He's right, though...

Success Means Being Happy
----
If working a full-time job leaves you feeling like you're only living part-time, is it possible that careers are overrated?

Nobody looks back on their life and says, "I should have spent more time at the office," so why do we make work our priority? If it's because we regard those who work really hard and earn a lot of money as successful, then let's reevaluate! They tend to have a lot of stress in their lives, high blood pressure, heart problems, ulcers, headaches and insomnia... Does that sound like success to you?

The only folks who truly love their jobs are the ones who have found their calling. Have you found yours? A nine-to-five job is not the only way to spell success, you know. Don't let the concept of change scare you as much as the prospect of remaining unhappy!

The thesaurus lists a "calling" as another word for career, and it's nobody's calling to hate what they do for a living. If success means being happy, are you on the right track?

The difference between who you are
and who you want to be
is what you do. -Anonymous.

In any case, it's unrealistic until a bunch of people go "you know we could double our positions available and solve the job crisis if we lowered the cost of living and hours to work to survive..."

Personally I find it a little laughable how he assumes EVERYONE works through lunch, overtime, etc. and he's so scared of having to have to do it too. Dude isn't even working yet. He writes half an essay on the injustices of the American work ethic and then goes "btw I'm still in college."

Well, yeah. Not everyone works through lunch. Just like not everyone gets a one-hour lunch or even a few breaks. Every job is different. The fact is: The American Work-ethic for jobs is pretty poor. Work your job to death with little to no time off, or face being fired because we'll find someone else that'll do the job instead of you!

Seems like basic supply and demand to me, tbh.

Things are pretty shitty (especially maternity leave) compared to elsewhere, but his complaining about it is pretty hollow.

Not really supply and demand. At least I feel.

My major issue with the American work system is the 9-to-5. Having to work 40 hour weeks to have a house you barely "live" in just seems counter-productive, to me. I'm not asking/wanting the European three-months-off vaction time, but damn... you know?

At least it's not as bad as in Japan, where an animator for A-1 Pictures was literally worked to death after having to work 600 hours in a single month.

I haven't heard about that, but yeah: Japan's work-ethic is AWFUL compared to that the US isn't so bad.

It's this combined with the notion that he has to "keep up with the brainwashed Jones" or he'll be "falling behind" somehow.

So why can't he? Plenty of people do this. He doesn't have to buy the gadgets and houses and cars. Does he begrudge those who do want those things and work endlessly for it? Because why else does he care if they're going on a different path from him? Or think he has to follow it?

It'd be OK if bosses and managers at all levels recognized that you're human, too. Shit needs doing, I think the majority of people that enjoy a civilized life know this. A nice place to be, where not everyone has to forage and hunt for food and fear predators and the tribe down the river, etc. etc.
But if you spend more time working for someone elses benefit than you spend sleeping it can get frustrating and alienating quick. Especially if the shit work some people do is suddenly just barely enough to secure a chair at the table... Nothing good can come from that.

That old guy shooting the burglar teens thread is just an endless loop of people coming in and going "welp, they broke in, they deserved it/i don't feel any sympathy for them" as if that has anything to do with the guy's case.

Console Doom.  The game doesn't have mouse look or anything like that.  The only drawback to using a pad is having to cycle weapons.  SNES Doom is oogly, but PSX Doom?  That's a fine way to Doom.

Do you publicly talk or admit about being a gamer?

There was a time, in my teens and early twenties, that I was very public about my gaming hobby. I used to talk about it everywhere or post about it in social sites. Now that I'm reaching 26, I've noticed that I do the exact opposite. I realized that the whole stigma is not really gone yet and people tend to judge and not give you the chance to know you when you tell them you play video games. It dawned on me how little I talk about it when one of my newest, close friends was kind of shocked when I mentioned I play a lot of videogames.

Had me wondering if any of you in GAF have gone through the same thing? Sure, you might talk about it in certain circles (like GAF) but do you talk about it in public?

As a gamer, what is something that non gamers say/do that gets under your skin?

Years ago at my old job, there was the girl in the office who said videogames rot the brain. I wouldn't let my kids play them. I wanted to turn around and say something but held my tongue. Or if someone asks, what is your hobby and gaming comes up on a list of things you like to do and they give you a funny look. In the end I don't care what people think but good gravy sometimes it can rub me the wrong way. Sometimes people look at gaming as a destructive hobby or being childish. I just don't get it sometimes lol.

That stigma may still exist, but I don't think I'd really care what people who dislike video games think. Not like they'd be my kind of people anyway.

I just try and not be obnoxious about my hobbies. Like I'm not going to go up to people and say "I love video games like PERSONA". I also don't try and talk about just video games with people especially when they aren't interested in them like I am. When someone is talking about how much they like CoD and don't know or care what Final Fantasy is, they probably don't want to heat about Persona 4. Thats fine, a lot of gamers on the internet don't seem to understand that not everyone cares about you're obscure dating sim and that doesn't mean they are filthy casuals.

When I find someone who actually likes what I like and wants to talk about that stuff then sure I can ramble on about that. As long as the person seems interested as well in what I'm saying about Persona. Yeah I'll talk about that in a public place, I mean why wouldn't I? I'm not ashamed of what I like.

But yet, I try not to just talk about games. I'm not defined by being a gamer. So I try not to just make conversations solely about video games.
