Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but having and sharing that opinion burdens you with the responsibility of knowing what an opinion is and how much an opinion is really worth. In real life, you don't get to say whatever you want and have everyone nod their head and smile. It seems there is an expectancy of that very thing online, and due to the nature of the internet, you never say anything without someone paying attention to it or responding or making a greater issue out of it. There is no small-scale dismissal. No, STFU Donny. So the forum becomes a big ball of noise if nobody curtails the nonsense.

I've noticed this more and more. The thread shitting rule without any nuance to it was definitely a problem since OPs couldn't be questioned about their terrible personal bullshit story or the need to post some horrible news that had no greater social problem to discuss. And people kept making these threads as trolls because no one could say shit.

The solution would be to allow a user only so and so many reports per day or only allow posts to be reported once overall, regardless of who does it. I don't know how hard something like that would be to implement though.

I think you hit the nail on the head, though a more diplomatic/PC approach could have probably gotten some feedback or more attention. I wish you had gone that route, and at least feigned interest, so that the policy could be brought up for discussion. It's something that invited some seriously terrible content when (in theory) it should have solved the problem(s) he discussed in the OP.

 I haven't checked the rest of replies, but I'm expecting a bunch of knee-jerk reactions and mockery of your last line (which did you in, as Himu said), instead touching the arguments. Oh well, people are content with admiring EL's new clothes, ones he was able to afford in the first place thanks to page views.

My original ban was because I tried to make an example of what I thought was a habitual shit stirrer and got it horribly wrong, ended up coming off as obsessive/weird instead. It was a fair ban, but my inspiration was largely that I wasn't having fun any more. Same thing today.

I don't mind smack talk and trolling/baiting if it can be met with the appropriate response or vitriol it deserves, at least that's fun... But on GAF I have repeatedly read not only successful baiting, and petty sniping, but the pages and pages of bollocks that ensue - without having the freedom to call a silly cunt a silly cunt.

I had a short back and forth with Duckroll earlier today and it is clear nothing is going to change there. Clearly moderation policy is informed by the behaviour at the top. I'd like to have continued taking part in good threads on GAF like the BritGAF OT, PoliGAF and others that are maybe fun / funny, but I joined back in the day to enthuse with others and have fair if not sensible discussions... The gaming side is nothing but a battleground for keyboard warriors and passive aggressive trolls, and its practically mod sanctioned. None of the 'characters' operating there have any of the fun or wit about them that the likes of demi and other exiles here used to show. Maybe I'm getting old. I can't be bothered with it. Reading it. Taking part. It's a very stupid place sometimes and I've wasted too much time on there as it is.

It was an extended ban he got after playing detective and going through someone's history (I think it was Dantis after his anti-Wii U thread) to prove that he's merely a fanboy trying to stir shit up. It came across as stalkerish and raised a few flags. He came here very charged up, got worse over the course of the ban, presumably 'cause everyone here is an asshole, and seemingly carried all that aggression and negativity back to GAF.

Some of us just wish the place was run better.   maybe it was the dream that there could be a huge, but mature gaming discussion site?  As borderline aspie as that sounds, I think that's what I originally joined for-- that perception that GAF is above say, gamefaqs.  It is sometimes, just like gamefaqs can be cool sometimes, but otherwise, a lot of the weird circle jerks are exactly the same, complete with the covert futa/loli dudes. I would still like to chat there since every poop miyamoto takes is documented by a thread, but the culture is pretty bizarre.

I feel like the smaller size of this board makes for some better discussions, along with the understanding that we all fuck with each other every once in a while or all the time or whatever lol, though sometimes I wish there were a lot more people so it wasn't as obvious that i post too damn much.
