I'm gonna relaunch the GIA (or at least thegia.com) later this year. Gonna "officialize" the archive and set up a Penny Arcade Report-style area for editorials and link-sharing.
I'd love to write for you! :P

PS1 is one of my fave systems ever... so good. The RPGs were to die for. Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden 2, and motherfucking Star Oean 2 and Arc the Lad 2....

fuck the new systems, PS1 was the best. I love all the shitty 3D games with the awkward controls in the games. But the RPGs are where the system really stands out... Star Ocean 2, you can pickpocket your party members, hwo good is that?

Fuck  I am so drunk. But seriously, I lvoe the PS1. Second favorite system behind the SNES, truly the golden age of gaming. The reason why it was so good is because the dev. costs were so cheap, so you got a lot of random JP companies releasing random shit on it, that had SOUL. Unlike most modern games. Check this out:

(I only realyl play JP games, last westenr game I played was 50 Cent: Bulletproof, which was a good game. What is your favorite western game, folks?)

If I could like posts twice, I would do it with this post. This system is going to get me back into game collecting. I didn't sell ANY of my psx games, and I'm sitting here with about 50 psone games, mostly all NTSC.

Those three videos are amazing. Lots of stuff I've never even seen nor witnessed nor touched and most of them can be played without knowing Japanese. Simply amazing. Whoever says playstation 1 hasn't aged well should be slapped in the face. Twice.

Sweet mercy.

There is a God.

And his name is Murayama.

He hath forsaken me.

Nietzsche was right. God is Dead.

PSX APPRECIATION THREAD? I GOT YO' BACK, BRUDDAH. :DAP

It was a seriously wonderful piece of hardware. I think you can trace Sony's "beginning of the end" back to the utter failure of marketing on this piece of hot hardware.

It was a digital video recorder with no internet requirement (G-Guide received data through standard analog TV signal); users could edit the recorded programs, delete ads, or write them to a lower recording quality to save HDD space; a DVD-R/RW writer which could author DVDs with menus based on super easy templates; and it had an ethernet port for connection to the internet; oh, and it had a PS2 in it, so you could play games, download PS2 network games, or PS1 games.

If the TV industry hadn't switched to digital-only broadcasts here, I'd still be using it.

Oh, wait. You mean the first PS. Yeah, it was pretty cool.

エロいなぁwww
Best fighting game EVAR.

Well, probably VF is the best, but Tobal's my favorite.

thegia was my favorite news site.
Mine too! And I only found it about 3 weeks before it went offline.  :'( :'( :'(

Popolocrois is one of those jrpgs I've wanted to play but couldn't due to language barrier.

there is a psp version that is translated

i think i played it exactly for 5 minutes before the encounter rate got me

ehy azure dreams is a good game! but it's a roguelike with mon,not exactly what i would call a relaxing game, tail concerto too,it's more like a furry worse version of megaman legends

Yeah, the PSP version of Popolocrois featured a heavily-modified version of the story of the first 2 games on PS1. It also suffered from framerate drops and high encounter rate IIRC. I have both the import original, and the PSP game, the latter sits unopened... still to this day.

Lovely boxart though:

thousand arms is boooooooooooooring, when you enter a battle only 1 of your party members can fight while the other all dick around and support your fighting one,it's not much of a dicking around game as it is just another jrpg

the only things that make the game somewhat amusing are it's 90 anime look and the fact that it can be perceived as a prototype of many :uguu rpg that came later on

have you ever played monster rancher? maybe you could dig that,i totaly loved the game as a kid,it's a monster raising simulation game but you create your monsters depending on your CD,some CD even net you special monsters (one of the monsters you can get is a demon girl and if you put dead or alive you get one that looks like kasumi for example, metal gear get you a bandana monster :lol)

I remember liking Thousand Arms when I did my psx rpg binge in 2001 along with suikoden 1/2, azure dreams, tales of destiny, tactics ogre;etc But that was over 12 years ago and I only played it once.

Never played Monster Rancher. I'm not really talking about rpgs.

Forgot about Boku no Natsuyasumi. Those three vids Tiesto posted had a few games like it. Definitely consider the train sims in the same category. Welp, time to learn Japanese.

curious if monster rancher will hold up without the novelty of finding monsters in CDs.  I barely remember the 'game' part of it.  this is all around the pokemon period and I ended up playing monster rancher and digimon world games more than I should have.  dark times.

Man...I don't give a shit about MML, MML2, or Tron Bonne at this point.  Have 'em all complete.  I never check these prices...it sounds like I could sell a few "rare" games and fund the next Xbox and Playstation.

EDIT: I see Tron Bonne completed auctions for $100-$170.  Where is $250 coming from?  New, factory-sealed copies go for more.

whoops, don't listen to me.  I usually look at the Buy-it-now prices when i'm shopping ebay...hence my skewed price.  I'm starting to warm up to the idea of bidding though.   Do you have to snipe people on these things or can I just put in a $150 max bid on tron bonne and chill?

i swear it was higher before.  guess i shouldn't have gotten so excited about the copy i bought for $80.  it is mint however.

Harmful Park is great.

UFO is from the creators of MOON and has the same weird-ass sense of love and humor.

One of my favorite J-only games is The Adventures of Little Ralph(ちっぽけラルフの大冒険)

Love this game!  It was even more amazing considering the crap Polygon Magic put out before it (like Vs.  :yuck)  Sucks it never got a sequel.   :'(

Don't remember it coming out on the same day as JSR, but release lists confirm that.  I know I got both of those games at launch, but only remember getting JSR and 3rd Strike on the same day...

Nope.  PS1-only, Japanese only.  Pretty much all in English, so it's weird that it never got a western release.

Polygon Magic also released Shaolin, a four-player simultaneous fighter, but it also sucked like Vs. did.  Don't they just make CG movies for games now?

And weird, I see SHRB listed as a 2011 release for Playstation on Gamefaqs.  Did they re-release PS1 games that late or was it added to PSN?

Highly suggest going through Musashi for anyone who wants a Zelda like game for the psx that isn't Alundra. I replayed it last year and it is still a fantastic game. Straight up classic.

Threads of Fate

One of the better looking ps1 games for sure.

Like Musashiden, it is another game where you gain the abilities of monsters you kill. Except that in Threads of Fate, you actually change INTO the monster.

Another beautiful Squaresoft Ps1 project and it pulls off most of what it sets out to do extremely well. I find it to be on the more ignored side of Square's ps1 games compared to others like the Final Fantasy's, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve;etc.
