Anyone here work with the Unity Engine?
« on: April 07, 2013, 10:05:58 PM »
I'm just grabbing the free version to play around with and get my next game project started (sorry for the delay in this, 2012 was a rough year).

to get the most out of unity I've found that you really have to manage your memory usage. To do that i've had to shrink my resources down quite a bit. Memory leaks happen often and are really hard to track as well, I found it easier to just adjust everything and make it all smaller res. Another thing to watch out for is shaders when you're debugging in mobile spaces. Each phone is different in what it can and can't handle. So test as much as possible to get the desired result.

I've personally been using Unity for a project in my portfolio and so far its been great. But I think the cost to get it onto mobile devices is a bit high. I started trying out Esenthel since its cheaper and found it to be pretty easy so far just like Unity.

Cool, it sounds ideal. Basically I want to get a working demo of a game, then look for funds for development and porting etc. if I lived in the US that would be Kickstarter, but I'll figure something out. Basically it's gonna be the spiritual sequel to Party Quest, but it's gonna be a 16-bit style jrpg rather than basic adventure game.

Just gonna jump into a few beginners tutorials today.

Indie GOGO is another avenue.

Just take your time it's not like you'll get the hang of it overnight. I know I sure as hell didn't and I still don't know everything about it.

Yeah I'm planning on the project taking at least a year or two.

I'm planning on starting to make a game this summer which I've been planning for about six years.  Good luck on yours.

I have some experience with Unity but it's been for research work and not game development. I only scraped the surface as far as scripting goes so I probably won't be much help in this thread.

I've been meaning to look at Unity as well. Maybe I should download and learn along Sceneman, the Bore's own PRODUCT-SHIPPED Indie game dev.

Do it! I have the mechanics and plot outline for the game all nutted out, just need to learn this shit, and get started. I just wish I had 10k to hire an artist. Fucking hell, after reading all those stories of people burning their kickstarter monies, I could STRETCH that shit

Maybe there's a Borian which would work with you on a Kickstarter. Put the collectives mind towards creating an elaborate cash grab à la Susan Wilson

Help Sceneman get to Saskatchewan and learn how to appreciate killing a bear! He needs money for round trip plane tickets and as much raccoon piss beer he can fit into a winnebago. Target: $60,000. Stretch goal: $100,000: Sceneman will fashion a costume from the dead bear's hide, and make Youtube videos of Nicolas Cage and John Marston impressions!

How about instead of Unity for your 16-bit RPG, using the latest version of RPG Maker? Would probably make development much easier and RPG Maker games are "in" lately (To The Moon, Ib, Yume Nikki)...

True... there's Game Maker too which supports more platforms that RPG Maker.

yeah fuck RPG maker, I'm porting this thing to mobile so I can at least try and recoup dev costs.

I've been checking out Multimedia Fusion 2 and it actually looks a lot more suitable than Unity for the scope of my project.

I downloaded it and have been poking around in it. I'll have a stab at it from tomorrow morning.

Are you doing any tutorials? Link me if you are.
