The CPD is a private corporation owned by the Republican and Democratic parties specifically designed to wring out any potential interest* or debate. I don't know why other countries (like the UK last time) want to copy it so bad. (Okay, well, I do.) But it does properly illustrate what our culture thinks of "debate" and of "argument" in contrast to what the concepts mean. (Throw in "conversation" to that list.)
You'd have loved the Intro to Logic class I took in college Oscar, "but Socrates ISN'T a cat...[repeat for class after class]" (Or for that manner the college algebra class I took where the students started arguing with the professor that 2/2 must equal zero because if you divide something by itself you'd have nothing left.)
*Perot got in the debates through overlooked holes in the initial rules, they made sure to fix that immediately after the election.
