Also factor in a second person that would be earning 30% more then me.

Do you know what borough you're moving to, whether you'll need a car, do you smoke cigarettes? I've never even been to the east coast but these are general things that make a big difference.

i mean if you're working in the area you'll be making proportionally the right amount to theoretically support yourself.

If you're okay with living in a small one bedroom apartment in the less ritzy parts of Brooklyn, Queens or in Harlem than you live comfortably if you make at least 5K a month.

Guess it depends on what you do...

but I'm always amazed when I see what people are getting for places more expensive than mine in chicago and in far worse neighborhoods. Its much bigger and art/music wise it's much more influential but I think I would've gotten sick of city life several times faster in NYC.

when i first moved here I was making 35k and I was able to survive with a roommate. Now I make more than that and am able to survive quite comfortably for the most part (still with a roommate technically, but you'd be in the same situation)

food here can be kind of expensive if you eat out a lot; breakfasts can be up to 10, while lunch will tend to be 10-15 and dinner around the same price
once a month you'll need to figure in your transportation, the easiest thing, i've found is just buying a monthly unlimited metro card which unfortunately seems to go up every year. When I moved here it was $84 a month for unlimited bus / train service but now it's $112.
there is a LOT of free shit to do in NYC so you can do a ton of stuff even if you're broke.

What about rents? If i would get a job it would be in lower manhattan just across from holland tunnel or something. So i guess jersey city should be doable.

Chances of me getting this job are small, but it would be a dream come true to move to nyc for a few years.

rents are unfortunately insane

we lucked the fuck out and are paying 2k a month for a large two bedroom in Brooklyn

if you got a job in jersey you'd be at the mercy of their transportation system which then adds additional cost to your train needs. i don't take it, so i'm not familiar with it at all.

i honestly don't know how helpful i'd be with neighborhood suggestions, you may want to talk to someone who has lived here longer

if you are going to work in lower manhattan you should check out Staten Island. 25 minute ferry ride gets you in to the city and drops you off right around where you will be working. Should actually be quicker than living in Jersey. The only downside would be that you are living on Staten Island.

Astoria is a pretty nice area that's not overly expensive (at least, last I checked). Pretty happening place, seems a bit more "young professional" than the hipster parts of Brooklyn and a bit more affordable. My friend has a modestly sized 1 bedroom for ~$1000/month.

I love NYC but don't want to rent, so living there wasn't ever an option for me

I tried to move to New York once $:-\$

I got a scholarship to law school and was even hired for an entry level job at the DA's office before moving. I was going to work full time and go to school part time. I was all set but in the end it just seemed too expensive with a kid so I backed out and ended up moving to the midwest :'(

Oh well, looking at employment numbers for graduating law students makes it seem like I turned out okay
