4.0 out of 5 stars Freezing, Kill, Words, Pages, there's not much more a book can be! December 24, 2013
By John Turner
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not sure if the author is a doctor of some kind, but I suspect he very likely is, as his knowledge of freezing and killing is unrivaled by anyone else in the book or, in my approximation, outside of it.

The plot is simple on paper - a guy named Sam (possibly short for Samuel - the author leaves this unknown so the reader has to use their imagination) gains the ability to freeze time, and does so. More than just that, though, this book offers DOUBLE the things for the price of only one - not only does he FREEZE, he KILLS. What follows is a complex Lovecraftian tale of freezing and killing, eventually culminating in the freezing and killing of the statue of liberty (although most readers won't pick up on this, as the in-book description has almost nothing to do with it, such subtext, very deep, wow), and eventually loops right around to hit you in your MIND. That's right - it goes there, it raises the question, what would YOU do if YOU could freeze and kill things? I would probably freeze and kill things, personally, but I hope you are of a finer moral fabric than Sam(uel?) and I.

Unfortunately, I do have to deduct a star. The book is bizarrely slanted more towards freezing than killing, and I think there's a lot of wasted potential there. Additionally, I'm not sure why Sam doesn't have a pet frog. I'm not why that wasn't a subplot, as frogs symbolize time and the afterline in Sam(uel?)'s cultural background. Still, I look forward to Dr. K-Burg's next title on either or killing, perhaps with a bit more focus toward the latter.

et me start by saying that this topic is offspring of today's new controversy. People have been bashing reviewers today and honestly, its not their fault. The practice today is to write a detailed review and then provide a numbered score at the end.

The question is, how can you quantify something that is subjective?

:rofl

"today's new controversy" would be solved forever by a mass permabanning of anyone who's ever donned an avatar for a game that they haven't even played yet.

>_>
Yes it has a job system and even a system where basically characters can have two active jobs. This actually ties pretty nicely into it's battle system where you can stack turns and mix and match abilities for a kind of combo. Say a monk has an ability that powers up physical moves and then the knight has  a strong physical attack. Well you have your character draw from both job's ability sets and in battle you "brave" (take early and stack your turn based moves) your moves and use those two together.

Is it a FF game? I guess, but I'm one of those people who rather have things stand on thier own. Like Lost Odyssey for many was a FF game and well to me it did'nt say FF in the title and so I just rather see it as it's own series. BD is clearly more of a callback and has more in common with FF, plus it started as one I think. Either way it is its own series now so I just see it as that, though I guess if you like FF you'll like this game. Then again I don't think FF and jrpgs have been bad at all recently, so that dosen't factor in my rush to cal BD a "true FF" game. Plus I like FF for it's high production values, unique worlds, and cinematic stylings. Things that come post FFVI basically. BD really has none of that.

You don't understand the problem. These reviewers are wrong and they are trying to force their views on the rest of us. Who gave them this power? Who are they to decide what me and my kids think about the real value and meaning of Infamous: Second Son?

Teach the controversy.

BD:FF pretty much grabs FF5's job system wholesale and gives it minor tweaks.
I'm way more curious now.  Need to look into this.

The demo starts out a little harder than the actual game... the full game eases you into things much more.

Was absolutely loving BD up until a certain chapter. Anybody who's played the game to that point knows what I'm talking about. Just seems so lazy and halfassed. I'm still pressing on (currently finishing up chapter 6 and hope to beat it this weekend) but that soured my opinion on the game quite a bit.

Anyways, while talking about RPGs check out this gem I found in the DQ community thread:

It has a lot of elements of older FF. But it's still not FF and it has a lot of unique things that make it clearly distinct from FF. The main things that make it similar to FF are the job names, abilities, and item names. The structure, battle system, and quest system are notably not particularly FF-ish. I think peoples comparisons of FF to BD kind of tarnish BD's name a bit, if you catch my meaning. It's a perfectly unique and great game in its own right. But no, it's not the Final Fantasy that people think it is. Basically, I want certain things from FF that I don't get with BD. BD is great, but it's not FF. I get and like completely different things between BD and FF.

yet strangely, I get things with BD:FF that I want from FF, which I can't say for FF8, FF10, and FF12.  FF is clearly different things to different people, and while I'm happy Square let BD:FF exist as a separate IP, I don't think people would find it out of place at all if they *had* named the follow-up to Final Fantasy Gaiden: 4WoL as Bravely Default: Final Fantasy instead of Flying Faerie.

To me, BD feels like an FF game from the alternate universe where Kitase didn't come in and completely change the series into something unrecognizable.  Plus, as you partially point out, it has FF jobs/job system, FF items, FF spells and naming conventions, airships, some FF enemies, and hell, even a ton of the music is deliberately riffing on classic Uematsu FF songs.  If anyone other than SE published BD:FF as it is, they'd be sued into oblivion.

Makes sense. I get the exploration and jobs and airships in BD, which is why I love it. It is like FF without the baggage. It also helps that FFV and X-2 are my third and fourth favorite FF's respectively, so I feel at home with the job system. I think I worded that wrong because I get out of FFV what I want out of other FFs like FFVIII and XII, and by extension, BD. I'm being completely illogical here. I guess I'm just annoyed that a game not developed by SE not titled Final Fantasy gets FF more than actual recent FFs.

Yeah, but I don't wanna have all my guys dead/poisoned in the first battle. Even SMTIV wasn't that unforgiving.

The bi-sexual thing is hilarious.  Gays get mad and say bi-sexual (men) are simply gay, and straights say bi-sexual (men) are simply gay.  Who cares if someone just to fuck no matter the gender.

It always weirds me out when people I associate with who aren't heterosexual rip on bisexual people, especially when they're transgender and have to put up with baloney like TERFs or LGBT groups that claim to represent every letter in the acronym but really don't.

And you think I don't? Who do you think YOU are thinking you know more about it than me? At least I'm honest about my shortcomings which most of you are not.

I find romantic relationships with women to be better than men. Well I find dating with women better to be better than men, I enjoy spending time with straight women than me. I still don't consider myself bi and will never be. It's sad that you weren't comfortable with your sexuality that other aren't or haven't done much introspection. Hell I get chronic panic attacks from too much introspection.

Some of the others here have terribly inflated egos that should be popped. It's not because you believe that there's a LGBT community with rainbows and unicorns that it works that way in real life.

What the fuck was good about FF12? I can't think of a single outstanding quality. I guess it was better than Xenosaga?
The world.
Parts of the story.
The writing quality.
The battle system-which is really just the ATB on the field-
The art design.
Gambits and how they cut out some of the tedious elements of jrpgs.
The open zones.
The graphics-some of the best on the PS2 and have aged well-

It was just a good game. Then again, I don't think FF sucks now or then.

idk fellas I try to stay out of conversations regarding legal charges unless I know the particulars of why someone was sent away. You can catch some fucked up offenses that go way beyond what you did.

oth dudes in that thread are way too casual about a parent just accepting a sex offender into the community. Same dudes who would cry themselves to bed in rage if their crush dated someone who served for like, battery or attempted robbery. It is pretty transparent.
