This thread is also one thread on a board that only really cares about gaf in one single thread.

We had discussions but they never really felt like arguments. Arguments are when emotions are involved. When I had philosophy class, emotions were rarely involved. We talked about Nietzsche and we had a polite dialogue about his claim that God is Dead. I guess I'm just lucky.

Never had arguments in Phil either. We were taught argumentation by the lecturer and wrote essays to demonstrate understanding. Get walked through pre-constructed arguments, follow the chain, recreate what you were taught. More existential stuff was general just a bunch of students being like....yeah, maybe. "What do you think about this?" "Yeah, maybe."

Poli Sci classes got heated sometimes just by their nature. More specialized upper division courses like the structure of Chinese government and systems of power in the Middle-East...you're asking for someone to get mad.

An argument is simply a disagreement.  You don't have to get emotional and when you do, you've usually lost.  A debate, I'd say, is a formal argument.  Not much difference, otherwise.

I can't even imagine a philosophy class where you don't get a chance to practice arguing.  It's like a language class where you don't get a chance to practice speaking.

We'd make papers and frame our debate and then the whole class would say what they felt. I guess your definition is correct.

Sorry. We did have arguments. But it was mostly text-based in that we'd read philosophical material in class. And yes, in America to argue is often seen as bad whereas debating is good and healthy.
