Yeah man, communication is going to shit because of bloody emoticons. Why do kids talk in straight acrnonyms now? The English language has been butchered. I take solace in my middle age crisis.
I said a sign of communication going to shit, as in a product of poor communication. Not a reason or a cause. They represent emotional reactions. You can see them as representing a trend favoring charged reactionary responses instead of informative or rational respones. They can represent the subsequent mocking of emotional responses. From there, you have the post-ironic attack upon sincerity and emotion, and the post-ironic's self-serving attitude of still not offering any alternative to what it attacks because it'd rather just mock a reaction than partake in conversation.
(Yeah, I'll keep hammering on post-irony.)
