Pretty much any game is better than Sonic. Sega still has plenty of awesome classics. You should pick up one of the Mega Drive collections if you don't already own one. They're still putting out great games like Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles, but soon I guess it will only be Football Manager and Total War left.

Mario >>> Sonic

Zelda, Metroid... well SEGA has nothing that can stand up to those franchises. Phantasy Staro? GTFO

Sega has such a versatile library. Brawlers, fighters, shooters, racers, platformers, rpg's, action games, puzzlers, sports games.

Every gen they brought new stuff too. With Nintendo every gen its the same few games that are cool, Sega didn't roll like that.

Nintendo has a few amazing games themselves of course, but I always liked the freshness and arcadeness of Sega games more. They were always more flashy, more in your face, but with great depth to boot.

I love the NES/Famicom and the SNES/SFC but I -personally- liked Sega's output more. I think this is largely down to a couple of things : firstly that the NES didn't really happen in the UK , nor did the Master System so our gaming exposure to Nintendo was limited to their early arcade games - an area where Sega absolutely dominated them. Throw in Brits playing C64/spectrum and the ST/Amiga all through the NES/MS days and we just didn't particularly care at the time.

Then the Megadrive happens - the arcade games that people love are suddenly at home in a near-as-damn-it identical way. it handily out strips the Amiga/st in this department - games are pricy but video stores rent out games and everyone goes out and jumps on Megadrive.

Ultimately it's that Arcade/Megadrive period where Sega went above - pretty much forever - Nintendo in my heart. Afterburner , outrun, space harrier, quartet, altered beast, shinobi, super hangon, golden axe etc and then to take a huge chunk of those and put them on a home console with extras ? Oh yes.

Sega lost their way for sure but when Sega get things right they just have a different magic than what Nintendo have : Panzer Dragoon Orta, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Yakuza, PSO, Rez, Gunvalkyre, Chromehounds,  Outrun 2 etc - yes I know some of these are publishing deals rather than "true 1st party"

I add the 32 bit period to this too, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop, Virtual On, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing, Star Wars, Daytona, Decathlon,  also some original like Panzer Dragoon, Burning Rangers.

In the UK the Saturn was still-born and we were back to the arcades - but the price of the Saturn, ill will from the 32x and Megacd , and the frigging Playstation meant that no one cared about Sega or Nintendo. This was also part of the last hurrah for British arcades (in any substantial way)

I was in Blackpool again in feb - this place used to have a 2km stretch of arcades full of games back in the day - now it's just slots/gambling with the odd outrun 2 or whatever. Blackpool used to be a gamers wet dream - now it's people playing Camel Derby :/

Sega has a classic game in like every single genre, and besides that has the industry standard on whole genres (arcade racers being one, rail shooters being another, light gun games being another). Nintendo does not have that. At most, they have Mario which is the top plat former, fire emblem is a top srpg, metroid is a top action action adventure. But for everything else you Will never see the best A genre offers with Nintendo. For example, Animal Crossing. I love it but it isnt a top tier sim series.

Nintendo is almost never at the top of a genre. Good, but not goat status.

On the other hand:

Streets of Rage - best beat em up franchise
Panzer Dragoon - best rail shooter franchise
Virtua Cop - best light gun game
Virtua Fighter - best 3d fighting game franchise since inception
Skies of Arcadia - one of the best traditional jrpgs made.
Outrun/Scud/Daytona - cream of the crop arcade racers.
Shinobi ps2 - cream of the crop 3d action game.

Nintendo even let Sega touch one of their heralded franchises, F-zero. What happens? They dominate Nintendo and show them how it's done. It isn't even close.

That said, nintendo knows how to put out a quality product. I think snes and genesis are about on par with each other. Snes coming out edging on genesis With games like chrono. But in the end, Nintendo had no part in making software like chrono. They just supplied devs a platform to do so. That's where Nintendo wins. But if we are talking sheer library? And diversity and quality within it?

Sega.

As far as pushing the industry forward, the industry always valued from crazy companies who did crazy shit in terms of variety and experimental software unless you're purely interested in Hollywood gaming.

SEGA of course. Every generation they'd make (and/or publish) amazing and creative games. Even this gen they put out Valkyria Chronicles, Resonance of Fate, Bayonetta and Vanquish. Phantasy Star is of course my favorite RPG series ever and Skies of Arcadia is up there. SEGA makes my favorite racing games (save Wipeout). And I have a soft spot for the 16 bit Sonic games.

Nintendo's games in the NES and SNES era were god-level (I'd rank Mario World, LTTP and Super Metroid as some of my favorites of all time, easily). But I never really liked the N64 as most other people and that really determined the direction Nintendo went with their next few systems. Mario, Zelda, Metroid... perhaps one short-lived revival of a more obscure series.

Listen figgurt, Sega games are easy to pick up but hard to master. You know what Nintendo has been trying to achieve for 30 years with fucking tutorials.

A game like Sega Rally has much more depth then Zelda, which is fucking straightforward.

Sorry you'd rather ride another meaningless lap in Mario fucking Kart and think that's DEEP cause of WHIMSY.

I know everybody is going to disagree with me on this but: Classic 2D Sonic > Classic 2D Mario.
I can certainly say that I loved SMB3 over all the sonics, but if given a choice I would take all the 2D Sonics over all the 2D Mario because together they would give me more enjoyment. I dont consider Doki Doki Panic a Mario game and I only ever really loved DDP and SM3

Name a Nintendo game even 1/10th as good as Football Manager. (My point being as it is now the only genre they really overlap is Kart Racers and SEGA are ROYALLY buttfucking Nintendo there)
