It was a real suicide attempt for false reasons.  People thought the dev couldn't get surgery to remove metal from an accident and it was played up as the misfortune of the accident and the pain from the metal in the body and the lack of surgery. It turned out they wanted to fund gender reassignment and indiegogo found out and considered it a scam.

Keep in mind I've probably only paid attention slightly more than segata has.
