So basically you're still getting fucked, just in a different way - which I knew would be the case. I will say that of the two Sony's being a lot smarter in keeping their mouths shut about it and trying to ease it out there a little bit at the time. Still awful, but good business sense for now.

Sony's not a savior, they're not a friend, and they care as much about consumer rights as any big entertainment industry, which is to say not at all. They're a business, and they'll do whatever it takes to save their company and reach profit. If that means waiting this backlash out and telling you to go fuck yourself later on, consider yourself already told. This is a company that tried to put crazy DRM on music CDs.

Sony says and shows a lot of things:

EA is killing their online passes across the board, they wouldn't do that without a good reason. Some kind of anti used tech is definitely there.

Will Sony use it,that remains to be seen.

As someone who mostly play exclusives, third-party DRM isn't that big of a deal. Games from Activision, EA, and Ubisoft might sell well, but most of them are boring as fuck. Smaller publishers aren't going to create their own DRM systems.

Agreed.  But Sony did roll out games with online passes, so its not above this muck.

If it were up to the publisher, I'd say Activision would be the least dickish of the three.  Activision uses standard Steamworks (no Origin or Uplay shit), doesn't use online passes, doesn't have in app purchases and free to play shit in $60 games, etc.

But things can always change.

edit:

Sony's conference will be very interesting.  You know it's going to start with a montage of some sort, but what then? come out and explain the DRM plan, good or bad, to get it out of the way? that's what everyone wants to know...that and what the black box looks like.  If they don't get it out of the way, the entire conference people will be preoccupied wondering about the DRM.  Or if it is bad news, do they show a bunch of cool games first and save the bad news for last.

At least Microsoft aired all the DRM stank before E3.  It's all uphill from here, folks! (unless it's kinect game after kinect game).

Considering Sony's past history, expect them to tap dance around the DRM thing for as long as possible.  I would be highly surprised if they mention it in their presentation at all, and fully expect them to continue offering vague responses about it when asked directly.

Activision,EA and Ubisoft are supposedly fully behind this DRM push.

If there is anything that deserves to be named bone then this is the one.Almost every business decision that has been made is for the benefit of multi-billion dollar corporations.

1.Can give "my" game to just one friend...secondary market destroyed,Gamestop pleased(for the time being)
2.Publisher gets control over used game market...publisher pleased

Destroying the second hand market is going to hurt this industry in a bad way.

Games will get less exposure, people that can only afford used games will opt out of gaming on consoles, people that fund new games by selling old ones will slow down with their purchases or opt out too.

I think I read somewhere that a game like Heavy Rain sold 2 million copies, but 3 million people have trophies for it. Now that 1 million people might not be in the market for a 60 euro game, they might only spend 30 euro on it second hand or 15, or just borrow it from a friend. But when options like this will disappear they might just quit gaming and then stop spending what they do. Stop reading gaming sites. The trickle down effect of what MS is doing will be HUGE if the xbone gets any traction.

Not every company is out to fuck you. Plenty of companies have sustainable policies that take other factors than short-term profit into account. The used market in Japan is huge since they don't allow rentals and Sony know better than to completely block it. I'm expecting them to continue with online passes. That patent that recognizes if the disc has been used before would be perfect for removing the physical code slip in every game case. People who buy the game used and want to play the multiplayer can cough up another $10-15.

I didn't say they're specifically out to fuck you, I just said they don't care if fucking you is a by-product of their company goals.

I don't think it's the case with Sony, but many companies care about having pleased long-term customers. You can be successful without being greedy assholes.

Yeah I kind of double-took at that.  Sony's games are leading in what, exactly?  Apathy?  Mediocre sales?

Sony has better games because gamers want to cry about the xbone.  This isn't that complicated.  Himu has become basically the Bore's worst poster in the past couple of months.

Sony has better games which I'm not indulging nor am I not talking about on this board. All signs point to ps4 having a more appealing lineup for me. The day I'll be able to post a :patel will feel good. Hopefully it is tomorrow.

I hope Sony comes hard with smaller, more experimental stuff like echochrome and tokyo jungle. I'm expecting more standard sizzle reel fare though, at least for the PS4. Maybe they can be a bit cooky with the PS3 if they are transitioning attention over to the next generation for their big stuff.

Amazing!
I've been following this thread but haven't commented until now.  As a little background, I own all currently available systems.  I usually buy games new if I can.  I don't care which system they're on.  I haven't used any of the XBL Gold features in about a year and a half.  I got a PS Plus membership about seven months ago.  While most of the games you get for free are garbage, it's a fantastic deal for the handful of great games you do get.  I prefer the 360 controller, but prefer the PS3 UI.  With the exception of Vita games, I generally prefer to buy physical media when it's available.

I'm not so butthurt about not being able to sell (or even share) games on the Xbox One.  I don't get to do that with iTunes and haven't really complained about that.  I'm not even so upset about the fact that I might have to initially connect to the internet to play a game.  What pisses me off though is the thought of having to subsequently and frequently connect to MS (or Sony's) servers to authenticate a license in order to play.  We heard the phrase "future proof" thrown around by Sony at the start of the last generation.  Whatever they meant by it then, at least I can say that as long as the physical components of my 360, Wii (U), and PS3 function, those consoles will remain future proof for the vast majority of games.  I'll never need an online connection to play 99% of the games for those systems.  In that sense, they are future proof, as are all the consoles that came before them.  But by it's very design, we now know the Xbox One will not be future proof.  There will come a day when I can't play them anymore.  And I'm not even just talking about twenty years from now when MS finally shuts down the servers.  Xbox One has now made itself a target for malicious hackers.  48 hours of their servers being down will effectively make every Xbox One an overpriced blu-ray player.  THAT's what makes me not interested in the console.

Also, my boyfriend and I have had issues with MS before.  My boyfriend's XBL account was hacked a couple years ago and MS has to this day not been willing to allow him to reactivate it other than by sending him an email to an account that he no longer has access to.  Back when Phantasy Star Universe (PSU) was still relatively new, I let my PSU monthly license expire when my credit card expired... OR SO I THOUGHT!  MS continued to charge me for four months after my card expired and after I no longer played (there was no way to cancel the PSU charges online).  They turned my XBL account over to collections.  I eventually had to pay them for the PSU months I had played, but they had already cancelled my XBL account FOREVER.  No one at MS could authorize my account to be reactivated.  Everything was lost.  Both my boyfriend and I were highly put out by these issues, but at least we were able to continue to play the games we had previously purchased.  Under the Xbox One system, both of these situations could effectively deny us access to all the games we'd purchased, especially if we end up having to migrate accounts to a new SKU or replacement hardware.

I can see Sony implementing or allowing slightly more restrictive DRM than what we see on this current gen.  But as the company that experienced 24 consecutive days of outage in their own online service in 2011, I think it would be suicide for them to implement DRM of the type MS has in store for us.

When all is said and done, if there's a game (or enough games) that I want to play on XboxOne that I can't get anywhere else I may buy one eventually.  I'm not so much interested in boycotting them as just... well, I'm just not interested.  I won't buy at launch.  If Sony has similar DRM, I'll lose interest in PS4 too.

For me, this next gen is looking like a great time to catch up on the backlog of awesome current gen games I still haven't gotten around to playing.

Yup. Same here, so far. Nothing compelling.

My favorite entry in this thread so far was the Mega64 video which flipped between rumors from 1999 and 2013.

So much for "consumer facing"!

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-xbox-one-memory-better-in-production-hardware

Quote
Well-placed development sources have told Digital Foundry that the ESRAM embedded memory within the Xbox One processor is considerably more capable than Microsoft envisaged during pre-production of the console, with data throughput levels up to 88 per cent higher in the final hardware.

Bandwidth is at a premium in the Xbox One owing to the slower DDR3 memory employed in the console, which does not compare favourably to the 8GB unified pool of GDDR5 in the PlayStation 4. The 32MB of "embedded static RAM" within the Xbox One processor aims to make up the difference, and was previously thought to sustain a peak theoretical throughput of 102GB/s - useful, but still some way behind the 176GB/s found in PlayStation 4's RAM set-up. Now that close-to-final silicon is available, Microsoft has revised its own figures upwards significantly, telling developers that 192GB/s is now theoretically possible.
