Robert Anton Wilson was a science fiction author, a consciousness expansion trailblazer, and all around shit kicker. I loved him and loved his books. The Illuminatus! Trilogy is still one of my all time favorite books and has influenced my thinking, writing and general level of paranoia ever since I read it in high school over 10 years ago. Sad news.

Yeah, this was a bummer. Read some of his last blog entries. He kept good throughout everything.
He had it pretty rough last year. He was taking donations online just so he could afford rent, which is absolutely heartbreaking.

As a long time Wilson fan, I know exactly what you're saying. I half-jokingly thought of him as a surrogate father because he's had so much influence on me and I really did almost love him like a friend. I'd go as far as calling him the 20th century's most important philosopher. In spite of all the information he gave us, the greatest thing about Wilson was his complete lack of pretense and ego. He could be talking about heady subjects like alternate realities or non-Aristotelian logic or modern fascism, but he was always pleasant and down to earth and funny and charming while doing so.
