Dr. Drew is a pretty crappy doctor

Quote
Mindy McCready is the fifth former cast member of “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” to die in the past two years.

The 37-year-old country star, who appeared on Season 3 of the VH1 show, where she suffered an on-camera seizure, was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home on Sunday. Authorities said she was the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr and former “Real World” cast member Joey Kovar also appeared on the show’s third season. Starr died in March 2011 at 44, while Kovar, 29, died in August 2012.

“Grease” actor Jeff Conaway, 60, who appeared on the show’s first season, died of pneumonia in May 2011. However, the doctor who treated him for drug addiction for years told CNN it was his dependence on prescription painkillers that eventually cost him his life.

Authorities said that Season 2 cast member Rodney King’s death in June 2012 was the result of accidental drowning, but the alcohol, cocaine, marijuana and PCP found in the 47-year-old’s system were contributing factors.

Okay, I'm sure these people are all really broken and that's not his fault, but you know, if you're really messed up, you should probably consider going to real rehab instead of reality TV rehab.

What the hell happened to him? I loved him and Adam on Loveline. I don't remember him being such a shill back then.

Most all of those people were in and out of rehabs multiple times before they ever took the Dr. Drew paycheck.

I used to really enjoy listening to Love Line with Drew and Adam Corolla.

Dr. Drew appears pretty well-centered as far as celebrity doctors go, but he's also pretty rigid. I'm not a big fan of people who use polyamory and bisexuality as an excuse to abuse their partners' trust, but it doesn't mean it never works anywhere for anyone.

I haven't listened to the show in years but I recall him always saying experimenting with threesomes when you're in a committed relationship with one of them is nearly always a bad idea. I don't remember anybody who was in a real poly relationship with multiple partners they were committed to calling into the show. But I wouldn't really expect people like that to want his advice as most of the callers are pretty idiotic regarding sex and relationships.

Yeah, that's true.

I've seen poly relationships last a long time; I'm not comfortable with it, and wouldn't do it myself, but I can see that it can work for some people. I've also seen couples who decide to become polyamorous, and it's almost always one person who became bored, wants to move on, but hasn't been able to manifest the bravery needed to break things off.

I'd heard Drew talk to people who called in, asking if it was OK to be in a poly relationship, and I think he never said no. Some of those callers wondered if they'd ever convince the object of their affection to become monogamous, Drew said that's a bad idea, and I agree. However I feel like he also said the thing in converse situations, where a monogamous target would have been encouraged to try polyamory, and Drew thought that was a bad idea as well. It always felt like Drew just wanted people to know ONE PARTNER and also KNOW WHICH GENDER YOU LIKE... It felt really locked down.

The only guy I know who was in that kind of set-up was doing pretty good for a year or two, enjoying his GF bringing home strippers for them to play with and such, until she developed a coke habit, snorted her way through his retirement nest egg, fled the country and literally ended up on the Interpol wanted list

...It was a good run?

A couple I've known since college have been "open," and are open-married even still. They're doing alright, coming on 22 years now. An online friend in Canuckistan has a bisexual wife; they've been open, I think they're on 6 years now. And then there was that lawyer couple I knew in college, into the Gor scene, they'd been together for over 10 years. That's my whole list of people for whom it appears to work, and good on them.

I've seen an equal number of relationships which failed at being "open." Not coincidentally, each of them started as monogamous, and tried to move into an open thing later. "That trick NEVER works." /rockytheflyingsquirrel

I too have known such couples (Santa Cruz is that type of place?) but they've all lasted several years and don't constantly bring in new partners. It seems to be most stable with bisexuals who don't mind sharing partners within a day. The hetero ones seem to be very compartmentalized which doesn't work so well with such relationships.

Yeah, actually one of the couples I know for whom the open thing works is a pair I met when we were all at school at UCSC. Then again, one of the couples which broke up after "going open" was also from UCSC.
