Square put out some very nice, affordable volumes of production art with V-Jump for several of the FFs. These were called "mook," from "magazine/book;" clearly Sho Nuff was not in the marketing meetings to correct them. They ran less than ¥1000, and have a trove of great art in them. I've got them from VII through X, though I've never played a FF other than FF:T.

It appears that with XI or XII Square disengaged from V-Jump, and started to make them more about the actual game screenshots instead of the background and creature concept work.

FFXII's media train had please ty of art for the game. Though what you say is true. I was heartbroken they never showed off art for XIII in the media hype. It was cg shot after cg shot. The in game portraits aren't even artistic portraits. They're just cg portraits.

Maybe I'm playing the wrong western RPGs but every single one I've played that attempted action-based combat has been extremely janky and stiff, not to mention easily broken and not with much strategy. Mass Effect 3 probably handled combat the best but it got pretty repetitive fighting the same 3 types of enemies over and over in a game that is extremely combat-heavy to begin with. The older, turn-based western RPGs are definitely better. But between the art, combat engines, Lord of the Rings/Star Wars cliches, I can't get into most of them at all.

These games are based on games like BG2, which for my money has better combat than any jrpg. Get real tiesto. I think you mean 3d wrpg combat systems. These games will be turn based.

What himu said. Not to mention, pretty much ALL arpgs (Diablo, Titan Quest, etc) are western developed and have really great combat, unless you're a pussy that cries when you have to use a mouse and keyboard for anything vidya related.

Basically, you like jprgs. Nothing wrong with that, but admit to your bias.

I always thought of Stalker as an FPS that incorporated RPG elements, but I guess it makes no difference in the end.
