Coming of age stories are mostly tied down to specific genres like boys and girls comics. Which are mostly for young kids and aimed at such.

It isn't like these are outlandish titles I'm bringing up. These are popular titles for their specific genres. The great thing about Japanese comics is I can read a comedy comic (Yotsuba, which is family friendly!), romance title (Kare Kano), horror title (Uzamaki), historical drama (Town of Evening Calm), action adventure ( One Piece) without breaking a sweat. These are all coveted titles. When it comes to American comics you're lucky if you even find one that breaks outside the superhero archetype.

This is why X-Factor is the best X-book. It is a spin on the super hero genre in that instead of saving the world or whatever they solve sleuth like mysteries with their powers. That's different and for that reason it is more engaging.

As a fan of both comics and manga, there is absolutely no chance on earth that I would choose comics over manga.

gaming feminism thread about 'poor attitudes toward women in the industry' turned into 'women cosplayer should expect to be groped because of what they are wearing and men just can't help themselves'.

Gaming side is a fucking mess. They don't want to be considered man children for playing games and yet these threads play out the same way every time, like plenty of posters are 15 and unable to empathize with others.

Also the claim that you have to try hard to find alternative manga is fictitious. Go to any comic store. Look at all the American comics. Aisles and aisles of mainstream super hero wank with one section dedicated to indie comics. Then look at the manga section: MW, Kare Kano, Berserk, Slam Dunk, Yotsuba&, One Piece, maybe even a volume of Buddha, will probably all be I'm that section. Manga wins, again. You don't even HAVE to try. Though the occasional good graphic novel is released like Persepolis or what ever does get caught on the blip meter. Thankfully, since I read comic sites I don't have to look for good American comics that don't involve super bullshit.

On a serious note, you're picking and choosing cause you prefer Manga over American comics, preferring it is fine but I find this attempt at making manga superior to comics objectively as a very pick and choosey endeavor that is pretty far fetched even for you, Himumu.

Both me and my brother love Manga and Comics, he prefers the former and I prefer the latter which is fine. But to go on about some of your favorite niche Manga while focusing on superheroes when it comes to Comics is rather idiotic. Can't wait till you fall back on your "I was trolling LOL" schtick that everyone sees through, buddy. Both have their niches while specific styles and genres are the top sellers and get more attention. You got your Batman, Spidey and them for America then you got your DBZ, Naruto and One Piece for Japan. It is what it is. Trying to be objective about it is as distinguished mentally-challenged as it gets due to the striking similarities between them.

You want some good comics? You got a fantastic Comic thread here on The Bore with knowledgeable people like Eric P, Cormacaroni and others giving great recommendations on the regular. Why don't you do what you do best and explore my man?

I already know good comics. I didn't say American comics suck. You are putting words into my argument because you think I'm a weeaboo when I'm not. I also didn't say that alternative American comics DON'T exist. But when I go to my comic store, I definitely see a signal to noise ratio on the American comic section. Aisles and aisles of super hero crap And barely anything for indie comics.  I have to TRY to find something interesting. Not saying all manga is great cuz it's not and i hate power level shounen crap as much as I hate super hero crap. But more often than not, if I'm in the manga section I will find something alternative that interests me. I don't get that with American comics while at the store. For them i have to read blogs and crap to find it even exists. I have to order my shit through fucking Amazon when I really don't want to.

Plus, I still haven't found any American comics like Beck or Real. Know any sports American comics? Or comics about people who just love music starting a band? Sports manga is one of my favorite things. Noticeably absent in western comics despite the popularity of sports. It is just an example of the further reach and pull manga has than American comics.

It also pisses me off how manga is always labeled as pedo and loli power up shit when the stuff I read is anything but. So yes I'm bitter at American comic fans and especially the super hero slut types.

Why do people on GAF feel the need to quote an offensive post even if countless people have already quoted it?  Is it really that important to go on record as not being racist/homophobic/sexist/whateverist?

I asked you to supply me with me evidence that American comics are more or just as diverse as manga. I even admit to my ignorance. You say that of course that super hero comics are so popular - they sell the best while making the argument that Japanese comics are LESS diverse than American comics despite shounen being popular and their industry has entire genres that still sell and exist despite that such as sports, romance, fantasy, and horror with an equally diverse lineup? You have called me being an expert (I have claimed no such thing) amid ignorance while you are doing that very thing now. And you still - despite name dropping niche comics - failed to prove my argument wrong.

Let's take sports. There is an entire genre of manga dedicated to it, with every sport represented, from basketball to mma. I asked you to supply examples of American comics that could be considered in that category and you chose to attack instead and whiffed the question with a non answer giving me everything I needed to know, proving me correct.

You talking about the "disgusting" post in the Magic Johnson's son thread?
Yes, but it happens constantly.  Especially in celebrity death threads come to think of it.

I suppose people just want to post something and calling someone out for being offensive is low hanging fruit.

Japanese comics have achieved more of the potential of the medium than American comics to me. American comics have occasional adult comics but those are specific niches. Meanwhile stuff like Adolf has its own genre and is common fare in Japanese comics. I don't understand how anyone well versed in both countries comic industries could argue otherwise. Point me to an American equivalent to Pushman and maybe I'll change my statement.

Japanese comics cover a wider range of subjects and genres. When was the last time you read an American Comic about a crippled young man who turns to handicap basketball league to find meaning in life? Never? Case closed. Enjoy your superhero fodder.

Exactly that. Showing everyone else where they stand on the issue. Facilitates group building. I do agree that it's annoying to read though. In person you'd get a chorus of sighs or obvious looks and the like.

"Sports? Who gives a shit." Is such a convenient answer. All I said is that manga is more diverse and cover more subjects yet you call me.ignorant and are unable to back that  claim up. You can't even supply me with sports American comics - which you say are more diverse than manga - despite countless of examples for the counterpart.

You say I'm ignorant but act like an expert but you have done nothing but cite random niche comic and attack me (call me weeaboo, call me ignorant despite never claiming non-superhero comics don't exist and being a fan of many, and now you're just calling me opinionated despite having inflated opinions yourself and never refuting ANY of my arguments).

As for the business, who cares what he thinks? He's an asshole.

Sorry, I hate it when people are all YOU'RE WRONG yet can't come up with a single reason as to why aside strawmen and passive aggressive insults. I hate passivity. How else am I supposed to respond to a conversation that goes like this:

"I think x covers more genres and subject matter than y. Y is great but x pushes it further."
"You're a weeaboo and biased. Y is better."
"Okay, if I'm so wrong, and I admit a tad of ignorance on the subject, x has an entire genre devoted to sports, does y?"
"Sports? Who gives shit?"
"But we are talking about diversity in genre and subject matter."
"You know what? You're confused and opinionated."

???

The entire exchange is insulting. He says we are listing niche comics when many if the comics I've listed are mainstream and highly successful but he says I'm playing expert amid being ignorant? Um.

it's true, there's no shortage of graphic novel memoirs and a lot of them are just meh...except interesting guys like Derf.  I like the "magical realism" existential type stuff like Mazzuchelli, Clowes more, but even that is a bit cliched at this point.

The west is also pretty big on crime graphic novels.  Parker, Better Living Through Crime, From Hell.   Definitely my favorite way to get a crime drama fix since I've seen most of the good crime movies.
