This Armond White person is a troll, right? Every review I read has him enjoying some movie that's universally hated or hating a movie that's universally loved.

I don't think he's a troll.  Trolls can at least be entertaining, and do their shit for the lulz.

No, I think he's one of those people who are all, "Man I'm such an individual, and I think so much that I have brilliant contrarian viewpoints.  MY CONTRARIAN VIEWPOINTS. LET ME SHARE THEM WITH YOU."

Those people are interesting for like five minutes, until you realize what's going on and then the entire rest of your life any interaction with them is a fucking chore of mammoth proportions.

The movie is perfect summer action movie.

The visuals are amazing and beaming with detail. It's just a mark of good directing when you see all the detail and scale presented in this movie.

But I mean this is what Del Taro is good it. It's just not the visual effects that are great, everything looks good and has character to it.

From the beginning the movie draws you into a pretty well realized and kind of interesting world.

The Russian unit's head gear reminded me of the Scope Dogs from Votoms.

The movie was great.

Just got back from a 10pm screening with six of my buddies.

My God, this movie is dumb. Every time they tried to draw me into the universe with something, they'd throw a terribly delivered line or some stupid comedy thing at you.

But you know what? I don't care about the negatives at all. It was a ton of fun and entertaining as hell. We had a blast passing around cans of beer and MST3K'ing it while having an awesome time watching GIANT ROBOTS FUCK SHIT UP ON THE SCREEN. Loads of references to Top Gun and Independence Day alongside the mecha and giant monster tropes.

And yeah! I also thought the Russian team's helmets looked like Scopedogs from Votoms. Whoever designed must have done that on purpose.

Also, the Striker Eureka is one sexy mecha.

edit: For those who give a shit about box office, my 10pm 2D screening was probably 75% full. 99.99% of those in attendance were male. We actually thought it would be even higher than that.

Charlie Day is by far the worst part of this movie. He is goddamn awful. But overall the movie is pretty awesome.
Nah, he fit perfectly.

I see people getting their hopes up with those numbers but I think everyone assumed it would be frontloaded, especially compared to a film targeted towards families.

Seems to confirm what we've known: nerds don't actually "run" anything. Nerd movies succeed when they attract a large female audience by becoming an "event" film, as in "the movie of the summer/year." And nearly as importantly they succeed due to being based on an established IP with a main role handled by an actor women like.

It's just that you have a history of making posts about like "nerd opinions don't matter" from the xbone to pacific rim, in relation to sales and numerical data. It's pretty annoying, especially since the show we all love to watch - Game of Thrones - is a total nerd show and breaking cable television records.

No idea, but you could put together all the best scenes from the entire Transformers trilogy and it still wouldn't be even half as good as Pacific Rim.

Game Of Thrones is successful because it attracts a large female audience; nearly half of the book readers are female, and about half of the show viewers are female.

Pacific Rim is a sausage fest apparently, and will bomba. I used to be confident about word of mouth, now...  :'(

Robert Downey Jr drove women to see The Avengers though.

I enjoyed the transformers movies too by the way.  Forgettable action.  I'd never purchase it.  But I was entertained for one viewing.  Like Avatar!

You're saying The Avengers didn't do gangbusters with women? Wanna guess how many of those tickets were sold to people who never read a comic and barely watched any superhero cartoons? RDJ, Thor's actor, etc is what drove ticket sales. How many people who saw Transformers gave a shit about the cartoon or toys?

Put it this way: if a film only appeals to Manabyte, me, EB bros, etc...it's probably going to fail.

Eh, I think you're counting your chickens too soon. Especially since it beat Grown Ups last night, but Grown Ups may (should) pick up over the weekend. Still, it's a nice small victory, and the movie will more than likely do great overseas. At which point, this becomes an American's have terrible taste problem and less of a "nerd movie" problem.

It has nothing to do with taste. It's about marketing (how many people are constantly saying "I didn't know about this film until x time ago"), and being a blockbuster summer film without a blockbuster cast, IP, or heart throb.

I think those people just live in the dark. Then again I've been hyped for it for over a year so I'm biased.

Remember: Pacific Rim had a trailer during The Hobbit. That's going back well over 6 months. I think they've done a decent job marketing a giant robot film.

yeah, the guy playing Superman is unknown but he's surrounded by famous people and he's walking around shirtless in the trailers.  He's shirtless in the movie for the same amount of time he's shirtless in the trailers.  Same thing with Thor.

The biggest star of Pacific Rim is "that guy from the wire--no, not omar" and everyone is walking around fully clothed.  There are rules.  The only person shirtless in The Avengers is Mark Ruffalo.  Everyone else went shirtless in their first movies and then they earned the right to keep their shirts on.  Even Spider-Man takes his shirt off and he's all lanky.

Do women really go see a nerd movie in droves just to see a guy without a shirt on? Women tend to look for stories more so than physicality. Though being hot helps, I'm not convinced any women will go to see fucking Superman just because the lead actor is shirtless. I don't see any evidence for it.

....ok, we've hit a brick wall then.

Superhero films are most successful when they attract a wide female audience, and the best way to do that is with a bankable actor who women like. RDJ is super popular among women, Christian Bale is popular among women, etc. The Thor actor (shirtless in the trailer) is super popular among women. They're event films, no one gives a shit about the plot outside of nerds. Does anyone care about Superman outside of nerds? Did anyone care about Thor until the film came out? It had a hot lead actor and a shit ton of action - of course it was a success, unlike Superman Returns.

I don't really buy this "female audience thing". What appeals to females in Avatar or the Transformer's movies? Why did'nt they turn out for John Carter. It was about a dude being shirtless the entire time?

Maybe the movie's subject matter didn't appeal to Americans? Giant Robots fighting giant monsters? That stuffs for kids. Maybe the movie looked too silly.

This is the sad truth on both accounts. Weeaboo anime fans just don't give a shit about mecha. So much so that Sunrise/Bandai Visual was absolutely floored that Gundam bombed here. Hell, they were so pissed off about it that they took their ball and ran home.

I think ignoring the business side is as bad as caring too much about it.  I'm happy and grateful that this movie exists and I'm likely going to pay the obscene ticket price to see it in IMAX, but it'd be tragic if this is poor box office performance scares studios away from similar projects.

This is the sad truth on both accounts. Weeaboo anime fans just don't give a shit about mecha. So much so that Sunrise/Bandai Visual was absolutely floored that Gundam bombed here. Hell, they were so pissed off about it that they took their ball and ran home.

Were they really? Gundam Wing and I think G Gundam seemed popular.  UC Gundam, yeah, I think that's a hard sell for western audiences.

Robotech is a strange case.  Some older people have nostalgia for it, there were a couple western developed Robotech games, and some actor wanted to make a Robotech movie a few years back.  I kinda want to see a live action Robotech movie just to see what happens when it's released in Japan.

Are women the most shallow movie going audience? Thats all this thread is telling me.

Because I really doubt thats the reason they go see summer blockbuster movies.
its a major factor for getting women to see movies outside the normal female target genres.

Going to theatre.

Gundam, does the mecha porn ever get as good as 00:38 - 00:46?

Wtf is all this serious talk shitting up this thread? STACKER PENTECOST. HERCULES HANSEN. GIPSY DANGER.

This times a million. I don't give a shit about box office totals.

Go watch the movie feggits.

I think ignoring the business side is as bad as caring too much about it.  I'm happy and grateful that this movie exists and I'm likely going to pay the obscene ticket price to see it in IMAX, but it'd be tragic if this is poor box office performance scares studios away from similar projects.

Gundam Wing is the exception. They killed Gundam in America by going with 0079 rather than X after Wing. Gundam's popularity dwindled as a result.

That said I agree with your first part of the post. It seems silly to express love for seeing mecha no the silver screen, but not care about sales. Plus, it's the first day (?) and most of us aren't going to see it til tonight. What else is there to talk about?

You mean seeing movies that are big on the nerd factor (and not necessarily shit they watch or ingest*). Biggest audience is women last I time I checked.

Had to add in the * since I didn't clarify. Women love them some nerdy shit, GoT, Harry Potter, Hunger Games.

Headphones.  If I'm ever going to be in line anywhere in life, I take some earbuds with me.  Cause fuck people.
