Man the story was god awful.
Welcome to the world of everybody who isn't an MGS fan.
I love the MGS stories, as bad and convoluted as they are cause they were awesome to experience within a videogame. I recognize that the story here is told worse and is more of a badass shonen anime, guess what you bought an action game by Platinum, you shouldn't have expected an amazing story or even for it to be told well considering Vanquish and Bayonetta.
I never thought MGS was convoluted and bad until 4, and I hold that they weren't.
While it would be nice to think of this as just a shonen anime, it kind of is a odds with itself when it comes to tone. The action is over the top, the music is rocking, and then there's that final boss. Yet, the story is dealing with tons of serious things, there isn't that much humor honestly, and outside of that final boss the game takes the enemies pretty serious. People are accusing the new Tomb Raider of having it's game and story not mesh well, but I find it strange this game wasn't accused of it. Maybe people have just given up on MG and the series has retroactively became stupid and crazy. I know I've given up, but it wasn't always.
Platnium did'nt do the story, a dude a Kojima productions did and it sucks. I don't come to Plat for story, I've loved all thier games for thier gameplay and asthetics. Vanquish is my GOTY. I really only wanted to play Rising for thier gameplay. The thing is it still could have had a good story and the development arangement sure gave it a chance.
The thing is they still try. There's some themes here, dealing with your past, dealing with your role in life, ect ect. its perfect theme's for a character like Raiden who while at the end of two kind of had the same arc, we weren't sure what his motivation in life would be. In a world that doesn't have a focus, it's the perfect setting for this story. Yet the story dosen't do anything really. We've got antagonist who the game obviously wants us to see the comparison's between them and Raiden, but fuck if we ever know what the heck they are about or why we should care. That's a huge problem. The Desperado Elite should have had bigger roles in the game. Yet all you get is a cutscene for most and then they die. They are obviously meant to kind of mirror the bad things Raiden dosen't want to be and question Raiden's beliefs, but fuck we hardly get enough of them to mean anything. I'm not even sure what the fuck Sam was trying to do and yet he's obviously an important part of the story. The game pushes him, but in the end he didn't mean anything. In the end my problem is I have really no idea how Raiden got from who he is at the beginning to Raiden at the end, but the game is filled with speeches about him talking about who he is. It just adds up to nothing. I hated it.
MGS already told stories like this one in 1 and 3 and it's a shame they weren't able to reach the quality of those. Obviously this game had a rocky development, but still I'm pretty disappointed with the story.
