GTA Lego City
« on: April 05, 2013, 09:23:15 PM »

There's a GTA-style Lego game, rated 80 on Metacritic. And it's only on Wii U, published by Nintendo, so it's not going to be on 360 or PS3.

Out of the few boritos who are willing to admit to owning a Wii U, has anyone bought this? Is it good?

It's like every Lego game you've ever played. Load times are atrocious but it's charming in the same way the other Lego games are.

So it's less GTA, and more like Lego Harry Potter, Lego Batman, etc.?

No there's some GTA to it, there's a big open world with a lot of stuff to find. But there's also some self contained levels with switches/builds etc...

Ack. Sounds like my cup of tea, actually.

I really can't rationalize a Wii U. My kids want one, but they are torn between getting a Japanese one (easy!) or an American one (harder, due to locale), because we're moving to the USA in the near future. They are worried about being unable to get more games once we get to America if we by a j-wii-u.

Would that make me a wii-u-aboo?

I suspect this will come out in Japan, too. Right now Amazon.co.jp only has the PAL version on import.

Just do the Van Cruncheon thing and buy one of each.  Or 2 of each.  Whatever.

I play every Lego game that comes out. On the PS3, they're easy Platinums, which is why this stack is sitting near my TV:

Undercover is the best Lego game ever made. Period. It takes the open world idea from Batman 2 and LOTR and turns it into a GTA-style city with TONS to do and lots of Easter Eggs.

Super Builds are new to the game. In addition to collecting bits like on the other Lego games, you also collect bricks that you can get by destroying objects and finding hidden super bricks. Once you have enough bricks you can do a Super Build. These range from vehicle stations where you can purchase vehicles to drive around in, ramps to do stunts and reach new areas, to larger objects like a ferry that's needed to reach an island prison to continue the story missions.

The only problem are the load times, but you put up with them because the game is so fun and will sap so much of your time. I know people who have played it until the battery in their gamepad died.

They're grind-fests, but they're pretty good overall.

I am a few Blue Minikits away from 100% on Lego Star Wars the Complete Saga, and will eventually get all of the first Lego Batman as well. They are fun, baby-easy games to play with my son.

It's a little sad that TT dropped co-op with Undercover. It's harder to rationalize game time if I'm not playing alongside my son.

Doesn't a gamepad die in 90 minutes?

So it lasts for two loading screens.

It could work easily on the story levels. In the open world I could see it being a mess though since only one person could be using the gamepad.
