What game ideas have never been implemented? The thread
« on: April 16, 2013, 03:56:40 AM »
2d side scrolling beat'em'up style game like ninja warriors again but with xp, skill trees and a move system like streetfighter.   I guess the beat'em'up genre died too early for it to happen.

I dunno if it is playing games for so long that has done this to me but i cant really think of unique game ideas anymore.  It is like tradition has set in and blinded me.  Is it just me?

Ideas are unlimited, but the forms of interaction are not. It's no wonder most end up refining or putting their own twist on an existing concept. That said, this stuck out to me recently:

Quote
As the mother of a litter of cubs you are forced out from familiar and safe surroundings to find new shelter in a beautiful, but dangerous world. The harsh reality of nature plays a pivotal role in the game whilst at the same time Shelter aims to pay a homage to the great outdoors and all its imposing beauty.

I don think it is the input that imposes restrictions.  It is the fact that publishers can never gauge if a new concept will sell well or not.

It's not just input, i.e. controllers/buttons vs. whatever else, but also what we can simulate, however simplified it is. AI is a big road block, for instance. Optimally you'd put another human at the other end but you can't do that for every game.

Some other games that are fairly unconventional:
Quote
Cart Life is a retail simulation for Windows which showcases the lives of street vendors in a small city which is located in the Western United States. Each of the playable characters has specific goals and special traits, but also unique addictions which the player must accomodate in order to succeed within the game.

Miasmata is a first-person survival/adventure game, developed from the ground-up by brothers Joe and Bob Johnson. You play as Robert Hughes, a plague-stricken scientist on a journey to discover a cure. Your adventure begins on the shores of a remote and mysterious island. Long ago, the island was inhabited by a group of indigenous people, whose extant monuments still decorate the island landscape. The island is now home to a scientific research outpost and it is your hope to reunite with your colleagues working there. Unfortunately, you'll soon discover that something has gone terribly wrong.

During your adventure, you will encounter a mysterious and deadly creature. This creature can stalk you for miles, lurking behind grasses and vegetative cover. By treading carefully and with stealth, you may be able to elude the creature. If you are careless, however, you will be forced to confront the creature head-on.

Note how you are posting steam greenlight games?  These are generally self funded aren't they or kickstarted?

Yeah, AAA can't afford the risk, but that doesn't mean they're not advancing. They're just going at a glacial pace compared to the indies. Isn't that the same in any entertainment medium though? I don't have the necessary bird's eye view to judge that, but it does seem that conventional genres rule their respective media. Well, it sounds intuitively correct, anyway.

I dunno about advancing.  It feels like they are regressing even more every gen.  To me anyway.  There were a lot more inventive games in the ps2 era than the ps3 era even though it was longer.   But the indie game scene is getting bigger because of it.

A survival/stealth-oriented game where you play as an escaped slave in the antebellum South.
