Aughts Action Movie Nostalgia Thread
« on: May 27, 2013, 02:26:46 AM »
Fast 6 has opened my eyes, brehs. 80's nostalgia is played out. You seen one action movie full of 70 year old steroid abusers, you seen 'em all. 90's nostalgia? Meh, all the best 90's action movies were just running on Arnold & Sly's 80's fumes. You want real 90's? 3 Ninjas Kick Back Again and Thunder in Paradise, that was the 90's. All the 90's really had going for a was a good economy, a lack of wars, and an unblown up WTC. Let's get nostalgic for the 00's, man. A sleek, glossy, CG fueled decade, when the entire cast of Predator became governors, Jason Statham, Vin Diesel, The Rock, and somehow Matt Damon became action stars, and Wesley Snipes wasn't in jail yet.

First on the agenda:

Watched xXx tonight. I saw it in the theater back in 2002 and about the only thing I remembered was Vin Diesel ramping off a bridge in a Corvette and the Rammstein concert. I'd forgotten that it was supposed to be "James Bond XXXtreme!" It opens with the stuffy british agent getting killed, then it's like "Time for a new breed of secret agent, XXXander Cage! He plays Playstation and has a popular Youtube channel!" He's still got an M, a Q that makes him gadgets, a Bond Girl, a Bond Car with flamethrowers and rocket launchers, and a Bond Villain with a doomsday device, though. Still, it's way better than Die Another Day, that's for sure. It's not Fast 5 good or anything, but it's alright.

"Bitches, come!"

I have to say that by having Point Break and Cliffhanger, the 90s wins though. The latter half of that decade was pretty great too, with Speed, Con Air, The Rock and Face/Off.

Just the other day I watched Mission Impossible 2.  The incoherent plot and ridiculous kicks make it the metal gear movie that never was.  Cruise literally flash kicks a dude as doves fly around him.

and I first watched xXx in theaters, too.  my favorite line is "stop thinking police and start thinking playstation!"

00's was horrible for hollywood action flicks. What are you smoking Joe? I think the best Hollywood action movie of the aughts was Kill Bill 1.

This thread may possibly be slightly tongue-in-cheek.  :P I'm just trying to get some conversation going here. Talking about 80 and 90's action movies is boring because we've all done that before. With the 00's, you gotta dig down deep to find that gold (or lack thereof). It makes it more interesting.

Taken is from this decade so it's a pretty awesome decade.

So is IP man if we count martial arts movies.

What else was awesome from this decade? The Marine, Cowboy Bebop The movie, The Shitty Matrix Sequels(still had some good action scenes), SHOOT EM UP!, Rambo, The Transporter movies, Punisher Warzone maybe?, The District B13 MOVIES(I mean the sequel is pretty over the top), Gamer(which is still the best representation of the internet), Merantau(the raid 0 basically), Redbelt, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Battle Royale(hey I like it) and I'm sure some other stuff like Ong Back was good, I don't know never saw it.

Point is, this decade was pretty awesome. Fuck Gun Kata with Equilibrium! is from the 00s.

Let's not forget Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Green Destiny) (2000). The movie was wonderful. I spent most of it realizing how easily it could be adapted to a Star Wars story, awkward politics and all, and how much better it would have been than the SW Prequels. Just magnificent.

Bless your heart, GR, for bringing up Bourne. The series which not only made spy movies exciting again, but inspired the reinvention of Bond which allowed for Casino Royale.

And I know we're not doing superheros, but Blade II needs mentioning for introducing Del Toro to the mainstream.

Japan managed to turn out both Versus and Battle Royale.

Himuro was a better poster than Hermuro, right? Or am I imagining it?
It's not your imagination. Ms. Himumu is much more fond of stating hir opinions as indisputable facts, is quicker to label others and call names, and much faster to take umbrage when the same is done to hir, even in retaliation. I'm done with it. No one else seems interested or willing to call Himumu on hir bullshit (except for The Business; thanks, boo), and if it's stinking up the place, I'm doubly done.

S/He's on Ignore, and my outlook is again placid. Pretty sure I'm on hir Ignore list as well, so it's likely over until one of us is foolishly optimistic enough to lift the ban.
