New York City probably the most decent suburbs I've ever seen, honestly. Long Island ain't bad.

Depends what part... Over here we run the gamut from generic "Levittown" 50's/60's style suburbia, to the suburban ghetto, to small quaint old towns, to rich $$$$$ billionaire estate suburbs. But one thing they all have in common is the traffic is AWFUL.

Where on the island were you?

Living in suburbs just make you appreciate highways more. Although they can be nice if you have some spawns and want a house that is roomy and not too expensive. As a kid though, I always liked being in apartment complexes more since it's so easy to go to your friends house.

Are you ever not a self righteous prick, period? Prick? I just asked you a question. You posted a meltdown to a post of MAJOR GoT spoilers - not in the bore GoT thread but in the GAF THREAD - like it was nothing. I asked if you even read the books, a curious interest to see why you would have any vested reason to do something so fucking stupid, and you post your stupid eye roll smiley.

If anyone is self righteous, it's you.

I bet you're gearing up to post your eye roll smiley right now to the most tepid and normal of posts.

LOOK AT ALL THESE SQUARES

If that's a reference to the square foot comment, I'll again say that I don't mention that to inspire awe in the hearts and minds of city dwellers. The point to me is simply that the trade off is obvious. In terms of how far your dollar will go, you can pick between the desirability of the size of your home/property or the desirability of the location. I could turn my nose up at inner-city inhabitants and extoll the virtues of my town to them and wonder why they're not living here too, but I'm fairly certain I know what their response would be. "Why would I want to live in your shitty town where there's nothing to do?" To which I'd simply respond "touché."

i am not here for your serious discussion and i demand that you stop

my least favorite part of growing up in the burbs is how fucking LONELY it is. god fucking damn. wanna go to friends house? sheit, they're on the other side of the town. there's a kid across the street but he's a jerk, but the next door neighbors have no kids, half my neighborhood (well, it was when i was growing up) nothing but forest. The rest of my street were old people and people without kids.

School was a blessing for this reason. I'd go to daycare just so i could hang out with people my own age after school instead of going back to that hell hole to watch cartoons.

The US has had success in various FPS games, so his comment isn't entirely accurate.

With respect to StarCraft the obvious answer is that gaming hasn't been a true "profession" outside of Korea. Obviously the US has multiple professional SC2 gamers, as does Europe, but the main difference is that in Korea it's treated like an actual job. Teams ensure their players train for up to 14 hours a day with very few breaks. No one is the US is apparently willing to put in that type of dedication, and so far the US scene has really floundered. Europe is better due to having more dedication, but even they don't train as obsessively as the Koreans.

There's really only been one truly dominant, consistent non-Korean in StarCraft over the last 13 years. And he's a special case: doesn't really practice much, isn't obsessed with the game, etc. Stephano.

To me, while I agree that it's worth examining the benefits of cities versus suburbs going forward for both philosophical and pragmatic reasons, I think the personal preference is largely subjective and doesn't necessitate the level of elitism often exhibited from either side. Further, not all cities and suburbs are created equally. I like having a back yard and not sharing a wall with someone else for a reasonable price, so the 'burbs seem like the right call for us. But that doesn't mean I don't see the appeal of city living. There are trade offs no matter which choice you make.

I've got a house with separate walls and a small yard in the city. Short walk to shops, restaurants, bars, movie theaters, concert venues, etc. Granted, I don't have a gigantic house with a massive yard or anything, but I love what I've got.

That just falls under the "not all cities and suburbs are created equally" category. I won't pretend to be an expert in regards to every big city and their surrounding suburbs. I like what I know of the 'burbs, but I won't pretend to be an expert in terms of all the possible inner-city real estate in big cities. From what I do know, my house would be impractically expensive if it were in a desirable part of the city as opposed to being in a small town 20 miles from downtown. But, again, I'm not looking down from my perch on urbanites. I see the appeal, even if I don't ultimately think its for me.

As a reference point -- and I promise I'm not trying to brag because it's not that impressive a feat -- our house is 2,000 sq. feet on a half acre lot. In a desirable part of the city, that's be crazy expensive. I know of people renting in the city very modest places for more money than I pay for my mortgage.

My house is only slightly smaller (1,850), but I will give you the yard. We have a little front yard and a side yard. Our back yard is our patio with a pergola on it and our neighbor's driveway. However, we're in a desirable part of Seattle and can walk to pretty much everything we'd want.

I grew up in the suburbs and had a great childhood, but I'd never want to move back.

It's cute to see you all argue over city vs suburbs like it matters anymore. Its the digital age, get with the times people. Kids hang out over skype and google hangouts after school. Allowances are spent on digital goods, f2p games and amazon. Netflix replaced the movie theater and having a laptop is more important than a car. Even your xbox orders you pizza now. I didn't say all suburbs are the same. I said all subrubs I've been to are the same. However, Devo says that she lives in a great suburb so surely they exist. The point I ineffectively conveyed is that good suburbs seem so rare that pointing about that "hey you guys must lived in shitty suburbs" seems an odd point to make considering the shit:quality ratio of suburbs.

It really depends on the city I'm guessing. Houston is like 70% suburbs and they all suck. Every experience I've had in every suburb I've visited, no matter the city, from Dallas, to San Fran, to LA, to goddamn Orlando, Raleigh have been shit and pretty much copy pasta. Because Devo thinks her suburb is great, doesn't really change my own personal experience.

I don't like suburbs, but not all suburbs are god awful either. I'm sure they are out there, but they are so minuscule I'd rather to talk in objectives because goddamit, I'm lazy and I'd rather just pimp city/country livin' than be assed to find these so-called mythical burbs.

New York City probably the most decent suburbs I've ever seen, honestly. Long Island ain't bad.

Not in a burb at the moment technically. I am in Portland proper. Other than better access to restaurants and shops, as well as being busier during the day, it's relatively calm in my neck of the woods. (Save the weirdos who have meltdowns across the street.) I lived most of my life in a bay area suburb and went to school in SF, so I constantly got the best of both worlds. Also places like Berkeley and where I am now seem like hybrids.

Why would I have to read the books to enjoy a meltdown? I enjoy people getting worked up over nothing just as much as anyone here, so I posted the link. Then you barrel in with "BUT HAVE YOU READ THE BOOKS" as if the only people who can get any schadenfreude out of the situation are the holy and intelligent book readers. Himu please.

You raise a good point, but more people our age are buying cell phones than cars precisely because they prefer city life. City vs suburban and the digital crap aren't really a separate issue and it's interesting to discuss growing change in this age group and demographic.

Whether you've read the books or not isn't as important as the simple fact you posted a meltdown that covers a major spoiler on an got episode not even an hour cold in one of our most highly trafficked threads. Why are you even reading the book spoiler thread if you don't read the books or watch the show? I don't know. It's weird to me. What's especially weird to me is the complete disregard for show fans who probably read this thread and haven't seen the episode yet who thought they were safe from not reading the shows DEDICATED THREAD because Andrex - someone who doesn't watch the show nor read the books - decided it would be funny to link to a post that contains major spoilers.

I read the shit out of both.  animorphs was clearly superior though, even as a dumbass kid I knew that much.  Plus did Goosebumps have the little flipbook animation at the bottom corner of every page?  That's premium production value right there.
