Nintendo going third party would doom the entire industry, without them out there setting new gameplay paradigms where is the mass of soulless factory produced schlock that's on the Xbone and iPhone and so on going to find their ideas to rip off? Where are they going to discover new technologies that reinvent how we interact with media?

I don't see whats wrong with nintendo downsizing. They already sell consoles for a profit unlike Sony and MS like to so they are always pretty profitable.

Nintendo pretty much cut and run with the Gamecube after holiday 2003.  Nintendo's strategy in the past to get them out of shit was to keep pumping out Mario games.  We're getting to the point where pumping out those Mario games isn't enough and that is when Nintendo is finished.

With third party software sales being so horrible on Wii U I can't imagine they're collecting much in terms of royalties either.

The only thing is I don't see where they go from here. Aside from the Wii blip it's been a steady decline for 25+ years.

That's why I said home console software. They've never done poorly in the handheld market. I can see the argument that going third party for consoles can lead people to believe it's only a matter of time for their handheld software to follow that path, but at the same time there's always new kids being born who aren't going to be given a phone or a tablet.
