I'm mostly disturbed by various communities that strive to isolate themselves from the real world and pride themselves on borderline pedophiliac behavior, and those that not only defend but foster these atrocious attitudes.

Buzzfeed, Upworthy, etc publishing only positive and uplifting material reflects more on their catering toward middle aged women on Facebook than anything else. It has been a very openly discussed marketing strategy. Middle aged women share the most articles on social media and middle aged women read predominately "Ten things that will reaffirm your faith in humanity!" type stuff. And that market is far from the market that is necessary to creating "culture" or has any type of artistic influence.

So no, dude is grasping at straws. It's a dumb, misinformed opinion based on the idea that "Millennials can't take criticism". Which I tend to think comes from the fact that we took away Gen X and priors ability to say taco and distinguished black fellow without being shit on in public. Sorry guys, that was totally us. Feel free to go down swinging.

Speaking of which, you can't really equate the huge group of millennials with gawker and its similar avenues figuring out the best way to generate hits from the otherside of the Fox News spectrum is to be as sensationalist and reactionary as possible, which includes throwing around "sexist" and "racist" since it's great click bait.

Of course it has some "kids get off my lawn, back in my day we were awesome" qualities to it and I certainly see no reason to limit it to any made-up generation. But I've had too many instances on the internet and off where people mistake disagreement for some kind of personal criticism or vendetta and as touched upon here recently where "argument" is frowned upon and only considered negative. Instead people say they just want to have a "discussion" or "conversation" where everyone agrees with and reinforces each other.

It's a mentality that winds up becoming its own more tribal and divisive ouroboros because no disagreement is allowed internally.

Depends. I see plenty of conversations that never actually get to a difference of "educated" opinion though. On the internet it's quite often stuck at lowest common denominator horseshit, at least about social issues, because someone wants to play the willful fool. It's not so much "everyone has to agree on this subject" it's "can we all agree on reality?"

Gawker and the sites Gawker Media owns are clickbait junk.  In fact, they don't even really bother trying to hide it.  It works if GAF is any indicator.  Now other sites are trying to imitate it because all they care about are the hits/clicks.  It has set an unfortunate precedent but only if you're dumb enough to take those sites seriously.

Also I should give an example. You'll have an event that most people agree is x and yet there will be plenty of self-appointed devil's advocates to protest the idea of it being x, being as pedantic as possible, teasing out minor details and ignoring every other instance of x just so they can proclaim this one as "coincidental."

If we all can't see a thing and agree what happened, agree there is a problem, we can't even get to the disagreement on how to deal with said problem.

Why does someone born in 1985 share the same generational label as someone born in 1995? Someone born in 1985 remembers what it was like to not have the internet and cell phones, and when we remembered - by heart - every phone number for every important person we knew. These seem like small things, but they're fucking huge.

It still makes no sense. It goes from early 1980's to early 2000's? That means that my 16 year old cousin is in the same generation as me? It's not that I care about the label, it just makes no logical sense.

Because Comte needed it to fit his model and Mannheim didn't want to start over.

I don't really care about it, I just find it interesting how generations are defined. They're so blanket that it's hilarious.

As for Metroid, I stick by what I said: there are only three Metroid games worth playing more than once. :yeshrug I don't see how that's a controversial opinion.

They have to be, the entire goal is to reduce the amount of data to make analysis easier. (And possible.) If you question the premise too much you're going to make the whole thing fall apart and then what are we going to do?!?
