If Hayter isn't Snake then my interest literally takes a nosedive into the ground.

However I'm getting a feeling this is just a setup.

Also, DXHR is the best stealth game since MGS3.

GAMEPLAY DEMO.

It's like Kojima saw all the positive crap from the microwave scene in 4 and wanted to make an entire game out of it.

Is this really current gen?

Hayter's vo for Snake has gotten worse and worse. I don't see how anyone could want him to continue reprising his role as the character.

I guess show some pretty graphics and people will eat up anything.

Says the guy begging for ZOE
ZoE is actually fun and not tired.

He really has, but whatever, he's pretty much part of the series. It's just kind of strange not to have him.

Hey RahX get Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on steam so we can play multi instead of waiting to be disappointed by another mgs game.

Seriously, just help the guy instead of telling him to crawl.

David Hayter was never a good VA. Constipated, compressed, wanna-be whiskey-swilling-chain-smoking gravel.

It's too easy and has mediocre level design.
I'll give you easy, but mediocre? No fucking way. It's great, even if you don't factor in teleporting short (then longer) distances, which it also supports without breaking down entirely.

a whole lot of sour tears over 5 minutes of a tutorial section.

Remember when mgs1 didn't have a tutorial section and you had to learn to play the game? I was stuck in the first room forever. Learning the tricks of the trade like hiding under vehicles, using sounds to distract.

Just pure game play. Then you get to the helipad and - HOLY SHIT - cameras and lights! Snow leaves footprints! There are like three entrances into that damn hangar, there's a gun hidden in that damn truck and chaff grenades hidden on the far left side of the helipad where a camera is.

The game taught you to play it by the mere experience of playing it.

Can you imagine doing that tutorial section on a SPEED RUN? Yes I want to tip over a bunch of shit and crawl for 10 minutes. Wait. No I don't.

There is a clear distinction between these games. Old Metal Gear Solid was a stealth puzzle series that had rich puzzle dense game play. New MGS is a hubris fueled Hollywood sim. The mission statement of showing off a game demo of a guy crawling on the floor is clear. Only someone with interest in Hollywood bullshit would find that sort of demo interesting - not someone who cherished "tactical stealth action". As it is, why bother continuing to give something a shot to give you what you want - STEALTH PUZZLES AND GAMEPLAY - instead of more pretentious wank?

This is also particularly rich coming from the taco who bitches about such pretension in the Tomb Raider and Bioshock threads.

So MGS crap crawling on the ground for ten minutes good, Tomb Raider bad? LOL. your biases are clear.

This isn't about holding your hand. For me, it's much more about the game not being a pretentious piece of shit. I don't want to crawl and drawl and knock shit over for 10 minutes in a stealth game just like how I don't want to experience a deep and emotional experience from a beat em up. DON'T CARE.

There is a clear distinction in these series' priorities over time:

The MGS5 trailer shows not one second of stealth or espionage. Konami has killed almost every single of one of my favorite franchises...to fund...a crawling sim. Notice how in the MGS1 trailer it's all about THIS IS HOW THE GAME PLAYS and THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN DO IN THIS GAME?

Of course i'm angry.

That's just how games are advertised these days. Pompous wanna be Hollywood stuff to get attention, then a trickle of more and more information and trailers to keep it and build hype. There'll be a gameplay trailer eventually.

So what exactly is your problem? the presentation of the game or the gameplay? because evolving the stealth gameplay is exactly what Kojima does with each game.

GAMEPLAY DEMO.

When the entire stealth genre has squandered this generation, I expect a stealth game from a traditionally stealth franchise. MGS4 is one of my most disappointed and hated games - period. I hate the overwrought story, I hate the non-stealth gameplay added, I hate the overbearing story bullshit which in the past I was capable of ignoring, I hate the second half of the game is decidedly, for the most part, NOT about espionage. I hate the dramatic Hollywoodification of what used to be me a franchise about a series of puzzles to stay hidden using everything available. Instead, I'm crawling through a microwave for five minutes, or watching a 60 minute long ending cutscene, or I'm stalking some guy for 30 minutes instead of playing hide and seek.

Then the next game is revealed, we get a shitty reveal trailer and then try to show the game off with a gameplay demo and guess what? Oh, you wanted to see how we've improved the gameplay and want a pure stealth experience? Well fuck  you. Here's a guy crawling on the ground for six minutes. So for all intents and purposes, V will continue 4's vapid schlock.

It is a mix of the presentation and the embracement of trying to craft game experiences that don't fit within the framework of the stealth genre. A game of hide and seek is all I want, yet it seems that the more vocal MGS fans - the people who love the story - are the ones who get to eat their cake.

I agree a guy crawling is dumb, but get a grip, you know just as much as anyone else about what's in the game, which is nothing.   at least play it first, then talk about how bad it is in a thread.  That's where the real fun starts.

I'm not judging it at all. But based off of 4, it's hard to not be cautious, especially when the first gameplay demo is THAT.

I'm open to it, and I'm pretty sure I will buy it on day one. I'm just airing my frustration.

Snake Eater also featured music by an alternative rock band.

edit: Huh, didn't know this:

Quote
Originally, Kojima had planned for "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes" for the end credits, because they worked well with the game's space theme, but as the game developed, the theme became less significant. A colleague of Kojima's recommended Stellastarr, but Kojima misheard it for Starsailor.

Deus Ex is not a great stealth game. More than that, it's not even a PURE stealth game. It's merely a game where you CAN use stealth. There is a huge difference between those two, because stealth games live and die by their level design. There is a convenient vent and hackable door in almost every room, it also gets too easy due to upgrades. Stealth in that game is exploitable as it is predictable. If that's your idea of a great stealth game, I don't know what to say. I'll replay Chaos Theory instead. That said, DXHR does scratch the itch.

Stealth as a genre has been shit this generation, and this extends beyond Metal Gear, but thanks for bringing up 'nostalgia' as a talking point to make you look like an even bigger idiot.

Next thing you know you'll tell me to play the Arkham games, citing them as "great stealth games". What a low, low bar. And I LIKE the Arkham games.

You can skip upgrading, play on hard and never kill a single enemy to make it more challenging.

Your argument also applies to MGS. I can kill every person and walk around like nothing happened. Same goes for having more choices in every area.

Seriously now, stop riding the nostalgia cock for a sec and just shut up and go play some game.

I'm not riding any nostalgia cock. Stealth games are already niche. When it comes to stealth games, you have a selective amount to choose from and most of those have turned into crappy hybrid games. When it comes to stealth I prefer pure stealth games.

In MGS3, if you go on a rampage, there is a high chance of not surviving. Enemies don't play in that game, and cqcing multiple people isn't exactly easy. Your argument that MGS lacks choices in areas is also false, especially if we're talking MGS3. MGS3 has numerous pathways and ways to handle each area. DXHR relies on vents and hacking doors. MGS3 relies on using the fora and fauna of the environment (grass, climbing trees, hiding in stumps, pretending to be an alligator in swamp lands). The point is, the games allow for numerous ways to tackle any one area via espionage. DXHR however plays the exact way it does from the outset.

Skip upgrading? :lol When you use that argument, you're already out of it. Not kill enemies IS a good challenge in DXHR, though. But upping the difficulty (trust me I tried) doesn't really change the AI behavior patterns.

Like I said, DXHR is an okay stealth game. But to put it at the top of the stealth genre this gen proves my point. Stealth has gone the way of survival horror. If you don't like horror or stealth, cool. But I love both and haven't played a new great game in either of those genres in years.

My playthrough of DXHR is on hard and I'm doing a no kill no alerts run. I've found it gets boring once you learn the games quirks but I'm pretty sure it'll be better than MGS5. It's already better than MGS4 even without being a pure stealth game.

Any how, I find it funny how you keep bringing up Kojima, when I prefer Splinter Cell to MGS anyways.

Got Mark of the Ninja. Fun game, but hardly deep based on my playtime. It is mostly more kill everything in sight type "stealth" that many modern "stealth" games ascribe to. It reminds me of the Batman games in that its mostly steeped around power fantasy and doing cool stuff than evasion and espionage. Nothing wrong with that but my favorite parts of Chaos Theory is sneaking through an entire level without raising my gun at someones head.

Unless the game opens up much later or something the fact that people consider this the best pure stealth game of the generation is more of an indication of the genres current quality than anything else. I don't see how any fan of Thief 2 and 3, MGS3, and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory could remotely put something like this on the same level.

That said, its fun as fuck so it doesn't really matter. But the checkpoints really put a damper on the gameplay.

You know, I thought I'd given up on MGS after 4, but Peace Walker brought me back in and then when PW sucked from a story point of view (gameplay was great, however), I was tired of MGS again and didn't care much when the Ground Zeroes trailer went up last year.

But that was a darn good trailer.  Haven't seen a well edited game trailer like that in a long while and it's getting me pretty excited for the game.  I just hope it's not another let down and that having more creative freedom to tell whatever tale he wants in this made up time period means we'll get another good MGS like MGS3.

by comparison metal gear v could be any other next-gen game and you wouldn't realize it and features music by a (wikipedia search) alternative rock band

Oh shit, Space Oddity would've worked so well.  MGS3 is probably my favorite game of all time, but the ending credit roll song is its weakest cinematic link for sure.  Song's alright.  Then again, he's right in that the space theme of the game is pretty minor, so maybe space oddity would feel out of place.  I mean really, you finish a game about BIG BOSS and get a song about MAJOR TOM?  Would be kind of weird.  Kojima probably choose the right song.

Space Oddity is in Alan Wake's credits, and it's a striking way to end a game.

I sort of share what you've said about the series.  Learning that the bulk of MGSV is set 9 years after the events of Ground Zeroes/Peace Walker got me excited as it's distancing itself from the MGS3/PW baggage.  For the gameplay, an open world stealth action game sounds great, but again, this is the third time Kojima is promising it.  Hard to not get skeptical.  What I want is baby's first ARMA mixed with standard MGS fare, dammit.

If they have your sale, they don't care how much you bitch about it on the side. At least to the extent that it's not a SimCity level PR disaster.

They have my sale because of the base level demo and because stealth games are few and far between. When you work with genres likes stealth and horror that's what you gotta do to support.

i don't understand the issue with crawling demo thing. it's not like this is the entire game. it's a specific thing in the game and they wanted to show it because it's something that really hasn't been done in games. what's wrong with something a little different?

What was different about it? He could'nt use his legs yet and to make you feel that torment we make you play this overly long scene. By the way here's this douche not helping you while he tells you to hurry up. How is that unlike the microwave scene in MGS4 or any part of game where they try to spell out how weak the character is in order to make you feel it! But they didn't even do anything cool with the character's weakness. Maybe his stealth is diffrent because he's crawling?

Then ultimately, your discontent with its direction is entirely unheard.  Your vote is binary: for or against.  You are opting for 'for'.  That's all Konami will hear.

True, I just need to see more media I guess.

I think Himu is worried that this being what they wanted to show, the first time they showed the game, is indicative of a direction he doesn't agree with.  That Kojima is more worried about being cinematic than making a fun stealth game, which was a major problem Himu-chan had with MGS4.  I don't know about this crawling business, because as a gamer with an ounce of taste, I stopped caring about this bullshit series a long time ago, but I would say that replacing Hayter with a big-ass Hollywood voice might also point towards the things Himu is worried about.

Or Kojima didn't want to give much away and chose to show only the very start of the game, which happened to be a crawling section?

allegedly the whole moby dick thing was planned two years ago and supposed to be a "test" to see if people would accept the fox engine graphical capabilities without any prejudice based on the metal gear brand.  the initial tepid response to the phantom pain before people figured it out as a metal gear game, was, uh, mission accomplished?

kojima also said he expected people to figure it out.  only he didn't expect people to figure out the title (Metal Gear Solid V).  V instead of 5 is because it's a reboot/reintroduction of Metal Gear Solid, or something along those lines.  same reason was given as to why Hayter wasn't asked to return as Snake.

People figured it out right away.  And I mean right away, during the trailer.  It was pretty fucking stupid, and keeping it going was even better.

I think Hayter angered people. Only explanation. Him going off on how Snake should have died in mgs4 probably didn't help.
