My latest obsession since I tend to go on gaming tangents in certain genres, like say WRPG's but have lately gotten into Roguelikes, and Roguelike-likes. What are yalls history with these type of games? Any particular game I should try out?

I can't get into these at all. I appreciate the concept, ie the freedom that these games allow but they just don't click with me in even the smallest of ways.

I like the rougelike-likes of recent times. Spelunky and FTL are great podcast games.

Is Shiren the Wanderer the same as the pokemon dungeon games? I played one of those pokemon ones once, seemed quite alright.

Rogue Leagacy, a 2D platforming version, is coming out today.  The demo was good, but I don't think it's a 'day 1' purchase.

I like the idea of roguelikes. But they're mostly tedious. Shiren is my favorite one, though.

I like these games, because of the brutal I'll kill you within the first few minutes mentality.

i fucking love shiren and the mystery dungeon series,i played it for countless hour,i've even tried to bruteforce the japanese only one (with fairly decent result actualy... then i sold my super sword to a merchant because i don't understand a lick of japanese :japancry) and i played both of the first two torneko game (which is basicaly shiren but with a dragon quest theme... the first one is fantranslated and the second one has a somewhat lame official translation) i've even played the remake DS version of the gameboy color one (which too has a fantranslation) oh and the wii one (which kill what i liked about the game in the first place :-\)

the thing that seems to scare people the most about shiren is that true, upon your death you lose all your progress but the game is incredibly quickly and it can actualy be finished in less than 30 minutes if you know what you are doing,i've also seen people bruteforce the game by powering up their equipment until you can steamroll the game but no,the game can be done on a single playtrough without grinding as long as you make smart use of the stuff you find

i tried getting into other roguelike but none of them have the same immediacy (i really hate how you need to remember 10 different button for rogue for example) AND variety of situation

oh yeah this thread needs more desktop dungeon (i swear the redone version has been in beta for 2 years)

and more chocobo dungeon

looking at wikipedia it seems not very many of the shiren games have been released outside of japan (surprise!) - is the first DS one worthwhile? it has a PAL release and everything.

err yeah i meant the first one since the one on the DS is a slightly upgraded port of the original, there is only one in english but in japan there is a remake of the gameboy color one (which has a fan-translation which translate only the menu's but it's good enough to go trough the game and is different from the actual shiren 2 which is a N64 game) and sequels in shiren 4 and 5 (4 also has a PSP version)

anyway the one on wii (which would be shiren 3) change in that instead of one big dungeon to go trough you instead traverse several small one, this end up killing the arcadey spirit of the original and make the game more plot centric, worse yet while early dungeon can be strolled around with easiness later dungeon start throwing you high level monster as soon as you enter making progress impossible barring previous preparation!

of course if you die you lose everything so you are often forced to backtrack to a previous dungeon to get supplies which is annoying and boring... to make it even worse, most of the dungeon have a boss at the end,the boss in question is immune to all your trick and can't be paralyzed, sleeped or fucked with thus making finishing the dungeon a matter of bringing enough healing item and having a decent weapon and armor rather than simply trick your way to the end

there is an easy mode which make it so that you don't lose your item upon death and also make you start with several healing items which make the game a lot less aggravating but frankly it seems like a make-shift solution to a problem that shouldn't be there to begin with

the other gimmick is that other than shiren there are 2 other playable character, shiren master and asuka (a character from a previous game) they get their own equipment (in fact the gimmick is that shiren master can't equip shield but has better weapon's and asuka can equip spear which can hit enemies 2 square ahead) and are AI controlled but you can control them manualy if the situation call for it,if they die it count as if you did die instead which adds another grade of aggravation to the game

monster are now color coded and each color of monster has a special ability other than it's own ability, for example all the red monster can score critical hits instead of just the minotaur which is really aggravating and stupid, there is a system where some room have color coded shrine where upon putting a weapon or shield inside the shrine that item gain a bonus and extra stuff related to the color of that monster but it doesn't add much to the game

lastly there aren't a lot of new monster and items added to the game to begin with, shiren is an amazing game because every monster has a trick and a different way to screw you over but in shiren 3 most monster just come to you and punch you in the face and it really kills my enjoyement of the game

i think they realized they fucked up because all of the thing described above are gone in shiren 4 replaced with a day/night system where upon night arrival, monster get crazy strong but you also get magic nuke abilities

:lol

allright here's a short version,it introduce very little new stuff most of which is gimmick and annoying,a lot of the monster from the original are gone, you have to deal with AI partner who make you game over if they die (altough you can take control of them if the situation calls for it) and there is grinding involved where there shouldn't be because of unfuckable bosses and multiple dungeons not present in the original

post a coli emote that communicates your opinion on it after you've played it some. I'd like to know if it's worth the hassle.

Been playing Dweller on android. Seems like a very competent roguelike (I'm not exactly well versed in the genre). It's the only phone game I've put any actual time into, rogue likes make for great time wasters.

if you need any sort of help ask away, just remember the golden rule, use your stuff instead of "keeping it for later"

Toejam and Earl
Azure Dreams
Dragon Crystal (Game Gear/Master System)
Lufia 2's Ancient Cave
Fatal Labyrinth
Nightmare of Druaga

azure dreams is a neat game, other than being a roguelike there are also town building elements and :uguu bits where you hook up with the town girls oh and you also get to play a konami game before they went leg up

Azure Dreams was the first Roguelike I ever played and I kept wondering why enemies stopped when I stopped and why my stats reset when I died.

I didn't actually grasp those vital mechanics for probably 5 hours.
