I'm actually dicking around on muradin now. There were good deals on expansions for Xmas and I'm only now getting a bit of time to play. Haven't played since LK launch. Name is Akala on muradin, should be on a bit for the next month or so.

It's interesting the price is the same. With todays inflation and digital pricing model I'd expect the sub to be higher. Or is there ultra premium sub with free helmet every week for 27.99?

Introducing you to dungeons is poor but raiding is easier than ever now with LFR.

Raidings fun if you do it with buddies or have a clear purpose/goal. I kinda miss it. It's fun contributing to at eam.

Private servers are better for this (edit: well, I guess that's not true if you want to play as a panda or whatever). I'd gladly pay a monthly subscription for a legit Blizzard-supported pre-expansion server.

I just did my weekly ten 2v2 games on the TBC server I play.

I've found that WoW gets really boring after level 50 or so. Amazing till level 25, not so amazing 25-40 and just straight up boring thereafter.

I've also only once done a raid: American beta back in 2004. Never done a dungeon raid though, I have no idea what it's like, and WoW does an absolute shit job of introducing you to it. Actually, the introduction to dungeons is also very poor.

It's funny how WoW does certain things really bad but no other MMO has ever topped it. It's quite embarrassing, actually.
:lol

If you haven't raided you're in no position to say the game sucks after lv50. With respect to "introducing" people to raids...heroics do that for you. Basically if you know not to stand in bad stuff, you can raid in 2011-2013 WoW. At its best few things are more fun than a truly challenging raid with a good no-drama group of players.

In terms of preparing for raids...smh. I'm a tank, I had to study every fight before entering a raid. But I'd imagine it doesn't matter with DPS; someone can explain that shit to you during the raid.

Deadmines teaches you nearly everything you need to know, it really is a great intro to sell the group dynamic. But for me the first truly amazing group moment was an ogre killing quest in Loch Modan/Thesalmar. I didn't know about tanking at the time iirc so we were just killing shit.

Then there was Gnomer, which felt like a raid in vanilla. I remember spending a couple hours in there on an epic run full of fail and excitement. Tanking as a prof warrior wasn't easy. I wasn't great but honed my skill enough so people re-invited me to groups all the time. Iirc my biggest struggle was in some of the TBC dungeons initially. I remember wasting like 3 hours of Etiolet's day in Mana Tombs lol

Which brings me to a major reason WoW lost its appeal to me. I like how quick LFG makes things but it killed server identities in a sense. I read trade/general/LFG chats in vanilla/TBC/LK because groups were always forming. Or a healer friend might sign on and you'd immediately send a whisper; better yet I'd log on and get whispers begging for me to tank something. You quickly got a sense of who was good, who to avoid, etc and it eventually led to joining the big boys in raids. Now it feels like servers are just irrelevant hubs for LFG/LFR searches. I miss feeling like the server was constantly progressing.

I still think you need a proper LFG tool in game. It's aim is the same as spamming LFG in chat. The problem is that Blizzard eventually refined LFD into something so entirely automated that there wasn't much of a reason to talk to each other. They also reduced dungeon difficulty just to make LFD work.

Exactly. On one hand I recognize a return to manual LFG wouldn't work today, especially for smaller servers where a lv74 player might never find four folks to do a dungeon after 10PM PST. On the other I would love to see an introduction of more incentives for people to play together on their server.

When I last played you could do enough heroics (and raids) a week to get about what, 1000 Justice Points? There was a time when the JP amount was much lower and you mainly got them through a daily dungeon; I remember getting on around 2AM every night to see what the new daily was, then doing it quickly with friends (assuming it wasn't Occulus because fuck that place at 2AM). I'd love to see a return to something like that. Maybe instead of 1000 weekly JPs from pure LFG you would get 600 from LFG and 400 from doing dungeons with groups from your server; and of course scale the difficulty based on gear level to a degree. That would definitely bring life back to many servers.

And give free server transfers if someone from a full server joined a small to even things out.

Holy shit man, level 50 takes what, 10 hours now?

The quality of whatever you're doing 25-40 vastly changes depending on what zone you are in. Some zones were completely overhauled with Cataclysm, some were almost left untouched. Considering that you haven't needed to cross continents to go 1-60 since 2005, you have a lot of options.

Private servers are better for this (edit: well, I guess that's not true if you want to play as a panda or whatever). I'd gladly pay a monthly subscription for a legit Blizzard-supported pre-expansion server.

Yes, and no. Most people want 10x experience or instant 60/70/80. I can understand 2x weekends for Vanilla, that's a much more tedious grind than you'd likely remember, but the customized progression bypass shit irritates the fuck out of me. I want to play Vanilla and BC because I want to play Vanilla and BC, not some modern instant gratification version of Vanilla and BC.

Blizzard's stance on official time-locked servers is more than a little irritating.

Server emulation via MaNGOS, etc.

You download whatever version of WoW you need, register on the server's site, edit realmlist.wtf, and off you go. Most should be free, the more popular ones are usually the instant gratification types. I've never seen a Blizzlike rate server get above 350 or so population.

Varies. Private Servers have only really reached a point where they were even playable in the last year and a half or so (mostly thanks to the work done by the mangos team).

Most have MC and ZG, some have BWL, less have AQ and Naxx. Content has to be released alongside server progression. There's too many itemization issues in MC and ZG (and to a lesser degree BWL) to open up AQ20 for instance.

The best (i.e. most populated and well-scripted) private "Blizzlike" vanilla and BC servers I've found are the level 60 Warsong and level 70 Archangel servers run by the people at wow-one.com. By default the XP gain rates are 12x and 14x, respectively, but you can change your rate to 1x from the account panel on the site. I think that they ask for you to vote for them on one of those sever ranking sites but it takes like 10 seconds. Yes, it's free to play.

On the 60 server, ZG, AQ20, MC, Ony, BWL, AQ40, and the 5-man dungeons are all fully scripted. There are only three bosses in Naxx still not available. The server population peaks at ~3000 players daily. There are slightly more players on Horde.

The 70 server isn't quite as far along but still has all of Kara (minus chess event), all 5-mans and heroics, all of TK, and 5/7 SSC bosses. Arena is in S2 right now. Server pop hits ~2200-2500 players daily, and like Warsong, there are more Horde players.

They do have another new-ish 60 server that is 1x by default, Emerald Dream, but there isn't nearly as much content available, the population peaks at ~1000 or less, and development seems to have slowed down there.

As for how "Blizzlike" it truly is, I was one of those elitist jerk hardcore no-lifer feggets back in retail vanilla and BC, and I have no real complaints as far as how true to the experience the servers are. You can find videos of boss kills and PvP videos from these servers all over YouTube if you want to see for yourself.

Here and there you'll come across some minor bugs but nothing game-breaking. The bugs that bother me the most are the bugs that affect PvP. I do remember a handful (like 5 or less) of broken quests when I leveled on the 70 server last year but they are constantly fixing stuff. You can check out their bug trackers for both the 60 server and the 70 server if you're really curious.

I hear Molten WoW also has a nice, high-pop WotLK server too but that's about when WoW went to shit for me.

Anyway, I've been playing on these servers for like two years, so let me know if you guys are curious about anything

I know about Feenix, it's been the population king for a while now (even if it's more buggy than a number of other, less populated servers).

There are clear differences in an optional 1x server seeing as 99% of the population will go with whatever option gets them to the cap fastest: no one bothers with low level dungeons, few bother with professions, there's very little available on the AH below BRD level gear, the community certainly takes a hit, overall path of least resistance mentality, etc. I'm not saying that it's better to go to a server with a 1/10th of the population of Feenix as there are obvious disadvantages, but having to pick between the two is shitty.

Emerald Dream is a step in the right direction. I know of lot of Rebirth and Scriptcraft refugees fled there. Rebirth was the most fun I've had playing a Vanilla server, but I'm done rerolling over server/guild drama.

Is it just a bunch of lv60 players continuously running end game content, or is there a decent amount of people progressing 1-60/70? Sounds interesting but it could also be quite clique-y

It's definitely true that there isn't much 5-man action at the lower levels. I couldn't get groups for anything but SM or ZF before 60 when I did a 1x character on Warsong. There are 1x leveling guilds and such on both factions but I've never tried those.

I heard good things about Scriptcraft. I wasn't entirely sold on Emerald Dream mostly because the TBC server has really blown up since the new core and it seems like they're either stretching themselves too thin or just don't consider ED a top priority. I haven't played there in months, though.

1x is a lot more 1-60 than end game usually. You'll be surprised how slow 1x is.

14x / instant is just 60s running around doing raids and PvP.
