I probably listen to autechre more often, and I generally feel they are more risk-taking and more 'interesting', but let's look at the discog here:

what can you even say about that autechre's LPs, save probably tri repetae++, amber, and confield, are pretty hit or miss for me.

autechre's eps are usually pretty neat in that you get an interesting preview/review of an idea without the multiple 7 minute tracks of sometimes excess noodling that kind of numbs the exercise. see ep7 > lp5 for a good example.

I also think one of aphex's strengths is that his style markers are present in just about everything he does, regardless if it's drill/drum n bass, club techno, acid, ambient shit, and so on.

oh I don't mean personal expression as in happy/sad/etc. take his use of vocal (and weird) sampling, and listen to we are the music makers, fantasia (nsfw), come on you slags, beetles, and so on. fairly different musically, but there's a pretty clear line connecting them.

by contrast I don't get the impression autechre cares particularly about sounding autechre exploring music, so much as they sound like technology-producing-autechre-like-sounds. oval had this identity crisis recently with mixed results (o and Oh), and kinda returned to form with ovaldna.

At the risk of just appearing to be salty with this very post, I don't think I have any incriminating posts in the current thread that make me look like someone desperate for appreciation. Out of six posts, one was a self-deprecating reply, one was a reply to Esch (those don't count for real conversation), one was a tongue-in-cheek reply to being told I'm verbose, and 3 are just dry answers to questions about protocol. That era of guys were pushing the same boundaries and coming to different conclusions, and it's really hard to group them together without using IDM as a makeshift genre. It does make sense to compare Autechre, Aphex Twin, and Squarepusher despite the fact that they ended up going in wildly different directions at times. Perfect sense. It would also make sense to throw Fennesz in there, someone who ended up even further away from any of them. And the only way to do it is underneath that awful phrase.

Daft Punk is super overrated (great, nostalgic, and Homework was dope as hell, but still overrated), Massive Attack is super overrated, and Portishead....well Portishead is just great, I dunno what the fuck Esch is on about that. Third is probably my favorite album of all time. How can a man love atmosphere in his records and not be in love with Third? You're basically trapped in a sonic-emotional minefield for an hour and a half.

Boards of Canada is considered IDM. Just has me like There's nothing "intelligent" about Boards. They just make beautiful music.

And I think that Daft Punk have earned their accolades. I don't like Massive Attack. Portishead is good.
