Anyone hear shave with a straight edge razor?
« on: March 17, 2013, 01:00:22 AM »
I hate the electric stuff but I'm not enamored with the 3-5 blade disposable things. I am considering going old school. Anyone do this already?

How often do you need to sharpen these things?

I sharpen mine ever few weeks. I'm still getting the hang of it, but the baby smooth butter face I get from it is worth the pain of mistakes. I use a leather stone before each swipe. It gets everything off the blade so it's just one long clean cut.

I should mention I've only been using mine since V-day, cause that's when it was gifted to me. So I too am new to this stuff, prepare to bleed!

Yeah, when I do shave I use a safety razor.  The blades are cheap, the shave is good, and the look is classy.  I've always been terrified of trying to do my own straight-razor shave.

There is a barber I know of about 45 minutes away that will still give you a straight razor shave, and I've thought about going to him and seeing how I like it.  Maybe after that, I'll consider it.

Been using one since Christmas. As someone who has always been prone to in-grown hairs from time to time, my skin is ever so lovely. Will never go back. Also, any manscaping or guybrow work you usually do becomes a delight in cosmotology instead of a chore.

I don't trust myself enough to do this myself.  If I go to a barbershop, I have THEM do it.

I don't use plastic disposable, I use the three blade things (for years), and I don't like them. Maybe safety razor is the secret

I've had a straight done before and it's unnecessary. Safety is cheap as hell, leaves your skin like :wow and generally feels amazing. No need to move on.

Keep in mind that your razor, blade, and soap all come together to make the shave. I'm using feathers right now cus i bought a ton of em in bulk, but I've had arguably better shaves from 'inferior' brands like derby and wilkinson. They are sharp as fuck though. Only need 1 real pass to ice an entire beard.

Yeah I used to roll with merkur blades but I got 100 derby blades for $10 on amazon shipped. Hard to beat.

Olden times razing is for those with too much free time.

Talking of that, what about Patrick Klepeks sweet tache and beard. It makes him look like a children's entertainment magician.

I've got my grandpa's old safety razor from the 70's. thing is still in great shape. Just use it for trimming due to the beard, though.

one of the guys behind Warby Parker has started a shaving company with the same principals of good design and reasonable prices.  I've been kind of annoyed at my razor and the cost of my blades so i picked up one of their "starter" sets.

art of shaving stuff is great, probably overpriced though. I lucked out in that my dope father in law got me a cool set for my birthday a couple years ago (badger brush, stand, etc) from them along with a nice merkur blade from their store in seattle. Came with a coupon for about 20% off a web order, so I got 3-4 tubs of the stuff, and just ran out a couple months ago. I'm definitely willing to try other stuff out there, it's just a super low priority because the nicer shaving creams last goddamn forever, so by the time I get to the point of replacing I forget heh. I will say I have tried some cheaper stuff from bath body works etc and it just isn't the same.

Definitely get a brush. Aside from working really well, you feel like a baller every time you shave. I also want to get a proper horn comb too.

speaking of tweezerman, I have their tweezers and nail clippers, a definite step up from cheap revlon/whatever.

We should turn this into a male primping thread.  :-*

being the brandwhore that I am, just some fragrance-free balm from art of shaving haha. I rarely use it, since I usually shave post-shower so my skin is all smoove and pretty regardless. I should also note that pretty much everything I put on my body has no smell at all. I kinda want to dip into cologne for those special occasions but eeeehhh I don't know...

and yeah, I regret not going DE razor a lot sooner. Paying $50 or more for a razor is a bit of a turn off at first but it has more than paid for itself already.

I've been meaning to switch to safety razors for a while now.  The five blade one I use gives one or two decent shaves before it gets dull and awful.  Main issue is that safety razor shaving is a process and not something you can lazily do in the shower.

The thing is, once you get used to it, it's really not too much of a time sink versus conventional shaving.  Not only that, but you get a better shave that just looks and feels better.

I don't really have any shampoo recs, I just use whatever my wife has around which is usually some bumble & bumble shit or whatnot. I have noticed that they tend to feel nicer than the cheaper stuff, but whether or not that is worth it considering my hair is pretty short and I have a greasy head (even before I slather it in grooming cream), I don't know. I've used Aussie and been ok.

I've always thought about shaving my bits with a DE but pussed out every time haha. I just use  2 blade bic.

alright, i'll give it a shot. I've been shaving for close to 3 decades but never tried this.

Aside - I started shaving when I was 12, and would get told off by the teachers when I let it go for a few days because I basically had a full beard. Which weren't allowed for students apparently. No other boy in school - never mind my year, the whole school - could manage a beard so I was the object of some amazement for a while there

I saw a 6 bladed razor in a store today.  Enough is enough.

I think I'm set on a razor.  All I remember about brushes is to go for a boar one.  Then a bowl and some soap?

or was it another animal...

a boar brush might be a little rough on the face... badger brush, nice soap cream, aftershave lotion. I messed around with the 'pre shave oil' some places sell for a bit, and eh, didn't really do anything for me personally.

I'll probably go with badger.  Almost everything shaving related I have now has 'sensitive' on it.  Neutrogena sensitive skin shaving cream and nivea sensitive after shave balm.

I don't have a badger brush yet.  I'm still using one I bought at a department store a few years back.  My razor is an old Gillette from the 1950's that was passed to me from my father-in-law.  I restored it and it works amazingly!  I've got my shave soap in an old coffee mug.

My setup is simple, cheap, and effective.

You get a bit faster with practice, but frothing up the foam is still a pain in the ass. Look into shaving oils if you get tired of it. More than good enough for stubble.

Omega makes some really great boar brushes if any of you are looking.  I have used boar and badger brushes since I started shaving forever ago and actually prefer boar.  Only problem with a new badger brush is the smell.

Has anybody ever seen the documentary Shave It Baby Shave It? It's about a couples where the woman gets satisfaction off of shaving her partner's regular and nether regions with a straight razor. I do have to admit the thought of having a straight razor near the backdoor does sound kind of erotic.
