Resident Evil 3
« on: June 01, 2013, 09:13:44 PM »
Ok, this game is making me it's whiny bitch.  I'm on hard mode, but the only other option was easy.  Was easy actually normal mode?  Cause Jeel dies in like 6 hits and there's a lot of seemingly unavoidable damage in this game (speedy zombies can suck my balls.)

What am I missing...the dodge seems unpredictable, but also the only way to dodge guaranteed damage in many situations.  I keep on getting to sections where I need to reset over and over just to do it perfectly, so I can conserve healing items.   I've also decided to try beating Nemesis for some gun parts and yeah, rocket to the face and I'm dead.

Am I just a pussy, unskilled, is it a game where you need some luck?  All of the above?

I love everything about it otherwise, but all this resetting is getting dumb.

from what I understand, every "classic" Resident Evil game features a lot of resetting

RE1 and 2 were cake though...less than a handful of deaths and resets. This one is pretty nutty.

It always sucked getting half-way through an RE game and ending up with no health, no ammo, and being nut deep in zombies.

I honestly can't speak to it. I'm a noob to the series and what little I've played of the first PS1 game had me resetting a few times, and when I tried to play REmake... it was all resets.

the game ain't even that hard; suck it up son. you'll never get thru the mercenaries mode at this rate. practice the dodge on nemesis a few times, kill all the monsters, and kill most of the zombies n you'll be fine.

This. The only thing Easy gives you is the 100% ammo Assault Rifle at the start, something you shouldn't need (because it doesn't give you more ammo until late game) anyway.

The game is easy. Drop your aim-stance when you're about to have zombies in your face. 180 quickturn (run and back on D-pad) and haul ass the other direction to gain space.

Neme-baby is dodge-able by running past his LEFT side. You shouldn't EVER fight him until you get good at the game (so don't worry) even if the rewards are worth it. You'll just be blowing ammo and health if you do. Edit: There is one mandatory fight with him, but it's obvious when you reach it what that point is. So uh... save when you get to the clock-tower in a separate slot as a precaution.

Also every RE (well 0-3/CVX anyway) is a "6-hit" death system. You're supposed to get the shotgun/magnum and stockpile ammo while avoiding most enemies to not get hit THEN blow through the rest of the game with your stockpiled ammo. You should be able to reach the Police Station from your new-game with little to no damage done to you once you get used to movement and the area. By then (provided you know where drops are) you should have enough pistol ammo to pick off a few enemies that bother you in high-traffic (backtracking, so don't really do this in the police station) areas.

the only classic RE I never made any headway in, probably because the ammo system is kinda nuts and tremendously strains your already limited inventory.
So I'm giving out mad props to anybody who did beat this, I hope to join you guys before the year 2030.

Edit:  give me some tips on missile dodging.

edit 2: I'm at the part where you use the hose, go into the office, get the oil in the back, then get invaded by zombies.   I was trying to kill Nemesis in the fight after that, which was making me cry, but it'll be really easy to run past if I don't fight him, which I guess I won't.

Of all the RE's though, this one has had me thinking about a replay the most.  even RE4.

uh dont fight him unless you have to. you just dont have enough ammo. you can do it on replays when you have super weapons unlocked, but otherwise its definitely not worth it. he doesnt even stay down; he'll be back a few screen later and i think he even gets up if you hang around too long on the screen where you took him down.

this game has the best replay value because just like 1 you can visit areas in a different order to get different scenarios. between that and the times when you're forced to make a choice you can do a decent job of switching it up on replays. you're not gonna get new levels or anything, but it makes it more fun to try and find new stuff to do instead of going down the same path over and over.

I thought he dropped stuff when you kill him?   I've knocked him down and he gets back up, but I thought I just needed to drop him again to get the parts.

oh yeah doesnt he give you parts for a super gun? you dont need to try for that on your first playthru, especially if you cant even dodge attacks yet.

according to gamefaqs, he gives different parts every time you kill him?

The ammo system was awesome.

If you mix A/B like 6 times it'll give you way more handgun/shotgun ammo than you need.

But the true power of that system is mixing A/B together to get C gunpowder and then mix that to get a shitload of Freeze-rounds for the Grenade Launcher. Once you have those Nemesis becomes pretty trivial.

(And I lied, I just remembered another mandatory Nemesis fight and that one is timed, but if you have freeze-rounds at that point you should be pretty safe to get past it)

Edit 3: Okay, there's three mandatory Nemesis battles, but they're super obvious when you can't run away and thus have to battle him.

according to gamefaqs, he gives different parts every time you kill him?

Yes, but until you do the Mercenaries grind to 999999$ to get the Infinite Ammo reward to slap on your shotgun/Magnum it isn't worth doing that. While he gives you a powerful Handgun (the first two battles) and the Terminator 2 1887-style sawed-off shotgun, they aren't really needed to beat the game.

He'll also give you ONE infinite ammo box like the Merc mini-game does, but you have to beat him like 8 times to get that.

I see now!

They give you parts if you hide from him in the office, so I took that as "yeah, you should try to kill him so you can get more parts"

yeah, other than these snags, I love the game when it's flowing.

Run past him. If you zig-zag he won't hit you with rockets. Get to the save-room. Exit save room, go to trash/utility area->down-town->run through the newspaper ally. By that point he shouldn't be chasing you anymore

until the next room with the train car hallway

Added bonus of him destroying zombies if you run past all of them and they're in his way/get hit with rockets.

yeah, I can escape just fine, i've been doing that with every encounter with him until now...i'm not that bad at the game. :p  it was trying to kill him that was the problem, since that meant I had to play everything leading up to that near perfectly.  you can see where the problem was-- there's a lot that can go wrong before that encounter with him, after you put out the fire.   The bug things can get a hit in, the zombies that invade the Umbrella office are often the speedy kinds.  there's one waiting right at the door as you try to leave the office that randomly has super speed.  It's a mess.

but it'll be fine now since i'm not trying to kill him.

For the Umbrella office bit, you can lead the zombies to the back, equip a handgun and R2 (or whatever on PC/anything not PSX) and shoot the valves to save ammo and time in killing them. There's like 2-3 valves if you play your cards right it'll kill them all.

The Drain Deimos are a pain in the ass, yeah. Probably one of the more annoying enemies in the game.

But yeah, if you run into problems try mixing gunpowder or something or just running straight through (which, ironically RE6 also allows pretty much).

Same. I beat it with Mikihail (I can't spell his name, it's Russian) with all the survivors. Carlos without all the survivors (picking and choosing and not going out of my way since it could also waste time).

Nicholi is the only one I haven't ever beaten that mode with. 3's Merc's curbstomps 4-5-6's Merc's alone because of that damn character.

Nah, I think Tofu may be slightly easier (that's one I've struggled with as well) mostly because it isn't timed. Nicholai  is pretty intense with the time limit. Double-so if you're going to rescue people.

Though, the Japanese are the insane ones that have completed it.
