You can boycott it all you want. Me and my bros will be pwning noobs and watching sports on our Xbox Ones.

your bros are going to end up being shipped to the middle east with their xbuck ones and not be able to play a single game. :teehee
If you are talking about the army, they won't need internet.

In other news Gamestop is happy

Quote
Along with gamers all over the world, the GameStop team is eagerly anticipating the upcoming launch of the Xbox One this holiday season,” he told me via email. “We are excited about the immersive entertainment experience that the Xbox One offers, and the fact that the new console will support the unlimited trade-in and resell of pre-owned games, which is something our 30 million PowerUp Rewards members have told us they want. We will continue to work with Microsoft and publishers to maintain a seamless transfer of pre-owned games, and enable a smooth transition to this exciting new generation of consoles. We believe GameStop is primed and ready to deliver this new console to our customers.”

lol at people thinking that Gamestop will boycott Xbone

I tried to tell people...

And Jesus fuck at that amirox post.  If I had it to do over again, I would post the "amirox is a great big blubbering vag" thread that got me perm'd over there any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Oscar, I think we both know that a boycott of even every GAFFOT out there would achieve fuck all.  Further, while I agree that yes as a "gamer" this shit is worth boycotting, I also think that "gamers" are a bunch of fucking idiots and deserve what they're about to get.

Basically, this is what the industry is doing to itself and it's customers, nothing is gonna stop it, and I can't think of a better bunch of fucktards to go down in the ship together.  I plan on kicking back, popping a cold one and watching it all unfold as entertainment.

I'm 100% on board for any boycott. We'll cross this bridge with Sony as well if they go down this road.

Microsoft has now come out in the open and stood behind what we all feared. There's no confusion left but in the tiniest nuances of this story: they are gunning for us as consumers, and it's either we stop it now or this industry radically changes into something not worth saving (if it even survives at all anyway).

If this not worth a boycott, absolutely no bit of game news would ever warrant such. If this is not worth a boycott, then we might as well all just go home and allow any business to take advantage of us simply because we don't want to put in the effort to push back. If this is not worth a boycott, then we never really loved games in the first place and this hobby of ours needs to go down in flames anyway.

I say, if this is not worth a boycott, then nothing in this industry ever would be.

Fun fact: Elvis's favorite childhood comic book character was Captain Marvel Jr. That's who he based his hairstyle on, and when he got older and drugged out that's who he partially based his stage costumes on. So basically all those chicks were throwing their panties at a comic nerd cosplayer.

Sure, if it were just GAF, it would mean little.  But look at it this way: If GAF can actually boycott something, isn't that a sign that people with more self-discipline are looking into skipping the product as well?

I disagree. GAF represents hardcore gamers to the nth degree, I don't believe they represent a majority of gamers. The dudebros and children who bought millions of Xbox 360s this gen are still going to buy this thing for online CoD and Madden, and whatever new IP Microsoft creates to replace Gears. Most of my dudebro friends are turned off by the TV focus thus far but I'm willing to bet they'll all come around once the 15 GAMEZ are revealed.

I could be wrong but I'm starting to believe the DRM freak out seems bigger to us due to the online community we congregate with. Nintendo kind of proved you don't need the "hardcore" to do well, and I'm getting the impression MS is going the same route except they're focusing on college kids and 30something yo dads instead of mothers.

I think it's been shown over and over that the hardcore is and has always been the backbone of your console. Casuals will only get you so far. If the hardcore hivemind rejects the XONE it will most definitely affect it's overall success.

Your problem is that you have yet to accept the reality nor the truth: Dudebro and children trade in and lends games. ALL THE TIME. Even a stupid ass snotty nosed brat will realize he's been shafted. So yeah, MAYBE they'll buy it - if retailers don't put it in the back of the store, or openly suggest shoppers get other systems instead. And that's assuming they'll get it after this backlash.

Your problem is that you don't assume dudebros consider themselves hardcore gamers or read gaming sites. I knew plenty of frat guys who read gaming sites regularly, played games regularly (albeit, CoD, GTA;etc), traded games regularly. Dudebros have likely already READ the gaming sites and heard this news. You know what dudebros who don't do that do? They call up their nerdy game friend (me) and ask about what system they should get.

It's like you are ignoring history. Entirely. Do you have any dudebro gamer friends?

As for children. LOL. When mommy and daddy read this shit about xbone on MAJOR NEWS OUTLETS such as bbc, cnn, time;etc. they're not gonna buy that shit. Are you crazy? :lol

As for gaf being a representation of hardcore gamers. WHO DO YOU THINK BUYS CONSOLES AT LAUNCH?

You keep saying,"this will be successful lol" when all the issues stacked together are bigger than Shaka's penis.

A big problem I've got with people who dump dudebros all in the same box is that they ignore the variety of that group. In college, I hung around a bunch of frat guys, they'd ask me for RE5 tips and crap, and would jizz when Gears came out. They played a specific type of game, but were DEFINITELY gamers. I'm talking about the guys who bought the Halo 3 LE so he could have that nerdy ass whack Master Chief head statue. Some of them even had ps3s. One guy wanted me to mod his psp just so he could play Metal Gear Solid on it. People forget that dudebros likely have always existed. You think the guys who bought NBA Live and Madden 97 still don't play games? They do. One guy who was in my graphic design classes always read Sherdog, Bloody Elbow, and...Halo and Mass Effect websites. Guy was a total fanboy dudebro who always acted hard, and made his designs based around the military (no joke). He only played shooters and he still knew what was up in gaming news land and actively tried to catch up.

My little cousin is the same exact way. Only plays shooters, Bungie fanboy, and even he doesn't want the xbone.

I know this is purely anecdotal, but those are the guys that buy systems at launch.

And yet MS are trying to sell a console directly to them, and they read this stuff online?

Clusterfuck.

I'm going to stick to the general prediction that people, especially consumers, are dumb. DRM sucks but dudebros will get over it when their friends are all playing the next CoD, Madden, Halo, Gears, new big IP etc. I'm guessing the "share with family" thing will be used to share/borrow games.

I'm not defending anti-consumer shit, just saying it could very well work. It's not like being anti-consumer fails all the time (see: Microsoft).

You say consumers are dumb, when we're talking about an industry that historically gives the finger to any hardware company that tries to fuck us or can't keep up. We immediately turned our backs on Sony, the very second they announced 599 US dollars and we're talking about a generation that grew up playing on Sony systems, just like we had with Nintendo before. wii60.com sprang up and backlash occurred over night.

599 US dollars is peanuts compared to this.

The "consumers are dumb" argument is cute and all, but doesn't in any way match the gaming industry's history not by a damn sight.

What it'll come down to, ultimately, is games. And so far, Sony is leading in that area.

the only way ahead in the industry is flexible pricing, and no one does that better than them two. i think the only way xbone and ps4 are gonna have any traction at all is if they can keep up steady releases of budget DD games that people will play in between major releases. without those cheap releases console gaming becomes a hobby that is too expensive to keep up with and more players will continue to look elsewhere.

I have a fairly reliable sample I use to gauge things.  It's how I can separate irrelevant GAF freakouts like MW2 and horse armour from GAF freakouts that represent a wider picture like PSP Go and DmC.

I remain pretty confident this used game DRM/online check is something that extends well beyond the GAF radius.

Is this method "looking at the assloads of major news sites covering this"?

posted this stuff elsewhere, but i like sniffing my own butt enough to repost here:

Hardcore gamers don't amount to shit in the grand profit scheme - parents do, and the more convoluted you make things for parents, the less likely they're gonna buy into it. My fiance is still pissed about her Rock Band songs being tied to the hardware when her kids' Wii broke. Guess who's never getting a Wii U?  I would absolutely bet good money on this push flaming out spectacularly and quickly. Game consoles aren't PCs, they aren't phones, and they aren't tablets. They're different animals altogether, and parents are always going to see them as toys. When your kids' toys make you jump through a bunch of hoops before they're "allowed" to loan them to their buddy down the street, alongside nickel-and-diming you to death, you tell your kids to find other hobbies.

Making it an extra hassle to trade in games, restrictions on loaning, constant online checks - combine that with a $400 console and they're basically all but outright telling parents to just go ahead and get their kids an iPad, where all the games are either free or eventually a dollar. Having to wait 30 days just to give something away, making sure it's connected for the daily check, filling out a bunch of form shit at the game store just to trade something in and then getting even less for more trouble, fielding constant "why isn't my game working" complaints - all that's just needless bother to a parent. Buying your kid a $20 iTunes card and saying "here, go nuts" is easy as pie.

I can't wait to see the ashen-faced public backpedaling and apologies a year from now. I love a good self-immolation.

And now I'm getting kinda tired of talking about it. I'm not buying any of this shit, so it's pointless. I'd rather just play some games.

Backpedaling a bit,ha?So it's all about sugarcoating a turd?

This thing would be easy to predict if there was no game industry crash looming around. The real question is,what kind of publisher(consumer) will survive the crash?

Sony is leading in games by their console being game centric. For me there is a big diff in terms of appeal so far simply due to that

How do you know this? MS is showing a ton of games tomorrow. Sony is too, but it's not like they showed anything interesting at the May reveal. Shooter, racing game, and some multiplat stuff.

This DRM stuff is starting to get much more negative mainstream coverage!   WSJ, Redbox sent a text to customers warning them, Time magazine, some others.  It's not just another gaf "we sort of have power" thing.

They both didn't show much at their console reveals because they were saving their load for E3.

I dont think there is anything ms can show to make me ignore this used games stuff.

Also the lack of power in the xbone is not really appealing with 6 years ahead.

It all depends on your taste in games. So far both systems only have a handful of exclusives announced. Listwars™ from what's currently listed on Wikipedia.

Xbox One exclusives
• Fantasia: Music Evolved
• Forza Motorsport 5
• LocoCycle
• Quantum Break
• Ryse
"Console exclusive"
• Titanfall (1 year according to Crazy Buttocks on a Train)

PS4 exclusives
• Basement Crawl
• Driveclub
• Infamous: Second Son
• Killzone: Shadow Fall
• Knack
• Super Stardust HD successor
"Console exclusive"
• Blacklight: Retribution
• Daylight
• DC Universe Online
• PlanetSide 2
• Primal Carnage: Genesis
• War Thunder
• Warframe

I get all my multiplatform games for PC, so console exclusives are meaningless to me.

That lineup isn't particularity impressive.  PS4 is winning by default at this point.  Xbox One has been so bad it recolored Sony's PS4 unveil as something fresh and exciting when in reality there was a Killzone demo.  And with all the rumors going around, it sounds like Microsoft will have a better games lineup (at E3) than Sony.  And I don't think Sony has any franchise that could compete with a Halo announcement, perception-wise.

Also, if Sony announces a similar DRM scheme to the Xbox One, people will lose their shit worse than they did (are) for Microsoft.  Surprising how many people believe Sony will do the right thing, or more accurately, isn't stupid enough to do the same thing after all the shit Xbox is getting.

Plenty of people have been claiming for years that Sony will charge for online access next-gen and that didn't happen. I expect them to keep their current DRM system. Of course, publishers are free to add their own DRM if they're not happy. Capcom already did this with some of their PSN games and I'm sure EA will add something to their PS4 games.

Their first party stuff is miles ahead quality wise of MS's first party turds.

Yeah I kind of double-took at that.  Sony's games are leading in what, exactly?  Apathy?  Mediocre sales?

Sony has better games because gamers want to cry about the xbone.  This isn't that complicated.  Himu has become basically the Bore's worst poster in the past couple of months.

To be fair, Sony has had more first party games I wanted to play over the last 3 or 4 years.

Ditto. MS-to-Sony turncoats might have a better leg to stand on if Team Ico wasn't a total dev trainwreck this gen, though.

I'm not even disagreeing that that's the case... I just think this sudden Sony worship is more rooted in "MS KICKED OVER OUR MAGAZINE RACK!" style internet nerd outrage than in anything Sony's really done.

It would be really funny for MS to have a better game showing than Sony at E3.  Not likely, probably, but it would be hilarious for those of us who are watching this as entertainment.

All this backlash might have spooked Sony into dropping any plans for DRM checks of their own games, but I guarantee almost every single big third-party publisher is going to have some kind of check for their games. Sony might say their system itself doesn't require online, but if all the games you want to play have it, then guess what? You have yourself an always online system.

As someone who mostly play exclusives, third-party DRM isn't that big of a deal. Games from Activision, EA, and Ubisoft might sell well, but most of them are boring as fuck. Smaller publishers aren't going to create their own DRM systems.

Rumors say that Sony DRM tech works offline.Disc is marked somehow.

Apparently it's even more convoluted than Xbone stuff.
