Now I can't care any less about review scores BUT with that 7.5 amidst the higher scores, is there an ulterior motives here? I see people claiming being sponsored by MS/Xbox so is there reason to call bullshit? I mean, can't Naughty Dog investigate, are there laws being broke or is this standard practice?

Like I said, I don't care. I'm all over it. But the claims here make me think something more "dirty" is at play.

Solid gold. This is almost better than E3 stupidity.

But the real underlying issue with Polygon is that they have rated a game considered to be a masterpiece by most sites a point higher than a game like Fuse (6.5). Their credibility has gone out the window.

They had credibility? I thought the $750k Microsoft-funded "making of" did away with that before the site even launched.

Still, meltdowns are fun. GameSpot gave it an 8.0 also.

That Seth C thread is infuriating. I mean, I simply can't even begin to fathom the rationale of dolts actually supporting his cause. I understand people who don't give a shit, but the fact he now has Mod-immunity towards any criticism for his shameless self promotion is embarrassing.

Lastly, I don't even know why, but he probably has the most unlikable face I've ever seen. The epitome of what I would identify in public as a mouth-breathing douche.

I just wish we could have a serious conversation about Polygon and the nature of reviews without either the idiots blasting them or the over-sarcastic people making jokes about 'conspiricy meetings'. If you think politics and console jockeying doesn't ever happen in game sites, you are lying to yourself. What is this review from Polygon? I don't know and it doesn't matter, it just looks bad.

Polygon didn't do itself any favors with creating a self fellating documentary before they had even begun working. A doc that had heavy funding from Microsoft itself. If you ever wanted to establish credibility out of the gate than that was the worst move possible. It looks really bad. So when they have numerous articles after the criticized XBONE reveal that were far more positive than most sites and aritcles including some that seem to defend the practices being presented than you are going to be called a mouthpiece for a console maker and not a serious site. It looks bad.

Of course when this review comes up you get the same. It fucking looks bad and it's thier own fault.

I thought Red Blaster was a Shenmue fan? I feel destroyed. I'm not going in that thread because 1. I'm tired of defending dreamcast ganes and 2. I'm tired of defending shenmue.

I learned last year that gamers can't handle the power of dreamcast when giant bomb couldn't spray tag Poison Jam in Jet Set Radio.

I made myself a video reply to giant bomb being awful gamers by doing a speed run of a fun level in jet set radio. And giant bomb actually responded by saying YOU DON'T PLAY FOR FUN WHY ARENT YOU GRINDING ALL THE TIME? You play so systematically! Or something. I don't think I've visited GB ever since.

Gaffy should teach them a lesson on "fun."

Honestly, I long for the day when people stop treating reviews as "serious business." And I say this as somebody who doesn't even dislike reviews. I'm not the type that thinks that every journalist (even games ones) are a hack and that the only opinions that can be trusted are my own or people I know well. For the most part, no matter the medium, if I'm interested in a product, I think it's kind of interesting to watch a consensus materialize. I just don't understand why people are so invested in it needing to go the way they expected.

I don't see the need for this serious conversation. video game enthusiast sites need to appeal to the special fellow demographic otherwise they can't get enough money for ads to stay afloat. Look at the disparity between Patricia Whatever's writing on Kotaku and NightmareMode - one is a hobby blog, the other a job; guess which is the spergier?

RPS is an outlier in that they try to not appeal to spergs, but I think most of those dudes live in poverty or have well-off spouses that effectively make them stay-at-home husbands.

If Gamespot gave it a 7.5 people would complain, but in regards to Polygon it just smells. Its their fault for trying to be a credible reviewing outlet while being FUNDED by Microsoft. That smell is something they'll need to live with until the end of time.

Not to mention the SimCity reviewing fiasco.

Reviews like Polygon and Gamespot really annoy me. I mean, Sony are taking massive risks providing us with these groundbreaking, expensive games and they don't even have the decency to show them some respect like us gamers. No wonder we're getting these cookie cutter, linear games when the people who strike out, who take a risk like Sony get burnt like this and have nothing but disrespect shovelled back. I'm really embarrassed to be a gamer right now.

God dammit, Momo. Quit quoting GAF posts without specifying they're GAF posts. This is the second time where I've started to type up a response in earnest as to how misguided this is only to come to my senses and think "hey, wait a minute... this reeks of GAF nonsense.." Then, a quick Google search later and sure enough, you're quoting somebody from GAF.

Fuck you, Momo.

One of my favorite things that people do in those threads is attempting to compare scores. Whether it's across different reviewers and different games (which is even more absurd) or just one reviewer, I find it odd that people think the score assigned is some scientific process that continues to be relevant forever. As though reviewers would go through their scores database and make sure that this 8.6 they're about to give a game is perfectly in line with past reviews. "Wait, I gave Game X an 8.3 a year ago and I think it might be better, so I need to adjust this score now." Or "Hold the phone, I can't give this a 9 when I gave Game Y a 9.5 a year ago or people will think I'm incompetent as this is clearly a better game."

I love to hear score discussions on press podcasts. Jeff Gerstman and Arthur Gies are some of the more entertaining ones to listen to. Hell, the entire GOTY discussion extravanganza Giant Bomb puts on. They truly believe they're assessing objective qualities or something, knowing that that's impossible. And the obvious hedging that goes on, with mailinglists (and now Twitter), where reviewers ask one another if they're the outliers and the moral quandaries that produces. It's so funny what they say out loud without realizing how ridiculous it sounds. I don't give a shit one way or another since I don't put any weight on reviews, but I really hope they don't go away so that I can observe the silly mental gymnastics that they cause, from inception to reception.

I left my house early last Saturday hoping for a quick cup of coffee and a little pastry before I had a power meeting with my staff (I make them work weekends, teehee!). Anyhoo, I got to  the Cup o’ Joe on Fifth at 7:45 a.m., only to find that they open at 8:00. WHO THE FUCK OPENS UP AT 8:00 ON A SATURDAY?  Anyway, the tattooed and pierced service “worker” who smelled like pot (gross) refused to open for me, saying I’d have to wait until the coffee was made. WHATEVER. The manager of this place needs to be alerted to the fact that he employs a DISGUSTING drug user who refuses to take the SPECIAL NEEDS of his customers (including my children) into consideration. I seriously do not know how you own a place like this and NOT KNOW WHO WORKS FOR YOU, HE REPRESENTS YOUR BUSINESS TO THE PUBLIC.  So I wait until 8:00 (the druggies actually opened late at 8:02). All I wanted was a dry triple shot soy  latte with extra foam at 170 degrees and fast, is that asking too much?) So I made my order (trying  to ignore who was making it) and THEN HAD TO WAIT FIVE MINUTES FOR THE ESPRESSO MACHINE TO WARM UP, DO YOU BELIEVE IT. So I had to wait for another five minutes. When the stoner made my drink (somehow oblivious to the fact that I was in a hurry) HE MADE IT WRONG, HE PUT FOUR SHOTS IN IT AND THE SOY WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO 170, MORE LIKE 150. Look, I know why this guy works at a coffee shop, he’s a loser, but how hard can it be? I tasted this disgusting concoction, rolled my eyes, then told  him  that IT WAS UNACCEPTABLE AND THAT HE’D HAVE ME TO DEAL WITH UNTIL HE GOT IT RIGHT AND THAT THIS COFFEE WAS BILGE. This guy could’ve been a terrorist, he looked swarthy and arabic (I refuse to capitalize it). So he made it again AND GUESS WHAT IT WAS WRONG AGAIN he didn’t put enough foam on it. At this point I was running late and needed my coffee so I took it (even though it was atrocious). I paid him even though he should have paid me for the time it took him to open and make the drink. I was so angry giving him money of course I didn’t tip him, as he counted my change out to me I looked at him, put the change into my purse and thought to myself “Do the math, bitch.” OY FUCKING VEY CUP O' JOE MORE LIKE CUP O' CRAP.

How dare someone have a dissenting opinion.

This seems to tie into the dust up yesterday about Seth C. Both threads feature GAF led "movements" that have been covered by outside news sites. No room for dissent on the popularity bus, I guess.

Edit: As for Feep, I know he got a hair transplant according to the grapevine on GAF. I dunno about the kickstarter though.

He said as much in a thread once - That he'd earned enough from the sales of his game to afford the transplant and that it was something that had an effect on his self esteem, so he did something about it.  I've never met Feep but I would honestly be disappointed if it were money donated toward making the game that was used rather than profit from selling the game.  Again, he's a stranger to me but he's struck me as one of the more normal people on GAF and I'd perhaps naively give him the benefit of the doubt.

It's like people can't agree that some aspect of something they like is in poor taste/exploitative/whatever and still like the thing overall.

Filmcritic Hulk wrote a blog about the ambient dialog in Arkham City being kinda fucked up with loads of "bitch" and some dude wanting to rape Harley Quinn and how that was probably inappropriate for a Batman game, and tons of people flipped their shit on him like he called everyone who liked that game a ticking rape bomb.
