Yep, that was all it took to teach my cats not to scratch furniture. I got one scratch board made out of rope from a pet store and I also had a rough wooden plank they could use. Cats are pretty smart animals and as long as you show them how and where to scratch they will follow your lead.

Edit: One of them did destroy one of my dad's speakers before they learned how to use the scratch board.

I and my family have owned six cats, ten dogs, twelve horses, two geckos, two turtles, several rabbits, several rats, and a few exotic birds.  All have been extremely well taken care of and have lived long and happy lives, apart from one rabbit that my little brother accidentally dropped to its death.  We've also provided a temporary home for numerous animals while a permanent home could be found, to prevent them from being put down.  I'm not going to sit here and get preached to by some city slick who's only owned a fucking dog.

Further, though this is just my own personal anecdote and shouldn't be cited as my evidence that it's perfectly okay to do so, I must admit that the one cat (out of four that we have) that came to us already declawed is the friendliest, most playful cat that we have. So, it's hard for me to completely believe that it's the most inhumanely cruel thing you can do to a cat, even if I agree that it's pretty cruel just based on reading the description of what they do.

Half of the cats (all front declawed zomg) were indoor, the others did what they liked.  The dogs went in and out as they pleased, though a couple of them preferred to just stay in most of the time.  The horses were all outdoors of course, unless we count their barn as indoors, which did stink pretty bad like horse.  The geckos and turtles were indoors.  Geckos didn't smell, but the turtles reeked.  I'd never own a turtle again.  Rabbits, rats, and birds were indoors.

My family's house definitely has an odor of animal to it.  No amount of Febreeze can cover it up.  That said, we didn't have all those animals at once.  I think our maximum at one time was four cats, five dogs, six horses, two geckos, two rabbits, and one rat.  But yeah, even if you clean everything daily, there's still a smell.  It's a farm, though, so, what can you do?
