tl;dr: Wife jerked me around, got my hopes up, and crushed them again. Men, beware.

So, things had been going pretty well for me. I had been seeing a therapist, and had more or less moved on, or at least had begun to. I've been hanging out with friends more, and even went out to the bars a couple of weekends ago.

And then last Tuesday my wife called, asking to come by the house to see the pets. I told her she could, and I would go get dinner or something while she was over, but something in her voice told me she wanted to talk. So, after class I went back home and met her. She was in tears, and told me she felt like she had just awoken from a nightmare, and she felt lost.

She said she wanted to try working things out, but was afraid that she would wake up some morning and feel like she did when she decided to leave, so she wanted to take it slowly and speak with a therapist before we made any major decisions.

We went out on a date that Saturday which was kind of awkward: here we were, husband and wife, with years of history, and neither of us knew exactly how to act or what to say. But it was good. Aside from the awkwardness, the conversation was easy and reminded me of better times. I ended up going over to her apartment the next night just to watch some TV and have dinner, and it felt more natural and comfortable.

Fast forward to Tuesday, she's sick and throwing up all day. I go over and spend the day and night with her at her place, and it felt good taking care of her. She took off work the next day and we spent the day at my house. I felt we were really making progress.

But then I started freaking out. I found birth control pills in her purse that morning, so I knew that the dude she was fucking wasn't using a condom. What if she was pregnant and this was morning sickness? I could forgive her for leaving me and seeing someone else, but could I forgive her if she had gotten pregnant? The idea of having to make the decision to end this second chance killed me. This led to a difficult conversation with her, and she was in tears when I drove her back to her apartment.

I got over it, though, and the next night we had dinner again. And again, the night ended in another difficult conversation. She admitted that she still felt no passion towards me. She didn't even want to hold my hand or kiss me, let alone have sex. That was the real reason she wanted to take things slowly. All that was left for me to do was try to understand her feelings and work with her.

She wanted to be alone by herself on Friday, but we had plans to have dinner and see a movie last night. We texted throughout the day when I was at work, and her texts became less frequent: sometimes she wouldn't respond for 15-30 minutes, sometimes over an hour. Something was up. Then she said she didn't want to see the movie, she said she didn't want to be out late and have to drive home too late. I pointed out that there was a theater 5 minutes from her apartment. No reply. Was she planning on seeing that dude after we had dinner? I have no idea.

I finally called her while still at work, and she dropped it on me: she didn't feel any different towards me and she didn't want to work it out, no marriage counseling, nothing. I called her again that night and told her I was asking her for the last time, and her answer was the same.

So that's where I'm at now. This time was a lot easier than the first, mainly due to the fact that I wasn't sure I could ever trust her again. I realize now that she wasn't really missing me, she was missing our pets, our house, her comfort zone, and how I treated her. I suppose the worst part, is that even after all of this, if she called me today I don't know if I could tell her no, as much as I want to.

I don't really know what the point of this thread is. Maybe catharsis, maybe throwing myself a pity party, or maybe just a cautionary tale for anyone who finds themselves in a similar position.

You know... I read that expecting to be shaking my head in judgement or something, but I just feel terribly sad for him. I imagine you think of things as pretty solid when you marry someone. At least, you should. To have that dissolve and regress to some kind of bizarre adolescent relationship where you're basically living on hope while she questions the relationship and fucks other people... I can't imagine that's nice. Yeah, he should be a little wiser and move on as fast as possible but that's easier said than done I guess. The mind can be like a drunken gaping arsehole. The whole experience is probably gonna cause him issues and take a long time to get over... I feel a bit shitty reading the posts there that are aggressively putting him down or mocking him. Its probably not what he needs.

The problem is that he put this shit out there to the world.  I wouldn't mock the guy, but putting that shit on the internet is guaranteeing that someone will.  I'm with you though.  I feel bad for him.  He obviously has some other issues though.  No one with a healthy mental state would put up with that and then still say that he doesn't think he would tell her no if she did it again.
