I really don't get Gran Turismo
« on: February 24, 2013, 07:26:12 AM »
To me it's so.... bland. The cars don't feel fast. Acceleration seems slow as molasses on nearly all cars and the overal game just isn't fun to go through.. It also never really clicked with me as a 'driving simulator' as it brands itself. It just doesn't feel very realistic to me. Do you also feel terribly indifferent about Gran Turismo as much as me ?

Y/Y ?

Play it with a racing wheel. With a controller I prefer more arcadey racers like Dirt and Grid from Codemasters.

FUlly agreed. I bought a ps2 a bit late in a Gran Turismo 4 pack and was really excited because realistic racing games were always lacking on Nintendo consoles. Played it for maybe ten hours and they game never clicked for me, it's just boring. AI is lifeless and it fells weird that the car you use can be so good you just dominate the competition, al least it was like that in many of the games early races. I played PGR2 a couple months before and prefer that way over Gran Turismo.

Driving model in GT5 feels "right," to me as far as driving in real-life is concerned. My issues with GT are the bad grind for cars (some of which aren't in arcade mode so you have to do that for them), the license tests (that GT5 thankfully ignored when they were required for career mode in GT1-4), and circuits. Real-life tracks just aren't as amazing to race on as some arcade racer circuits. Maybe it's the speed difference, I dunno. But point to point or rally races are better uses for simulator physics than circuits.

A racing wheel could indeed make it a #GAMECHANGER yeah, good point. Wouldn't wanna use a racing wheel and pedals without a racing chair though. Seems uncomfortable and tacky on a couch or bed. Am I right?

I'm definitely in the arcade racers camp as well. Stuff like NFS Most Wanted on the PS2 was amazing. Even Asphalt Injection on the PS Vita is a shitload of fun.

I got the stand from Fanatec and that's an alright solution if you don't have a good table lying around. It's way overpriced though. A proper racing seat would be the best, but then you need a large closet or a dedicated nerd dungeon for it. You might also need to turn off a few of the driving assistants to get a realistic experience.

I tried to get into it a bit, but you gotta really be a car/racing fan.  The grind is about 1000x worse than any jrpg I've played :lol

this is why we have burnout, mario kart, super off road, etc.

Once you learn how to drive it isn't that much of a grind. In the beginning you can just outspend the competition, but sooner or later you're going to have to learn how to tackle those curves. You also get plenty of free cars from winning events that you can use for entering other ones.

How do you play with your wheel?

I bought a high end Fanatec Porsche wheel but put it aside after a few weeks because it's so hard to set up.  I clipped it on my desk at first but it was leaving some marks on my desk which is made of very nice wood.

Maybe I should get this but it looks like too much,

That's the stand I use together with my Logitech G25 wheel. It's still not a very good solution since you can't screw the pedals to the foot stand. I ended up using double-sided carpet tape which makes it okay.

What you really would like is something like this.

It's just dogshit boring to me.  I don't care for all the "zomg realism" in car games.  Can I get points for wrecks like in Burnout?  If not it sucks.

I think the draw is that people get to drive cars that most of them won't ever be able to afford.  The problem with Gran Turismo is that you almost always have to drive a car shittier than what you own for 10-20 hours.

Driving powerful cars in full speed with accurate physics is quite demanding. I prefer driving mid-range cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution which is more suitable for my driving skills. Trying to control a Lamborghini on the Nürburgring is a hopeless endeavor.

It's the handling the curves part.  It's like my car is magnetized to the wall

I don't think GT's physics are that realistic.  I've done 90 degree turns at 50 mph with a Porsche easily but the game would never let me  pull that off.

If you disable damage you can rely on pool physics to tackle those curves.

It always feels to me like Gran Turismo is a game where there are no drivers present. As if the cars drive by themself or something. Living cars, no humans present.

this is the kinda shit that I'm talking about. The steering in GT is so outrageously bad that when you steer too much to the left or right your car will be screeching and slipping out of goddamn control for at least 3 hours  ::)

PC supposedly has some really realistic race sims but presentation obviously isn't quite up to par with big budget console games,

The realism isn't the point. Btw which Gran Turismo? I loved 3 but hated 4. The point is the driving has a lot of depth to it that it derives from realism. Knowing when to brake, when to accelerate, shit like that.

The last GT I played was 3 yeah. I think I played it up until 45% or something. And unlike how Don Flamenco mentions that the grinding aspect turns him off, I actually I'm a grinder at heart, so in that regard I'm not bothered by that.
I think that it irks me to slow down when I'm playing racing games. The fun factors in racing for me are 1. gotta go fast, and 2. drive as dangerously and daring as possible while pulling off crazy manoeuvers perfectly.

I guess PGR was the best at making you feel like a great driver without being too unrealistic.  Too bad it only ran at 30fps which detracted from the sense of speed.

Yes, but that's missing Smooth Grooves' point: Most people want to drive that Porsche or Ferrari out of box. They don't want to spend time in a car they may possibly have (Mitso Lancer/Ford Fiesta/Honda Civic) in races for hours or just doing hot-laps with those because they have to grind the cash to get the Ferrari's.

Having those unlocked for people to dick about with would be a nice sandbox. If people want to learn, hey great. If they don't and want to crash the cars into walls, who's to say they should learn how to play the game?

There are plenty of other racing games to choose from if you want more assistance. Maybe you could try Kinect Joyride.

If you don't want to spin out in Gran Turismo you need to be careful about never doing full steering unless you're in low gear. You should also never turn and break at the same time.

I won some races by cutting short over hundreds of metters of grass each turn, is that realistic? PC sims of the 90 like Formula 1 or Grand Prix Legends are probably 100x more realistic the Gran Turismo...

If you want full realism you should try one of the PC sims mentioned above or maybe something like V8 Superstars Racing. Gran Turismo is a happy medium.

you basically have to attach one wheel to it semi-permanently so it's tough to switch between platforms. I got it plus the MS wheel for Forza 2. It works with a bunch of PC games but without force feedback (yes people bitch about this non-stop but i've given up on it)

I'm not that hardcore really - Forza is just a toe in the ocean. I have all this wacky stuff on Steam but haven't gotten into any of it yet

i found that the pedals were too sensitive in Forza, so I tucked little sponges under them. Give it a shot!

the MS wheel is a bitch to keep stable on it though. Basically i have it tied down so tight it's never coming off again.

Yeah they were, I had half squash balls under them. I was one of the few who didn't mind the MS wheel. I know the serious wheel heads hate it, but it's fine for what I wanted it to do.

It's a shame you can't use Logitech's wheels on the 360. Hopefully they'll fix that on their next console.

yep, and that's the stuff that kills you in Tokyo storage-wise. I mean, if I could pay 4x the price for one thing that works on everything, I would vs buying 2 or 3 separate things

yet it's seen as a killer-app and system seller.
What the deuce is up with the confusing prologues and subtitles by the way?
This is seriously how someone who doesn't keep up with the series (me) thinks about them when they see the gameboxes in stores: "Prologues and other 'blabla editions' must be glorified and extended demo versions of an unfinished GT project with not as much content or length as a numbered GT title. I better skip this shit"

it's not just "seen" as a killer app and system seller.  it pretty verifiably is both of those things.

I was aware of that while writing it.

If you were, you wouldn't have added the word "yet" and "seen," as they help imply that the perception is different than reality. Example: Canadians are pedantic dicks, yet they're seen as nice.
