is this where we brag about how few of our steam games we've played without fear of being laughed at for our poor financial sense?

It was still under warranty and I'm getting it RMAd.  :rock

In the meantime, I'll just have to play the dozens of classics from GOG.

We pc gamers have to budget appropriately, we get everything for so much cheaper since we don't pay the console idiot tax.  Please understand.

Oh look a 'platform' (lol barely) thats only able to receive high production/fidelity efforts because it was always subsidized by console software sales in the first place.  But sure keep laughing it up while you're oblivious.

This is the 1st gen that consoles have failed to show anything at launch that look more impressive than coexisting PC games. :fbm

It was kinda fun to see what developers could do with inferior specs by "coding to the metal" but those days seem to be over.

Even a $300 670 is going to knock the pants off a PS4 in raw specs. And that's about to be replaced by an even better 770.

5 years from now you'll be able to pick up a 670 for $150 or less.

Real talk- between Grim Dawn, the new Obsidian game and the new "Torment" plus the shit I've never bothered to dl, I could give two shits about any game not named "Saints Row IV"

Further real talk- awesome content like Blood Dragon that is a throw away "iteration" rather than "innovation" is right up my alley and will be available for el cheapo.  I will never understand why you dumb fuckers are happy to pay top dollar for shitty product.  There are very few games that I would bother feeling like I HAVE to have right on release.  Maybe this means I'm old and not as big a part of the hobby anymore; so be it.  At least I don't validate myself through a bunch of dumb fucking games.

I still like me some AAA games, but...not as much as I used to. I just don't get excited nearly as often by glitzy first-person shooters with blahblahblah visceral combat and rollercoasters. There are currently more games I'm incredibly excited about coming out soon through Kickstarter [which would mean games with budgets at $4 million and below] than games that cost $20 million or more. I honestly can't even think of any AAA games outside of Saints Row 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5 that I'm remotely interested in. Everything else is just "Well, maybe I'll see if it's good and then pick it up for $20 or less on Steam".

For me, AAA has come to mean bloated budget and copy/pasta design, along with needless focus on elements that barely improve the play experience.

Subsidised or not who cares.

I have a huge list of games I still want to buy and play for sub 5/10 euro. Not to mention all the games I have already and that are still coming out.

Plus if the industry died tomorrow wed still get stuff like Grim Dawn etc.

mmhmm

AAA games bring people to the platform.  those people then purchase smaller titles between the AAA titles, which makes making those smaller titles viable.  AAA disappears, fewer people buying games on the platform, small games become fewer and smaller.

but none of this affects anyone because we're all so fucking cool

I think I would get more enjoyment out of watching people's reactions to the death of video games than I would out of any video games I would hypothetically be missing out on.

Well, we're getting closer and closer to a point where onboard video will be equal to or slightly better than 360/PS3 quality, and once the average joe doesn't have to think about slotting in a card and buying a bigger PSU for his off-the-shelf desktop or buying a $900 laptop just to play a particular game, I believe there'll be a bit of resurgence for PC gaming in general. We'd still get things like the first Witcher game even if AAA console gaming took a shit, I think.

sure at first, but this doesn't dissipate the PC fanbase.   There are plenty of people who aren't hooked to AAA tits and who would fund more medium-sized projects through kickstarter or other avenues.  Look how fast a lot of projects get funding...if these kickstarter projects turn out as awesome as pitched, it'll build momentum for that kind of crowd-sourced funding.

I can't be arsed to argue this seriously, but I will point out that the biggest games on the PC aren't AAA console ports. Granted, those are also the kinds of games a lot of people play to the exclusion of a lot of other shit, but it does mean that PC gaming doesn't live and die by the console market's table scraps.

The neat thing is that I'm dead sure we'll get the chance to see if my hunches pan out.  Not that any of us will still be posting here at that point, if god has any mercy whatsoever

What impact would a loss [or, more likely, merely a drop] in AAA games have on smaller games being funded through Kickstarter? Because that's pretty much all I care about these days.

Are you looking at all this from a pretty long term perspective?  lets say, like 20 years from now?  In that case, sure, I agree the landscape will change in that time and that how we have it now might not be the norm 20 years from now.  but we've only seen more avenues for game development + publishing opening up, which can take place of a waning traditional developer+big publisher set up...so I don't see how PC gaming is super threatened by people losing interest in console games.

like, if Bioshock Infinite flopped, what would that mean for PC gaming?   Take Two isn't taking Bioshock money and putting it into interesting PC projects.  It just goes towards their next console game, which might also be on PC.  Extrapolate that to any console production that gets a PC port.  These publishers put games out on PC incidentally, while crowd-funding and indie stuff will only improve.   Some pretty big kickstarter projects got funding with ease, so it's not like the interest isn't there.  But the first wave better deliver...

But wouldn't the death of AAA console gaming actually push more people to things like PC and Kickstarter? Of course, it would also push people to mobile gaming and out of games entirely. But the main reason I got interested in Kickstarter in the first place was a AAA games industry that was increasingly failing to cater to my interests with its $50+ million games, while Kickstarter promised to make exactly the kinds of games that I wanted. And developers are already proving that they can do really great things with just a sliver of what the AAA market is using.

The biggest PC games are freemium, multiplayer focused and have a fraction of the development costs of a typical 8 hour AAA corridor shooter.

Indies also seem to do fine (assuming your name is Notch or you hit the Steam lottery)

It would suck losing console scraps, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Whats all this future doom and gloom i got plenty shit to play now and in the coming years guaranteed.

Thats all that really counts.

All these magic 8ball predictions of where the industry will be in 15 years are pointless, no one here knew that mobile and freemium would blow up 15 years ago either. So things might and will change again with new disruptors. We just dont know.

PC gaming will decline to the lowest common denominator (basically, the state of Intel/AMD's APUs), AAA budgets will implode for all but the biggest games like Call of Duty.

MS will try to turn Windows into a "service model" always online walled garden, causing most hardcore nerds to flee to Linux.

Samsung/Apple will come out with an official controller attachment to their phones and continue to eat up console sales. Nintendo might hang on with their portables but will be forced to give up the console race.

Once things become 'difficult' or even just if you put a small hurdle in front of the masses, they're going to run for the iOS hills faster than you can say there's an app for that. You have too much faith in the modern convenience-is-everything human's willingness to work for things they want =P

The solution is a combination of mobile and console. Nintendo was kinda on the right track with Wii U but missed the target, I think. I feel like today's console should ideally be something you can take anywhere and then stream the footage to your tv or even hook it up. Basically, since none of the big three are capable of putting out a big tablet - Sony and MS' tablets have bombed, and Nintendo will never release a tablet - they aren't going to win people over because people aren't going to replace their ipads and galaxy tabs and shit.

My idea for years has been something you carry with you everywhere, like a phone, you can play a game on the train or at work, and you get home, you hook that bad boy up to your tv and keep on playing, this time with a controller. It's clearly where we're going, and yet none of the consoles are quite there yet.

as per Momo - PSP Go running CFW for the moment though more as an emu box. Mine has everything of note legacy wise (Mame is a bit shit, but FBA isnt bad and MVS and CP1/2 are both very good) plus PS1 and PSP stuff.

Rock it on the TV with a linked Dual Shock , then stick it in my pocket for on-the-go mega library.

Now if only we could get an unlocked vita and tv out - then we really would be rocking it.

sure, but not on a mass scale. the problem with that is that you need a psp and vita to even do it. two things most consumers DON'T have.

Speak for your own nation - PSP is alive and kicking here. Vita is in a possible persistent vitative state - its still smiling at relatives but people aren't getting much out of it

Anyways - A hacked PSP Go is the gift that keeps giving.
