UnEpic (Metroidvania side-scrolling RPG)

UnEpic:

This is a self described Metroidvania style game where you play as a guy who gets lost coming back from the bathroom to his DnD crew and ends up in a castle filled with traps, enemies, and stuff like that. From the looks of the video, it looks to be one of the better looking games in this genre that I've seen. It includes the ability write down descriptions on your map for later reference.

UnEpic is available in "early access" on Steam for 8 bucks.

Edit: Changing this thread to focus on UnEpic. I've played about 2 hours of it and I think it's great. It delivers a fairly large gameworld to explore. It has secret and optional quests that pushes the exploration even further. There's a RPG leveling system where you drop points into various stats. There's loot drops complete with color coding. There's some crafting mechanics as well.

It's a lot of fun! If you've been waiting for a game to come a long that will scratch your Metroidvania itch, this game def will.

Played about an hour of UnEpic

Game is really fun. It's quests, loot drops, super dumb poorly translated dialogue, pattern based bosses, plenty of space to explore and find secrets.

play it!

i have the rogue legacy demo installed on my pc but truth to be told i played very little of it,the most interessing part was the "heir" aspect so i purposedly killed myself multiple times so i could see what would happen bu it doesn't do much as the trait are mostly silly distraction than anything (one of the most noticeable one is being near sighted so stuff on the edge of the screen looks like a blurry mess) the most important thing is that when you die you can select between 3 different character and not only they come with different trait but they also come with different classes (there is a mage class for example which dies pretty quickly but get more use out of secondary weapon) and secondary weapon

unepic i have never played but isn't it supposed to be pretty old? what gives?

I believe it was in Greenlight for awhile but it released on the 13th in Early Access. Looks like it's just for the multiplayer. the Singleplayer is 100% finished.

Shame nobody really seems interested in either of these. UnEpic is really cool and does the Metroidvania style a lot better than a lot of recent games that claim the style.

i've decided to give a spin to unepic but since so far i don't have a lot of nice thing to say about it i've decided to keep my mouth shut :lol

yeah it gets the big castle part right, but the enviroment looks pretty dull, the combat boils down to stun locking everything (i've made a point of using the spear since it has a longer reach and thus let you hit without getting hit and i rarely take any damage) and of course there are "look at me! i'm indie!" citation everywhere too ("it works in legend of zelda!" says the MC in the intro,"this sage looks just like yoda!",etc)

the first boss really show the jank of the game,it has 2 attack one of which consist of slamming around the room leaving huge dead zone where you can twiddle your finger with no consequence happening,it's so easy gaibon and slogra feel like a proper boss in comparison, boss in question (spoiled in case fistful hasn't still seen it)

Any discussion is better than nothing!

I agree the combat is simple, but for me, the act of exploring the castle is the charm.

And I recommend, switch the language to UnEnglish. The references and the poor translation are hilarious when combined.

Same here. Right now I just don't have the time to add another new game to my backlog, and I'm already at my limit for spending on games for at least the next few weeks.

I tried the Rogue Legacy demo.  Controls aren't as crisp as I'd like, but the setup of Infinity Blade + Castlevania + Rogue (it's in the title..) is fresh.  For some reason I came away from it thinking about how much I'd want it on a handheld, like Vita or 3DS.  Seems like a game that you can pick up and play for a couple minutes, or until the current character dies.

Saw both on their Giantbomb quicklooks and they both look really interesting.

Loved the "Unenglish" language option in Unepic also  :lol :lol :lol
