Expeditions: Conquistador is a tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence.

You will take on the role of a Spanish Conquistador in South America around 1520. Select the members of your expedition and explore campaign maps based on the actual topological maps of Hispaniola and Mexico. Through intricately branching dialogue, you will engage with the characters and situations that you encounter across these uncharted areas, and when it’s time to spill blood, a tactical combat system of great depth and brutality will let you control your individual troops in battle.

Combat is intimate and detailed, and failure has great consequences. Every expedition member has a face, a past, a set of personality traits, and of course a combat role – their morale will change depending on your decisions, they will chime in when you’re weighing your options, and if they fall in battle, their injuries will carry over to the world map, where they must be treated by your doctors until they’re back on their feet. Should you fail to treat your expedition members, they will die and be gone for good.

Choice and consequence is central to the play experience of Conquistador. As the leader of the expedition, you will face difficult decisions about the use of your troops and your resources, as well as how to engage with the factions of the savage New World. Will you defy history and be a diplomatic envoy of peace? Or will you be a ruthless conqueror determined to lay all of the Aztec Empire at your feet?

Praise for Expeditions: Conquistador:

Completed the game on insane.  I thought the game was awesome.   But playing with the Aztecs is like cheating.  They are so much more powerful than the spanish versions due to thier skills.

I've only played a bit of the tutorial since I had about 20 minutes of free time, but I really like what it's doing so far.

I'm really loving this game. It's instantly familiar to anyone who's played Heroes of Might & Magic or King's Bounty, but it adds in more personality, more quests, and some randomized events along the way.

One of the big difference is how your party is handled. Each member is a unique character with their own personality and backstory, rather than just faceless soldiers that you replace whenever they get killed. Each member of your army can be upgraded through the use of pooled experience points or new equipment purchased in town.

Towns and villages scattered throughout the world offer you quests, with rewards coming in the form of money generally [which you need to by daily rations for your troops and other things]. It gives you a reason to explore the hidden corners of the world.

There's a lot of dialogue in this game both from people you meet along the way and with your own party. It's not a huge thing, but it definitely adds to the overall experience.

Everything's a bit gray here, story-wise. The people you're working for aren't always altruists and the people you're coming up against aren't always blood-thirsty villains. Part of that is the historical context, with you playing a Spanish conquistador and often having to work with a loathsome local governor. But it all comes down to how you want to handle each situation, the game doesn't seem to push any one play style over another.

The combat is a little too standard, unfortunately. King's Bounty was great in this regard, giving you all kinds of crazy units and letting the main character directly affect the battle through the use of magic spells. Not the case, here, unfortunately. You get melee fighters, archers/riflemen, and healers. And you're fighting pretty much the same kinds of units. Some of that's just the nature of the setting, though, crazy fantasy world versus early 16th century Hispaniola.

My only other complaint so far is that you can't pull back the camera very far in the main field, sometimes making it difficult to see what all is nearby.

But again, I'm really enjoying this game. It's well worth $15 [or $20].

So it's turn based? Will definitely pick this up when I get back from my Murica trip

Combat is turn-based on a hex-grid. Exploring is free-roaming in an open world with a set amount of movement per "day," after which point you have to camp for the night [and feed your party].

You can't play as the Aztecs. For now, at least, you can only play as Spanish conquistadors.
