He's one of those people who thinks that having read or watched a lot of obscure works (not that Madame Bovary or In Search of Lost Time are obscure, but the films and miniseries he mentioned certainly are) makes him into some sort of ultimate critic because he can easily compare a popular work of fiction with some obscure work that may have dealt with some of the same ideas. Meanwhile, he seems to be completely lacking in any capacity to understand the emotional resonance or (and there may be a better term for this, but I can't think of one right now), the artistic soul of any given work. He's almost certainly an aspie. And while aspies, with proper treatment, can overcome many of their limitations and go on to be very functional, successful people, they make terrible film/television critics.

It's only going to get worse thanks to places like reddit/4chan like Exp said. And with that gaming doc and the new design, there's going to be a huge influx of new and dumb. Nah, there's been a precedent for that, I'm pretty sure. When PSP and DS "homebrow" was still a thing people talked about, Mejilan and Stump vocally defended flashcarts (and, I think, downloading the roms instead of rippng them, because its faster and easier) and dowloading roms, provided you paid for the game. Stump wasn't a mod then, but I don't think it matters much. I think that's where the "don't accuse others of pirating for using emulators" rule comes from.

By the same token, nobody rips their own BIOS for emulators that require it. And I'm pretty sure many people who played Xenoblade on Dolhpin don't even own a Wii. MAME? Nobody bats an eye at that.

You just can't flat out admit that you download games you didn't pay for.

I agree that /v/ is shit, but I don't think it is GAF 2.0. There is way too much politically incorrect shit on /v/

I also think /VG/ is better than GAF. I think GAF is awful for game discussion, especially with the ultra PC slant the forum has.

The problem I have with /v/ is the amount of off-topic things and the lack of moderation (despite m00t putting mods in there) or the new mods are too heavy handed and delete /v/ related things while letting /b/ shit slide.

/vg/ is about the same in terms of GAF's "gaming community" side. With more /vg/ threads being nearly on the level of Halo-GAF than the rest of the community threads: They have frequent posters (even if they're anonymous) interacting with each others and a few trolls/drive-bys now and then. But the discourse isn't too much a step up from GAF.
