Etrian Odyssey 1 remake on 3DS - magus found crying :uguu
« on: March 26, 2013, 08:37:04 AM »
Okay, way more information (and some scans) have started popping up. This is... really... odd. Definitely a new direction for EO. The graphics and presentation looks the same, pretty much like EO4, except it no longer looks like a "create your own party from the start and just explore" dungeon crawler. Instead there's a main character who you can name (he is voiced in story scenes), and there's a full story where you meet other characters, and they join your party like a story RPG. All the characters appear to be voiced.

The storyline is based on EO1, but there are a ton of changes. The story starts with the main character running into a mysterious girl. The main character is a young man from the Highlands, doing some job for the guild office in Etria, and the girl he runs into is Frederica Irving, who appears to have lost her memory. Her character design has her holding a gun too.

So yeah, an EO1 remake with named characters, voice acting, and more focus on plot. Did anyone really ask for this? It's... somewhat interesting though I must say. It also means you no longer create classes for your party too, since all the party members are actual characters who have their own fixed classes. Hmm...

What exactly sounds bad? It sounds like any other EO, just more focused. You can still change classes (only on main character?) and such. The inclusion of the "guest characters" sounds no different than what EO4 already has.

Anything that grabs magoose's goat is fine in my book, I'll probably even buy 2 copies even though I don't even have a 3DS.

Why do you hate Atlus games again, Magoose?

as i said i don't hate atlus games,as much as i hate etrian odyssey and SMT spinoff (though i guess that does consitutes 90% of the whole atlus library)
there are many things that i find frustating in etrian odyssey, namely the job system, the skill tree (and especialy how some skills are useless or how some skills tends to actualy get worse the more point you spend on them as they get more expensive for what consistutes a very small improvement) those stupid gathering point that force you to make a farming party and the fact that the game has random difficulty spike's that you have to cheese in some manner... (just to remain in the theme of the original game, half of EO1 was becoming immortal through the use of the immunize skill)

as an added bonus i have a feud with atlus fanboy because everytime i open my mouth it turns out i'm wrong because "I'M NOT HARDCOREZ ENOUGH"

Hahahaha Atlus plotting against Magus confirmed.

i tought that was pretty clear when they announced SMT X FE,i fear what they might have next for me :(

ah-ah actualy strange journey is the only SMT spinoff i like, because it's like etrian odyssey minus all the stuff i hate from etrian odyssey, plus all the stuff i like from nocturne
i was refering to the trifecta of persona/devil summoner/devil survivor, they aren't bad games per se but i gave up half-bored on all of them and they aren't nocturne, and there is a single nocturne and a bajillion of them >:(

they should have remade nocturne :fbm

I'm playing Strange Journey right now.  I was thinking they ought to remake SMT I and II and finally give them a western release.
Remake of the first EO does seem kind of random.  Not that it seems like a horrible idea but... was anyone clamoring for this?  I mean... no western release for Eternal Punishment PSP and then this...

I will buy this day 1.

It is about time someone at Atlus realized that the company was sitting on a gold mine, one that was poorly explored, clumsily mined, and crudely presented in the form of the original EO1.

There really isn't, much like there isn't much of a market for Art Academy, and yet it's one of my favorite 'games' ever. I don't see how my earlier comments are at odds with my present interest in this title.

One series selling six figures worldwide doesn't make a market. Name me some more dungeon crawler series in the same vein as EO, then tell me if they even sell that much.

Andrex's replacement has arrived, I see. ???

On topic, looks like a decent remake. I gave up on EO4 after I "retired" all my guys to lv 22 and realized I had to grind back up to 40+ to keep progressing. Aint nobody got time for that!

If I designed 100 t-shirts and sold 50 of them, I would say theres a market for those shirts. If several people are buying shit, that constitutes a market.

Just because there's a market for your specific t-shirt, doesn't mean there's a market for t-shirts in general (hence "these games" since you seem so hell-bent on semantics). EO might be the exception, certainly not the rule, unless you're going to argue that the performance of it peers like the Dark Spire and Unchained Blades make a strong case for the vitality of the genre as a whole. And since your example suggests that 50 t-shirt sales constitutes a market, I have little doubt that you'd consider the dismal commercial performances of those games to be a moot point.

Okay, maybe I'm completely lost here. I was just assuming that even though EO sales aren't huge, Atlus keeps producing the games, because they're selling enough and the requisite company resources are minimal. I'm assuming Atlus is turning a profit.

I think he means that "Etrian Odyssey" specifically lost its meaning, because the games no longer take place in Etria. Wikipedia translates the original Japanese title as "Labyrinth of Yggdrasill", which is the best name.

There's definitely a market for the genre in Japan.  EO, Class of Heroes, Project X Zone, Wizardry, some recent Megaten games, and various PSP one-offs have all done well.  Outside Japan, I feel it's genuinely a tough sell, even for EO. Most who would be interested have transitioned to real time affairs like Skyrim.

Disagree. Legend of Grim rock was more popular than any EO I've seen in terms of fan discussion and people playing it.

In this week's Famitsu, they reveal that the upcoming remake of EO1 will offer a choice between "Story Mode" and "Classic Mode" when you start the game. In Classic Mode you can create your own party members like in the original series.

There's an option for Old and New music as well as three difficulty options (Picnic, Normal and Expert).

New EO also features a new gameplay mechanic - Grimoires. They're skill items which you get through a fixed random chance in battles. By equipping Grimoires on characters, they can use skills which are outside of their class options. There are also Enemy Skills on some Grimoires. and they can be crafted to create new ones. There are over 200 different Grimoire types.
