 5am in the morning to get into the online queue, etc..

I was never a sneaker head but I remember most stores would have long ass cues for Jordans sneak other popular shoes. You couldn't just walk in and cop them

I know a couple of hypebeasts.  They don't have much money at all, they're broke.  They just use credit cards.

There was a pair of Miami Vice LeBron Nike shoes a while back and couldn't find them anywhere in my size (13.5 or 14) without paying out the ass.  I didn't need them that bad so forget it...

I have been exploring this phenomenon a bit further on the internet. When did this get to be a thing? Has it always been a thing? I was totally blindsided by this. Is it wrong of me to want to file this mentally into my burgeoning "90s retro" category?

Internet + Nike + bape + supreme etc. But mostly the internet. The SB dunk craze last decade really set it off to a new level. Now a lot of beasts have moved on to givenchy, raf simons, etc. I blame Kanye for that one.

But since limited street apparel & shoes have existed so have the beasts.

For example

I do, but I don't really wear hypebeast stuff. A lot of the dudes I see in Jordan's/dunks are suuuuuper paranoid about getting their shit scuffed or marked (I've seen fights break out over it), which to me is the opposite of luxury. Part of me wants to get some of these limited nikes and just beat the shit out of them to upset people lol.

Hypebeasts don't just pay $200 for Nikes though

The hottest releases typically go for double MSRP, truly rare ones go for 1-2 K

to be fair, Jordan retros really aren't meant for playing

The build quality of retros is much worse than the originals.  Lockdown, traction, cushioning, etc, are all significantly worse.  Nike/Jordan Brand really knows their crowd
