'Murica-Bore: What cell service do you have?
« on: February 09, 2013, 11:48:30 AM »
I'm curious to see what services 'Murica Bore uses, and also how well they like it.

I'm thinking about switching from Verizon.  I was going to switch to Straight Talk because it costs $45 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data.  Then, I found out that "unlimited" data is actually 2gb per month, and they throttle nearly everybody down after a couple of months to make the data service almost unusable.

Also, how much do you pay?

Verizon. I'm still on my parent's family plan. I lose my unlimited data with my next phone upgrade though, so I think I'll finally be leaving them after about a decade. I don't like any of the others though. :-\

Are you sure about that?

When it comes to iPhones if you go into the AT&T store, the assholes there will tell you that you can't keep your unlimited data when upgrading. But if you upgrade the phone yourself through Apple, you're able to keep it. That's what I did.

Virgin Mobile USA prepaid. It's Sprint's prepaid service. I have an iPhone 4s I bought outright and pay $30 a month for unlimited SMS and data and 300 minutes. The plan is normally $35/month but you get a $5 monthly discount for automatic withdrawal. I used to pay $95/month on AT&T so this plan rules. I have noticed my network isn't quite as good in my area and surprisingly one month I ran out of minutes, but considering the price I think it's a great value.

oh rry, i'm gonna have to do this

At&t family plan with mom/sister.  It's about $80 a month, no data.  I don't really use my phone much... not sure why I have to shake those two down for money each month, but it is what it is.

yup, just switched to sprint last year for the same reason - was on a family plan for 10 years, but they wouldnt give me unlimited data when i switched to a new phone because it was only offered to people who already had previously had it. dumbfucks.

AT&T

Still have my unlimited data. Unlimited LTE :pimp I barely ever turn the wifi on.

$240/mo. with my wife and daughter on my account. They both have a 4S and 2GB data plans and insurance. I get an 8% discount and work reimburses me $95 a month.

Sprint, though a family plan and my part is $40/mo including insurance.

My campus is on a mountain in a forest so nobody gets any coverage indoors but coverage seems decent in other places. I used to do 20GB a month of torrents before I went ahead and got home Internet but nowadays the most data intensive thing I do is streaming music and video which isn't a problem even though it's just 3G in my area (~1Mb/s).

If not for the fact that I got a top of the line phone for 1 cent, it would have actually been a better deal to go with the virgin or tmobile prepaid plans.

I just recently switched to att. I don't use enough data to really care about caps. I used to have mobile but their phone selection is fucking awful and their service is terrible. With my corporate discount att is actually cheaper than T-Mobile too. 88 bucks a month, 500 minutes w/ rollover and 3 gbs of data. My experiences with att customer service is also much better than my past interactions with T-Mobile

My only worry with Net10 is that it's going to throttle down my data like StraightTalk does to their customers.  They're both owned by TracFone.

That was my biggest concern as well, the store who sold it to me though (mutual friend) uses the same $50 bundle and swears that it doesn't, at least up until "5GB." So we'll see, if starts shitting up I'll switch without hesitation.

The only reason why I really wanted to go with a prepaid first and foremost, is that I needed to import my number from my cousin's family plan. He went back home and doesn't intend to continue paying his contract lol, and I needed my number but had no control over the plan... so importing it to Net10/ST/etc was the only choice.

They don't have it at the Tmo stores. You have to get the plan on a new activation online or at a Walmart  :yuck

I never talk on the phone so it is perfect for me.

That's totally fine by me. I'll see how this one goes, and if it doesn't work I'll totally switch and save me 20 more bucks. :drool

Verizon, 2GB data and I think 400 minutes of voice. $79 a month. Coverage is good, customer service over the phone was flawless, so far.

Can't remember the amount of texts, but I am horrified that cell carriers can get away with charging for 160 character text messages separate from the rest of the service. ROKONKULOUS.

I'm at an impasse here.  Do I stay with Verizon, keep paying $90 a month, get a new phone, and keep my pretty good 3g service?  Or should I switch to Net10/Straight Talk, pay $45-55 a month, get a new (but probably not as good) phone, and get sub-par 3g service that might be throttled?

The kicker to either is that most of the places I go have wifi service, so the 3g is mostly needed for when I'm in the car or just randomly someplace where I need quick info...

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I chose a specific iPhone for Straight Talk.  It uses Verizon towers...

So far, other than having to replace my initial phone, I haven't had any problems out of it.  I've mostly been running off of Wifi though.  My download speeds may be slow, but I'm getting the results I want, and I'm only paying $45 a month for it.

Granted, my boss was kinda pissed that I went with Straight Talk over Net10 because we're running promotions and it makes us look good if we sell it.  But then I reminded him that with the phone I have, they couldn't have activated it for me anyway.

I'll give it another month and see if I have any complaints. Though right now paying $50 doesn't sound like a good deal at all now they've capped data at 1.5GB. I might look into Timo now.

I haven't actually got Spotify on my phone yet.  I'm still debating on whether I want to get the streaming service or not.  I do have Pandora though, and I've used it once.  It wasn't bad.  I think it played at 128kbps.

I got the iPhone 4.  It was cheaper to go that way.  I originally got the 5, but it doesn't play well with Straight Talk (the guy at Walmart who sold it to me, who is also a friend of mine, said that 1 out of 3 get returned because they don't work with it).  The one thing I found out in hindsight is that the newest iOS update is the culprit.  My phone's OS isn't above 6.1.1 right now.

Also, I think it should be noted that if you're going to be playing a lot of videos or streaming a lot of music, Straight Talk/Net10 might not be the best option for you.

Even though the service is listed as "Unlimited," you'll get throttled down if you use more than 100mb per day and 2gb per month of data.

[Edit] However, there are free apps out there for iPhones (and I'm sure Android has them too) that monitor how much data you use.  I've got one now just to be safe.
