Andy, I don't think the majority of people (here and elsewhere) are upset about DKC2 existing, just that Retro is behind it. That's even more justified considering all the rumors and speculations... that were admittedly mostly made up.

Really? I thought we heard two years ago they were doing DKCR2?

Most of the recent talks were that they were working on something brand new. Also, it really seems like you haven't followed this bit of controversy at all. Maybe two years ago there was speculation that Retro would make another Donkey Kong Country game, but since last E3, the only thing we've known is that they have a title in the works and nobody knew what it was.

Holy shit at all the people shitting on DKC2. GTFO you philistines. Game looks AWESOME. Probably the best and freshest feeling non-X game they showed.

It's just not what the console needs right now. It's not a system seller. Further, it's a crowded genre. We got New Super Mario last November, New Super Luigi is coming out soon, there's Rayman coming in September, and on the 3D platformer front, we've got 3D Mario in December, and an exclusive 3D Sonic platformer coming out as well. This game may well be really fun, but it's not going to put asses in the seats during a time when Nintendo desperately needs some reason for people to be excited about this machine. Donkey Kong Country is not the Retro game I wanted Nintendo to have as their flagship title to compete against new hardware launches.

The last donkey kong was retro's largest seller ever, and I'm not convinced that Nintendo has any ideas as groundbreaking as CoD4 was to rope in a new crowd of consumers.  Realistically, if we were talking about retro being put to task of making the console relevant, it would be developing something like Wii Sports ala what Rare has been marginalized to these days.

I'm not necessarily speaking about the best move just in terms of Retro selling software in as much as I think they could have been put to quelling some of the hardware concerns. I think if anything was going to make this console not look outdated compared to the Xbox One and PS4 this holiday season, there was hope that it would be Retro's mystery project. Maybe it wouldn't have sold as well as Donkey Kong Country, but I honestly think the Retro could have done more good for the platform's image with something like a Metroid Prime 4. As is, all they can hang their hat on is "remember the nice things the guy from Criterion said about the system" and "hey, X will come out sometime next year."

and I still don't think consumers share this attitude of performance inadequacy.  It doesn't inform their purchase.  See Wii.  The Wii U's problem is that it doesn't have an entcing gimmick and/or the desirable software to catch their attention.  Software/hardware pricing plays a more important role. Something like donkey kong is more likely to sell a wii u then whatever graphical showcase male empowerment fantasy retro could cook up, unless it was truly a phenomena akin to Monster Hunter in japan or CoD4 stateside.  I doubt they're capable of that with the original staff gone.

And publishers will never be convinced of the system's potential even if they did deliver a technical miracle.  They have plenty of reasons to ignore Nintendo for the 4th time in a row... wow is it really 4...

I really don't think Donkey Kong is going to do much of anything to move hardware. You mention that it sold more than Metroid, which is a fair point. But remember when New Super Mario Bros. sold five billion copies on the Wii and then its successor launched on the Wii U and the Wii U proceeded to sell like horse shit despite having a followup to a massively successful game from last generation? I don't see why Donkey Kong is going to be any different.

If the Wii U manages to have a big November, I only see that happening on the back of a big price cut or killer bundles. Not because consumers respond to another good 2D platformer releasing.

Im not saying its going to do gangbusters or move the watermark for WiiU monthly sales.  But of all the things retro could be doing, this has the best chance of being successful.

Now of course, I would love another Metroid Prime.  I would prefer it, but the reality isn't exactly the disaster everyone is making the decision out to be.

Uuuh so its ok to makes jokes about someones racial background (or sexual preferencae) but not about their relationship mishaps? that would never stand in a court of law.

X: are you stupid or just n**** f**
T: uuh you cant get laid
Judge: Wow Y you're so going to jail

NEVER EVER

Even though I still think you should fight pole jokes with canuck jokes, a general "you can't get laid" joke is more appropriate than "digging stuff from the relationship thread to make you look like an idiot." Don't be so contemptuous, breh. That's the opposite of joking around.

Maybe I would be more cool about it if it wasn't the same "joke" every single time. Hur dur I get it.

90% of this board is contemptuous towards me all the time, don't matter usually cause I'm just dicking around

But if you call me an idiot or try some racial slur you could get called out on your own things, so unless you want that better stick to the topic at hand.

If you play it ad hominem, don't be shocked if you get it back.

While I understand that the same joke over and over again can be tiring, don't you see the basic difference between a joke about someone's nationality and a joke about the life of a person? Unless you have too much national pride, only the latter one can be truly humilating.

Mario 2 does not suck. Take it back. It's better than 1 or 3. I have the same opinion I had in 1990. Mario 2 > 1 and3

I don't know. I think Mario 3d World looks great if you're a Mario fan. I mean, why would anyone expect more Galaxy? I don't even want a spiritual sequel or successor. We have two Galaxy games. It's good to go in a more classic direction, I think, because the chance they come up with anything that tops Galaxy is so fucking slim.

Warming up to 3DWorld.  Despite expecting a massive epic adventure like Galaxy, this looks really solid itself.  3DLand was really quite good despite being easy.  This could be to 3DLand what NSMBWii was to NSMB.  That is, a huuuuuuge upgrade in quality and design.

Really though, that EAD group hasn't made a single bad Mario game yet.  And I do sort of expect a big 3D Mario game again from them in a few years.

Since Wii U sales are in the shitter, knocking out a 3D Land Mario game is probably easier than a Galaxy Mario game.

We may see Mario Universe in 2015 if Nintendo hasn't abandoned the Wii U by then.
