I keep hoping for a good Nerf game to play with my kids, so I can have all the shooty but none of the gore.

I tend to like them also and I kinda hope this turns out as a good game. We'll see. Popcap hasn't done a lot recently to inspire confidence but I think there is enough here to be an interesting game.

This is pretty fun so far! Really easy to pick up and play. It's basically BF mixed with TF2. I can see with the sticker packs where there's a prime opportunity for EA to microtransaction the shit out of it, though :lol

Yeah I feel the same way. It's really fun and a nice complement/change of pace from Battlefield which makes me rage a lot. I kind of had a goofy grin on my face the whole time I was playing this.

There are some interesting elements that I didn't know about. Like the sticker pack stuff is actually really cool. This game has an AI bot system like Titanfall but here it makes more sense and has been incorporated into the game in a unique way. You earn credits. Which allow you to buy the sticker packs. The sticker packs give you customization options but more importantly it gives you these AI bots. There are certain parts of the map on both sides where the zombies and the plants can each redeem them and put out AI bots of varying strengths that will follow and support you into battle. It's actually a real cool idea. And if EA didn't put in the eventual pay to buy these packs you know they will, it would be a really cool feature that nobody would diss. It's a way to implement some of the creatures you play with in the tower defense games without having them be overpowered or having to develop full classes for them.

I have no regrets about buying this at the moment which kind of surprised me. It actually uses the universe of Plants and Zombies very well.

The party stuff still sucks on xbox one though. I guess we'll have to wait for the Titanfall update to make this work as a party game. Also the server side stuff seems sketchy like Battlefield. Like sometimes I fail to join games.

Played my first little bit this morning. I liked what I was able to play, but am not so thrilled about connectivity:
  • Got into first match -- which was a horde mode thing, in-progress. Pretty nifty, and I'm immediately in the action -- didn't see a tutorial on the way in, and there are no "Use L-stick to move... Use R-stick to look around!" sequences. Not knowing that self-revives are a limited resource, I die, the team dies, we fail the mode.
  • Second game in same lobby, I'm unable to move in the match; my position keeps resetting, so I appear to have some connectivity issues. I quit out.
  • Rejoining apparently the same match, things work correctly, and I'm ALL OVER THE PLACE! It looks like I go from level 1 to 4 in one match, but the UI is bizzy as hell, so I am not sure. Connectivity issues occur, and I'm dropped back to the main menu. I'm level 2; not sure if I lost XP and Challenges or not.
  • Trying to join another match, get stuck in Loading screen, drop to main menu.Dropping to main menu, I'm stuck on the Canceling Matchmaking alert for 10 minutes.

It is fun when it works. Shooting feels good, but stressful with the pea shooter -- I feel like I'm reloading/recharging frequently, and I'm never sure when it's going to happen. There's probably UI for it, but I haven't recognized it.

It feels like a PvZ game, somehow. I mean, audio/visual branding-wise, it's there. I mean that as a compliment: mission accomplished.

I hope it sells well; a multiplayer only game without players is pretty definitively worthless.

So, I know that I don't know much about this kind of game. I didn't know that Gardens and Graveyards is a base-capture mode. After completing one as Plants, I still don't understand how Zombies capture the garden; is it damage to the garden, or occupying its central space?

I absolutely love the Topps-styled "bubblegum cards" for unlocks. This is just hammering on one of my weak spots: nostalgic, random, collectible cards, and I'm surprised there isn't already a IAP option for purchasing more coins. I'm happy there isn't one; I like that (so far) it's a method for unlocking Player Classes beyond the basic ones. Though on the other hand I wish it were a bit more random, and that cards had some method for trading them. I mean, the Player Class stickers are never going to give me the same sticker, right? It will increment the sticker to include the next unlockable.

There are some peeps who have been playing this A LOT, apparently. I mean, I suck and all that, but there are already players at Level 30, with completely customized in-game characters no matter what Class they're playing, whereas I've received all of three items total.

For every objective except the last one its having more people in the capture point. And the more you have the faster it goes up. That's what the numbers at the top of the screen represent. If you have 1 guy in there and they have none. The capture meter will start to increase. If you have 1 and they have 1 or more. The capture meter doesn't move.  So you always need more people on your team in the capture area to move the meter than the opposing team has in the capture area. The last objective however is unique depending on the map.

You get credits a lot faster in Gardens Ops and Graveyards and Gardens.

I like how it will feed Players in to a match in progress; I was having a miserable time in a 2-on-1 PvP match, where it was the best player in the previous match and one other guy against me; by the end of it, there were 6 or 7 on each team. We still lost, but at least I wasn't being  mercilessly, repeatedly slaughtered.

I've been playing this, but discovered a downside: because it's plants and cartoon zombies and the word "kill" doesn't even appear in the game, my 9-year-old son can play it. He has never played anything like this before, and never played anything competitively. He's been raised on Pokémon and, more recently, Monster Hunter.  He wants to play round robin style: he dies, I take a turn; I die, he takes the controller for a turn. It should be a blast, but he's so bad at this that I can't even watch him play without barking orders at him. I feel like a total jerk for not letting him play and learn on his own. This is definitely on me and not on him. I like that he's into it!

I'm glad you can laugh; I want to laugh at myself a little bit there as well. I mean, he LOVES it. I only let him play Team Vanquish, because he can be 1/16th of the problem instead of 1/4th of the cause of losing in Garden Ops. And he wants to play the more difficult classes, like Chomper, though he doesn't use burrowing, and only goops zombies once in a long while. The worst is when he's just standing around, and I can see the fight from where I am, and know that he could be creeping up on any of the actively engaged players, but he's just hanging way back with his close-quarters character.

AWEZOMB!

Free is good. I knew they'd come out with Map Packs, but I was worried they'd charge for them, and make it harder to find an active match by splitting their player base through paid content. I'm stoked that it's free! Not just for my wallet, but because everyone will be access it.

I felt like the character design was so spot-on, toys had to be coming. I hope there are ways to get customization pieces easily. More likely I will end up buying Fimo.

EXCELLENT!

I love how this game has produced a heap of free DLC to keep the game fresh, without putting it behind a paywall and splintering the player base.

...I'm pretty sure I said that earlier in this thread, but I'm a tottering old man today, in need of caffeine and perhaps some Depends sanitary undergarments.

I wish EA'd put that music track up for grabs. That's a pretty slick Morricone imitation.

You know what else I like about this game? It's difficult to get too bent out of shape about it. It's easier to take it all Way Less Seriously.

Yeah, I know I'd posted earlier about how hard it is to watch my son play this game badly; I'm mainly talking about feeling angry, cheated, or a need for revenge. It is exhilarating without enraging.

Agreed. I wish this would somehow become the norm but you know even EA won't continue to do this in the future.
So you think they'll be adding paid DLC maps in the future? I am beginning to think they'll just allow sticker-pack purchases.

They did it with Mass Effect 3's multiplayer mode. Kept me and a friend playing for months.
