So Sony tells us the worst kept secret.

Quote
Sony Computer Entertainment has announced Gran Turismo 6, the latest version of PlayStation's best-selling franchise, will be released in the holiday season, 2013. The news was revealed today by Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi at an event held to celebrate 15 years of the top-selling series.

"GT6 for PlayStation 3 will bring new levels of authenticity to 'the Real Driving Simulator' as well as introducing stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface," a press statement read.

"A new compact game engine will improve operation and increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content."

The game is also set for connectivity with devices such as smartphones and tablets for social and community functions.

All of the cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 5 will be retained in GT6. But notable additions to the line-up of historic cars, road cars and the latest race cars, brings the total car list to 1200 at launch, with new cars set to be continually added online.

Several thousand aerodynamic parts and custom wheels will be available for almost all cars, and players can personalise their own custom cars in-game as well.

The UK's Silverstone Circuit will be one of seven new locations in Gran Turismo 6, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available, 19 of them being new.

New tracks are also set to be made available online, while the course maker has also seen improvements.

The press statement confirmed that the GT Academy series, which sees Nissan and Sony team up to find real racing drivers, will be returning.

Other notable partnerships in the development of GT6 have been with tyre manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension company KW Automotive.

"It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo," explained Kazunori Yamauchi, during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit.

"Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform.

Wise choice. I see some people already moaning that this won't be on the PS4 for launch.

Gran Turismo 5 is probably the most overdesigned yet undercooked game I've ever played.

CVG understands the leaked press release is not fake, though it does not detail many of the game's features that will be revealed later today at a live event.

It's not the usual action to lock a leaked press release thread is it?

SCEA PR deals directly with GAF (provides official assets for OTs, money for the OT makers, etc) and if they haven't released it yet GAF doesn't want to piss them off.

GT6 for PlayStation 3 will see many enhancements, improvements and additions to the game. bringing new levels of authenticity to ‘the Real Driving Simulator’. Features revealed today include stunning new tracks and cars and an overhauled user interface. There’s also a new engine, which will improve game operation. Meanwhile, we are set for expanded connectivity with other devices, and increased social and community functions.

The cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 5 — which has now sold over 10 million copies since launching in 2010 — will return in GT6, but notable new additions will bring the car lineup to over 1,200. Players will also be able to customize their rides to a greater extent than ever before.

Amongst the track line-up, the UK’s famous Silverstone Circuit will be just one of seven new locations in Gran Turismo 6, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available — 19 of them brand new. This already impressive lineup of cars and tracks will be added to by future DLC drops beginning after launch.

Enhancements and improvements also extend to a much-improved course maker function, which will provide several kilometers of gorgeous scenery, including the magnificent backdrop of Andalucía. The course maker will also include a new GPS data feature, which will increase the freedom of track creation in the game.

Sounds and looks like GT 5.5

And frankly, while I don't give a shit about Gran Turismo personally, it's nice to see continued support for the PS3.

Only 7 new tracks?  (compared to 24 in GT5)

 :yuck

I remember when people were talking about how GT3 had ~15 tracks and then GT4 had ~70.  To show how much new content GT6 would probably have since they wouldn't have to make a whole new engine.  3+ years later and it's basically $40 expansion pack, lol

I devoured the first two and did everything except the crazy 12 and 24 hour endurance races in the fourth. I don't even have a license so I don't really care about how realistic these games are supposed to be, they were just fun to play. Especially with a controller, using the d-pad no less. That said, the fourth was kind of sterile. I hear 3-spec or whatever it was called didn't take itself as seriously, but I never played that. It's a mass appeal, sort of casual, sort of hardcore series.

GT's not that bad.  :-\ But it's been outclassed by Forza since the first Forza launched. It's sad that Kazunori continues to dick around in real cars instead of playing virtual car sims, seeing what people are doing (read: Playing Forza) and then doing the same. Then again their fanbase cries bloody murder if someone even mentions a Livery Editor so they (the fans) reap what they sow in regards to "OMG GT5 IS UNDERCOOKED!"

I'd like GT and Forza more if they embraced 'The Real Boring Driving Simulator' aspect.  I play these game is the most boring way imaginable: by drive around on empty tracks in different cars to appreciate the differences and for fun of driving.  I hate them for the careers, racing, and 'game' parts.

Forza has some fantastic multiplayer though, and can get quite nasty because of the severity of the car damage. But I can understand people not enjoying them.

I mean, it's a lot better than GT though that's not saying much. That said the car damage and attention to detail push Forza way ahead of GT for me and I find it fun. Haven't played since the first one on xbox though. Another great thing about Forza is that it rewards creativity and allows players to make and customize their own cars. That's really cool, as no other racing game does what Forza does in that regard. Putting it in the same class at GT is doing it a disservice imo.

Forza is in the same "class" because it's attempting the same thing GT is: Racing simulator.

Forza gains the edge in regards to trying to foster a community online. Something GT didn't really do even with GT Planet/fansites. The Livery Editor allows people to trade for really good art/liveries that the GT community simply doesn't want.

Drive Club seems to be Sony's answer to Forza since GT itself won't change. Though really, Forza dropped car clubs from 2-3 (it was brought back in 4?) so I probably shouldn't say it's the answer to Forza when Forza itself dropped features that the first had only to take 1-3 games to bring them back... :/

The racing itself is fine. The problem is racing rubber-band AI in addition to the grind/"simulator" aspect. Not everyone is into doing 5 races to make enough cash to get an F1 car to drive. The "arcade" is supposed to fix this, but no one uses Arcade mode since it doesn't open up gates to other areas and kinda gets boring.

Arcade mode should be a "sandbox" like you want, but the actual game itself should be slightly less grindy and more "game"-y, if you know what I mean.
