How can it not be?

Eschaton says that Tokyo Drift is nothing more than an Initial D rip off starring a CAC.

I think it's the best Fast movie.

This should be a harmless if humorous thread about a funny news bit. Instead, it's already reaching its first round of offended olympics and features a guy who thinks Target's prices are outrageously high.

The best part of 2 Fast is the soundtrack.

Fuck the dialogue except WE HUNGRY.

Tokyo Drift and Fast Five make 2 Fast its bitch. John Singleton found crying in fetal position after his failure almost killed the Fast series and Justin Lin resurrected it :bow

I don't recall Obama objectifying any male State attorney generals! Obama judges them based on their competence. But he judges a female State attorney general on her tits and ass.

Also, Obama should apologize to Beau Biden.

Obviously the reason PS3 didn't burn up the charts was the lack of USB powered vibrator. I don't even think it was backwards compatible with the PS2 one.

Comics in Japan were never ghettoized to the extent comics in America were - same with its animation. In america, comics were for kids, and so were cartoons. Japan came around to the idea that both comics and animation could handle all manner of genre way faster, and both media matured in a way only American animation is JUST NOW catching up to, and american comics are still struggling against.

That's not to say japanese comics don't succumb to the same bullshit that american superhero stories wallow in. Or that there are miniseries/graphic novels here in America that are concieved with beginning, middles, and endings before a single word is written or image is thumbnailed.

But Japan can do more with comics than America because Japan didn't let their hangups over what comics COULD BE get in the way of the people making those comics, and so they're allowed to do more. Superhero comics in america are, at their core, a combination of soap opera and wrestling promo, and despite the best efforts of some quality storytellers, they're going to be that until they finally wither and their parent companies pull the plug and harvest what's left for movie fodder, and nothing else.

So...do i get called a hipster if I bring up R. Crumb and all the other weird 50s and 60s comics that are decidedly adult oriented?   Or the vast amount of graphic novel + independent comics that have been produced alongside superhero comics.     Osamu Tezuka and other adult manga writers probably predate a lot of that, but it's not like anyone in the U.S. knew who he was when he was first starting out.

A lot of the graphic novels and such seem to be a lot more niche in America than non-kid geared manga is in Japan. I don't know too much about comics but this is just what I see... even the people around my age who are into comics are more into stuff like Wolverine and Batman than Maus, Sandman, Moebius, etc.

It does suck that most comic discussion 99% superhero soap opera shit that will never end. It is nice when people talk about stuff that isn't cape oriented and while a lot may be out there, cape stuff dwarfs it to such a large extent that to most people "comic books" just mean superheroes.

And yeah euro stuff is pretty cool.

well, he posts in every thread about how he's a virgin, so it makes sense.   also the same dude who used to go out of his way to post the most fucked up stories with day-ruining thread titles, iirc (more so than other posters.)

edit: yeah, adult comics are more niche in the U.S., but the output is still huge...it's just not all concentrated in a few major cities like it is in Japan, nor is comic reading nearly as ingrained in the culture.   The stuff about Japan realizing the potential of the medium is what got me though...that's just plain weeaboo talk.   The ensuing discussion about power level of SF characters according the game's storyline is pretty ace though.

Japanese comics have achieved more of the potential of the medium than American comics to me. American comics have occasional adult comics but those are specific niches. Meanwhile stuff like Adolf has its own genre and is common fare in Japanese comics. I don't understand how anyone well versed in both countries comic industries could argue otherwise. Point me to an American equivalent to Pushman and maybe I'll change my statement.

Japanese comics cover a wider range of subjects and genres. When was the last time you read an American Comic about a crippled young man who turns to handicap basketball league to find meaning in life? Never? Case closed. Enjoy your superhero fodder.

Yeah, I hate to be on the side of the girl with the Sailor Moon avatar but she's right.

Let's take Deathnote, a middling Japanese quasi thriller semi shounen manga. It is about a guy who obtains a book that allows one to write the name of any person in it, killing them in the process. He uses it as a means to kill people he deems evil, who can't be touched by the extent of the law as a means to seek justice, and slowly perverts himself into a psychopathic homicidal maniac.

Original Story, original setting, original idea, original concept.

And that's fucking Death note, as middling as it gets.

What are American comic fans going on about? The Walking Dead? Oh. Zombies. How original.

Eviscerated.

the focus on "mature" comics always seemed counter productive to me when most of the best work is either geared at younger folk or at the very least 'family friendly'. Calvin & Hobbes alone pisses on most like the illegitimate merchandise shows.

Didn't say all comics should be mature. And i mentioned nothing of maturity. My favorite comic is One Piece, so I certainly have nothing against family friendly. Krazy Kat, Tin Tin, Peanuts, and Calvin and Hobbes are among my faves. I only mentioned diversity in story lines, subject matter, and themes which I think propel Japanese comics over American comics.

I wasn't speaking to any of your points in particular himu. Though wouldn't you say coming of age stories are aggressively prevalent in japanese comics? I haven't really read much japanese outside of Planetes, Vinland Saga and a bit of Ghost in the Shell so I'm not gonna feign too hard.
