i did have one friend who was, admittedly, extremely good at picking up very attractive girls. He was insanely arrogant about this and on one weird night out he was trying to pull a girl in Liverpool who , unbeknown to him, was from my hometown and i'd known since we were young. Given the one thing Cumbrians are extremely good at is being dicks to other dicks - the girl noticed me and gave me "the nod" and she let this guy throw all his best moves at her and all his chat up lines. She just kept asking him "who is your friend? Emergency room waits are long, but that's pretty much the case in any country with socialized health care.  And like any other country like that, they allow people in serious condition to cut the line.  I've had tons of experience with the medical system here, and it's actually quite good.  Part of why Japanese live longer than most, I'm quite sure.

Appendicitis can be deadly, regardless of the state of medicine in your country. It feels a lot like a bad stomachache or flu initially, so it's all too easy to write it off as nothing serious, certainly not worth going to the hospital for.  And once the appendix bursts, the patient is at severe risk of death even with treatment.  Cleaning a burst appendix is like cleaning up a smashed glass jar, except if you miss any pieces, the patient will likely die.  Mine burst when I was 14 and I was in the hospital for almost two months after the operation.
