This generation turned out better than I thought, mostly due to indies.  I'm not a big indie gamer by any means but the first half of this generation was extremely stagnant.  The PS2 is still the king though, such a huge quantity of quality games.

1997-2005 was the best eight year span unlikely to be topped anytime soon.

This gen's been okay. Some really stand out titles but overall quality is sorely lacking compared to last gen.

I agree with this post.

eh i still prefer 16bit over the ps1 era. for me the snes was to the nes what the ps2 was to the ps1 - devs took all the crude concepts theyd tried out and refined them into classics, with graphics that didnt look like garbled shit, no less.

This gen will be remembered more for both how games branched out and started to become more than just games, and also how games narrowed up and became generic and boring and cookie cutter garbage.

My oculus rift will ship this month, i'm incredibly hyped for this. I had the chance to try it for 10 minute and goddamn, this could change everything. Last time I was impressed that much by tech was probably during the arcade days like the first time I saw Daytona USA

Gaming has never been better. Cheapest it's ever been, more games than you can ever play, even the 'shitty' games are made pretty well.

Gaming is like music. People get a nostalgia hard-on for whatever they played when they were 17-19 yrs old.

This gen had the best yearly franchises:

Assassins Creed, Bioshock, Call of Duty/Battlefield, Dead Space, Elder Scrolls/Fallout, Mass Effect.

And they were all multiplatform. There were some great experimental games like Mirrors Edge and LA Noire but probably a lot less than previous gens.

Oh please.

Honestly what saved this Gen for me was dd. Digital games are the best thing about this generation and where you will find more than 75% of its best games.

eh I was in my 20s for the previous gen and it offered way more than this gen

Yes, Steam has been great, but Steam itself is trans-generational. Things I have bought on steam haven't needed current tech or are even from recent times. If we're just arguing consoles, which adhere to generational cycles the most, then it's been a dropoff from last gen. I think that even the business side of things sees this last gen as a drop.

Basically, PS2 > PS3, GC > Wii, 360 > Xbox. Two out of three to last gen.

Don't ever listen to me about video games. I haven't paid full retail for a game in 10 years and haven't bought a new console since the PS2. I don't know dick about the past generation.

Aren't you the resident Call of Duty guy around here, or am I confusing you with someone else again?

The last shooter I played was BF2.

I could see how you could confuse Stoney and I. We like a lot of the same stuff and generally stay neutral on many subjects so we can shit on everyone.

Westaboo  :lol

Not much I can say on this gen versus the last given that the 360 is the first console I ever bought. I always used to play on PC exclusively, and I've pretty much gone back to that as the generation has progressed. I can't see myself buying one of them fancy new consoles any time soon either because of that.

I found Mad Men to be unbearable after the first season.  It's soap opera wank that finds itself further and further up its own ass.

I've started Mad Men like three times, but always give up somewhere in the first season. I don't really know why, I guess maybe not enough is going on? Then again, I loved Rubicon and that was much slower than Mad Men.

Don't get me wrong, Mad Men is very well put together.  However it is at its core a soap opera, even down to the "hidden secret past life" cliche.  I got to season four when my tolerance hit its limit.

I watched the entire series of Breaking Bad (minus the new episodes) within 2 weeks and it's pretty awesome.   :-[

I still haven't watched many other highly acclaimed series like The Sopranos and The Wire, but I'd put BB at the top of my list (granted I'm still on that euphoric high after watching something where everything is awesome and I haven't nitpicked things yet).

This is a fucking stupid post.

Nothing in Mad Men is soap opera-ish. It is just a drama about the lives of people living in 60s America.

I have a problem any time someone devolves a character driven show into "soap opera" because they don't like it even when it lacks the absurd plot twists, convenient characterization, emphasis on romance and wish fulfillment, and storytelling that define soaps.

I have no problem labeling Downton Abbey as a soap. But Mad Men? :what What's next, The Sopranos? This show has too much talking and interpersonal character relationships in its drama. Must be a soap opera! :beli
