Having played a couple hours of Ghosts when it had a free weekend on Steam it's obvious that formula got stale. They couldn't have rocked that boat hard enough even if they had stayed.

I do feel there was some weird negativity towards the Gamecube from the juvenile gaming press. The hardware was good and the gaming lineup was good. The press kept wondering if Mario needed guns instead of whether the games were of quality or not. Of course, Nintendo responded by saying "ok u guys are fegs, lets target other demos" and then took that approach straight to the bank.

The Wii U however was just a fucking dumb idea considering the market at the time.

People have hated Nintendo since before I was born. The fact that they still do now is hardly newsworthy. Personally, I think the gaming community in general is partially to blame for Nintendo's lack of success. Now before someone says "You are blaming the customers for the company's failure? You're stupid!" let me explain.

From what I've seen, these days Nintendo is just all around disliked by many MANY publishers, journalists, etc. Now part of this disdain is justified, but much of it is because Nintendo does not act like Sony. Now the PS3 and PS4's success has relied on these third party games, and as such, they are willing to do anything to appease them. Its why companies like EA or Ubisoft or Activision like these consoles- they can demand whatever they want and pretty much get it. Now Nintendo has a large lineup of popular 1st party games that help keep the consoles alive, so appeasing third parties is not as much a priority. For example, when Ubisoft comes up and says to Sony "We need this console to support this", then Sony better sure as hell make sure they support it. On the other hand, when Ubisoft goes to Nintendo and says "We need this console to support this", Nintendo can say no and not have their system sell less than 500K.

At the end of the day, its all about power. All the major third party publishers have power over Sony and they know it. They can make whatever demands they want and they will likely be met. On the other hand, these same publishers have a fraction of the power they have over Nintendo, and this infuriates them. The fact that Nintendo hardware also requires doing something with the peripherals further strains the relationships. The fact that most of these major publishers essentially have a MASSIVE influence in the industry gives the impression that if these publishers hate Nintendo, then ALL publishers must hate Nintendo.

It doesn't matter that dev kits for the Wii U are basically free, which makes them unique among the major console devs- "The Wii U is awful"

While I will admit to having a strong disdain for Sony in the same way I have a strong disdain for Bin Laden, I will say they have far more influence in the "hardcore" niche than Nintendo does, and as long as it stays that way, everyone will continue to hate Nintendo. I cannot count the number of times that I have seen people predicting the doom of Nintendo, and I have yet to see it happen. Are they in trouble this gen? I'd say yes. Is the Wii U a bust? Unfortunately yes, although I blame that almost entirely on marketing. Is Nintendo going under because of it? No, and its absolutely ridiculous to think that the Wii U's failure is indicative of the company as a whole outright failing.

Xbox one is a system that gathered a lot of early adopters (close to PS4) but didn't keep the interest high. That makes me wonder (I know I am not alone) if many early adopters got one only because the PS4 was sold out.

If so, most of them would probably have played enough of Forza, Ryse and Dead Rising 3 by now and will maybe have played enough of Titanfall soon. Titanfall (as a supposed system seller) might have even been the main reason many got their Xbox one and those might look at the PS4 again, now that it is available more often.

If I was one of those people now (or rather in a month or two) would be the time to sell my Xbox one and get a PS4 (I actually got an xbox for Halo and sold it once I played through the boring SP, but it is of course different with a MP game). Any NeoGAF members who will get rid of their xbone once they have enough of Titanfall? Can this really become a "system seller" in a negative way?

I feel like so much of the hype surrounding Titanfall is artificial. At the end of the day it's the new shooter, but with surprisingly less features than shooters that already exist. This image says a lot of things:



It says that even with Microsoft and Twitch giving away free Xbox One merchandise to Xbox One streamers and viewers, Titanfall--a multiplayer game!--is still only slightly more popular than Dark Souls, a niche game that most mainstream gamers are unaware of.

I don't think the release of Titanfall will significantly impact gaming in any way, though Microsoft certainly wanted it to.

If Titanfall's mechs were more inspired and vital to the game, it would have seen a more interesting launch. There has never been a popular mainstream mech-themed game before, and with the release of Titanfall there still hasn't been.
