This is the pinnacle of western TV right here.

I've always been familiar with the show and its stature, but for some really odd (and stupid reason) I never gave it a chance, despite its availability on Netflix. However after Whiteman talked me into watching it, I finally gave it a chance starting with his favorite picks. And being introduced to it like that paid off big time.

From the get go the show tore down all my preconceived hang ups, such as fears of outdated topical messages, acting, scripts, etc. In fact, I felt almost the opposite about many of these aspects. The script and delivery can be so complex and thought provoking at times. It deals with an array of issues ranging from social and political issues to human psychology and existentialism. The acting, while understandably affected by period tropes, is nigh perfect. I heard that some of these people come from radio, and it really shows. And then we have Serling, whose narration and integration into the set is purely genius. And finally, the production and effects; I'm amazed by how well they aged. I mean, they're obviously limited, but those limitations are so cleverly disguised and sometimes utilized that I don't have to suspend my disbelief nearly as much as I thought.
I mean that intro looks great even today. :aah

Then you have the camera work, the lighting, the fact it's black & white, all contribute to how acutely stark and downright chilling it is at times! I can go on and on, and inject more of my hyperbole, but I only do so because of how genuinely surprised I am by it. And all this talk about the timeless quality of the show is ironic, because I recently read that after Serling was done with the show he started giving college lectures, and he continually urged the college kids to rip his work apart, accepting their assessment that even his best work was "moldy, citing that "they've aged like bread."

But enough with the lengthy introductions, after all I'm preaching to the choir here. Let's start with recommendations!

Here are my favorite episodes so far (I'm jumping all around), they're all based on recommendations as well:
- Where is Everybody? (s1e1)
- Walking Distance (s1e5)
- Time Enough at Last (s1e8)
- The Monsters are Due on Maple Street (s1e22)
- Eye of the Beholder (s2e6)
- Five Characters in Search of an Exit (s3e14)
- To Serve Man (s3e24)

I've also been lead to believe that some themes and ideas are sometimes recycled, with varying results. Mostly due having only two (three?) people write a show of this nature, so there's always a recurrence of subjects. So feel free to talk about that, or even post about some of the low points of the shows. It'll be interesting to experience those.

I heard that season 4 (the one with the 40 mins episodes) was sorta Zzzz. It's not even on Netflix so I doubt I'll bother. Also, someone has yet to suggest a season 5 episode so I'll take the hint.

Reading about the history of the show, it's easy to see where troubles came from, with Serling constantly battling with executives and sponsors. I'm not surprised he stopped caring by the end.

It's quickly becoming obvious that integrating a narrator into the set was a TV staple in that era.

It's a shame Thriller! isn't still streaming because that was amazing.

You should watch the Charles Beaumont TZ episodes as I think they're the best of the bunch.  I'm.....not a huge fan of the Rod Serling ones as they're a bit heavy handed.

Here's another display of ignorance, but a quick comparison between TZ and One Step Beyond/Hitchcock Presents reveals a jarring drop-off in IQ, even though the shows were a few years apart. Generally speaking, how can they remaster the format of a show this old into almost HD quality?

Aside from a few episodes in season 2, the Twilight Zone was all shot on film, rather than videotape [which was cheaper].

Actually Outer Limits has some very good episodes in it.  It's certainly B Movie material with a huge focus on Bug Eyed Monsters and the like but they also have some very good very brave stuff for the time such as The Demon With the Glass Hand, The Architects of Fear, and I, Robot.  Many of the episodes were written by Robert Stefano who worked with Hitchcock on Psycho.

And Aside from the recycled effects for the "alien" the first episode of Outer Limits is actually quite good.

Shaka, my favorite crime writer Fredric Brown did several episodes of Hitchcock Presents.  You should watch all of those.

I love the Twilight Zone! I think I read somewhere that Rod Serling had bad stage fright, and in the first few episodes you can kind of see a nervousness in his body language. It just makes him all the more endearing to me.  :-[

While 20-25 minutes long episodes is a standard for many shows, I'm starting to realize how odd it feels for an anthology series. Establishing the setting, narrative and characters in such a short amount of time must take extra effort. I'm not opposed to it or wishing they were longer, since the format works well and the stories are succinctly told, but they always feel... shorter than they actually are.

I'd love to see the 80's revival of The Twilight Zone.  I vaugely remember it from my kid-ness, and it can't possibly not be better the 00's Forrest Whitaker hosted version.

Outer Limits definitely had some amazing episodes, and even many of the not-go-good ones are cool in a campy, bored Saturday afternoon way. The Demon With the Glass Hand is amazing.

I'm working through Charles Beaumont's episodes. So far I've seen:
- Perchance to Dream (good)
- Elegy (okay)
- Long Live Walter Jameson (okay)
- A Nice Place to Visit (okay)
- Living Doll (great)

I'm not crazy about what I've seen so far, with the exception of Living Doll. Then again the other episodes I've seen were recommended by Time and AVClub.

Eric, if you're reading this, out of the following episodes, what are you most favorite Beaumont episodes?

"The Howling Man"
"Static" (story by O. Cee Rich)
"The Prime Mover" (story by George Clayton Johnson)
"Long Distance Call" (co-written with Bill Idelson)
"Shadow Play"
"The Jungle"
"Dead Man's Shoes"
"The Fugitive"
"Person or Persons Unknown"
"In His Image"
"Valley of the Shadow"
"Miniature"
"Printer's Devil"
"The New Exhibit"*
"Passage on the Lady Anne"
"Number 12 Looks Just Like You" (co-written with John Tomerlin)
"Queen of the Nile"*

I really like Beaumont's paranoia episodes and episodes which deal with shifting identities personally.

so

"Person or Persons Unknown"
"In His Image"
"Miniature"
"The New Exhibit" (you'll know the ending to this one like 4 minutes in)
"Dead Man's Shoes"

out of those, only "Person or Persons Unknown" and "Dead Man's Shoes" were available on Netflix, and both are fantastic episodes. I totally see allure of his writing and the prominent "identity" theme. The rest are unfortunately part of season 4, which is currently unavailable.

Another episode Beaumont episode I saw recently was "Number 12 Looks Just Like You." And while it had an anticlimactic conclusion I really thought it was a fantastic, stirring episode that's reminiscent of "Eye of the Beholder" though with more specific commentary on plastic surgery. It's crazy how it's even relevant today that it was 50 years ago, with almost everyone looking like they went to the same doctor and whatnot.

Anyhow, great recommendations, great show. This man is pleased.

That's the "send them to the cornfield" episode, right? That ep scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

You should look up Joe Dante's movie remake of "It's a Good Life."

The rest of the movie is pretty shitty, but that part is actually really awesome. It mostly swaps out creepy for goofy, but it's really well done and has the usual Joe Dante practical effects flair.

I watched and loved both.

The invaders with zero lines and eerie acting had one of biggest nightmare qualities out of what I've seen so far.

Five Characters was actually the first episode I watched. That set and theme of existential crisis made it so stark it was burned in my head.
